1ST SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Dear Parishioners
Advent focuses our attention on the
coming of Christ. It means, ‘arrival’ or
‘coming’ and can be in three phases: firstly,
his arrival in Bethlehem, born of Mary and
taking on a human nature life ours; the
second, is the welcoming we give him in our
daily lives – he comes into our minds and
hearts; and thirdly, his glorious coming at
the end of time.
We are advised to stay awake … our
salvation is near at hand … “watch
yourselves, or your hearts will be coarsened
with debauchery and drunkenness”. In other
words, if we lose sight of Jesus in our lives
and if our minds and hearts are not filled
with love of him, then all sorts of silly things
can fill the vacuum. Between now and the
celebration of the birth of Jesus, there are so
many things to be done. For weeks the
media and the stores have been pushing the
commercial side, not to speak of Black
Friday! So easy to be distracted and we can
easily get tired of being bombarded with
stuff.
Let us focus on the truth of Advent;
Jesus coming into our world to bring a
kingdom of peace and joy; a kingdom of
justice love and peace, as we saw in last
Sunday’s feast of Christ the King.
With hope and joy in our hearts, we
progress in the coming days to welcome the
Prince of Peace into our lives. Never before
did we need that peace and tranquillity on
our world more than today. Advent is a
time of hope. We will
soon have John the
Baptist reminding us to
“prepare a way for the
Lord, make his paths
straight”. Each year we
hear the same invitation
and yes, we have made
the journey before. We must set out once
again as if for the very first time. We need
to re-read the road map that leads to Christ;
get rid of some ‘baggage’ that slows us down
and set out again on that spiritual journey
with Christ as our guide and leader.

helped in the Parish Bazaar. It was a lovely
social event including raising £1,000 for
parish funds.

Instead of closing our eyes and bowing
our heads, sometimes God wants us to kkep
our eyes open for people in need, do
something about it, and bow our whole lives
to Him instead. (Bab Goff).
BRUSSELS VISIT: On Tuesday, I go to
Brussels and will be among other speakers
at the 15th International Conference on the
EU, Turkey and the Kurds at the European
Parliament. I will be part of the Imrali
Delegation showing solidarity particularly
on the continued request for the freedom of
Abdullah Ocalan, the ‘Nelson Mandela’ of the
Kurdish people. The struggle goes on!

had received their first Holy Communion in
May 2018 to prepare for the Sacrament of

JOCELYN LUXON, RIP
We pray for the repose of the soul of
Jocelyn Luxon, RIP a former parishioner who
died recently. Her Requiem Mass will be held
on Wednesday 12th December at 10.30am
in the Chapel at St Anne's Home, 77 Manor
Road, Stoke Newington, N16 5BL.
We remember her and her family in our
prayers. May she rest in peace.
MADELEINE HOLMES, RIP
We pray for the repose of the soul of
Madeleine Holmes, RIP a former parishioner
who died on Saturday 24th November. Her
Requiem Mass will be held on Monday 10th
December here in St John Vianney. Madeleine
had been very involved in parish life here at
St John Vianney as part of our counting team.
We remember her and her family in our
prayers. May she rest in peace.

INSIGHT II: WOMEN & MEN OF THE BIBLE
This course offers an insight into the lives of
various women and men in the Bible,
specifically from the Old Testament.

We will be using the center gates as entrance and
exit. On exiting the center gate gives a better view of
traffic and also you can be seen by the oncoming
traffic. The gates you normally use will be closed.

HOMELESS DURING ADVENT:
Each year we have a basket/container in the
church for donations and presents for the
HOMELESS – e.g.: socks, gloves, hats/caps,
scarves, toiletries (toothpaste, soap,
disposable razors) etc. Bigger items such as
CLEAN blankets, towels, men’s clothing will
be greatly appreciated and these can be
handed in to the presbytery during office
hours before Friday 14th December.

PARISH PILGRIMAGE TO SANTIAGO
If you would like to join us to go to Santiago
de Compo stela for a 7 days walking
pilgrimage at the end of May 2019, we need to
