Instructional Resources:
Schools of the Past, Present, and Future by Linda Bozzo
Ven-diagram template from Teacher’s Pay Teachers
Consideration of Learners:
How have you responded to your diverse learners? Consider UDL (Multiple means of Engagement, Representation,
Action & Expression) & principles of differentiation. If appropriate, identify individual accommodations you will make
in response to needs or interests of students.

I have responded to my diverse learners. We will start with reading a book about school life in the past and present. We
will also look at pictures of school life in the past. Finally, we will write down differences and similaries on a ven-diagram
in order to help all of the students understand that life has changed.

DOMAIN 2: THE CLASSROOM ENVIRONMENT

COVENANT MANAGEMENT: Relationship & community building questioning, positivity

CONDUCT MANAGEMENT: (Behavioral expectations, strategies to encourage self- regulation, etc.)

Identify at least 2 ways you will gain whole group attention: clapping, counting, “knock knock”
Strategies you intend to use to redirect individual students: saying name, taking chips, sending back

CONTENT MANAGEMENT: writing at their desks

PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: part of the lesson at circle and part of the lesson at desks

DOMAIN 3: INSTRUCTION
CONTENT MANAGEMENT: YOUR INSTRUCTION
Motivation/Opening/Intro: ( 7 minutes)
- Start singing “criss cross”
- Did anyone go home and ask parents/grandparents about what life was like for them?
- Students share
- Does anyone remember about what the book talked about the school? – it was schoolhouse and it was also a
church
- That’s right! Now we are going to read about schools in the past and present
- Read the book to the students then ask them to go and gather in front of the screen
Development: (40 minutes)
- Once the students are at the screen then pull of pictures from one room schoolhouses
- Say that these are some pictures of schools in the past
- Instead of a whole big school with different rooms for different grades all of the students were taught in one
room
- There was one teacher for all of the kids! But remember the book said that not all kids went to school
- Some kids had to work or help out at home
- Remember the book we read yesterday and how the kid had to help at home
- Can you quietly go to your desks?
- Pass out the ven-diagrams
- Put the ven-diagram on the overhead
- Say that we are going to make a ven-diagram of school life
- Does anyone remember what a ven-diagram is? – circles with things that happen on both sides and what
happen in both in the middle
- Good job! So lets label the left the past and the right the present
- What are some things from the books, the pictures, or what you already know about the past or present?
- Fill out the ven-diagram with the students
- Remind students about what happens in both the past and present
- After students are done they can put them in the in-bin and sit at their desks with their hands folded
- Now we are going to review a little bit
- What is a month? A week? A date?
- What is a family tree?
- A timeline?
- Past, present, and future?
- I will pass back a test for you to take
- Remember this test helps me know if I taught well or not!
- You may grab clipboards and flop
- I will red the questions for you and go!
- Read the questions on the overhead
- Walk around and help as needed

Closure: (3 minutes)
- Students can put their tests in the in bin
- Then put their clipboards away
- Finally, students should sit at their desks with their hands folded and get ready for the next activity!
