Topic 6: Buoyancy

Buoyancy:

The tendency for materials to RISE or FLOAT in a fluid.

Buoyant Force:

 The UPWARD force exerted on objects when submerged in fluids

 The ability of a fluid to support and object floating in or on the fluid

What does it mean to float?

 When an object does not fall in air or sink in water, but remains suspended

Average Density:
 When the total mass of the object is divided by the larger volume

 By LOWERING the average density, the object is able to float

 Increasing average density would cause an object to SINK
