Reflection: Physical Therapy

Last February 12, 2018, we had our Immersion Class at the Physical Therapy
Department. It was our first immersion class held in areas of medical field. I thought we
were doing on-hand experiences on modals that are introduced but instead we were the
one being examined on what the modals can do. We had three facilitators and they were
very convincing and welcoming. They were open for questions and they even shared
some of their experiences as a Physical Therapist. I was in Group B and our experience
together were fun. I was very interested on Physical Therapy that time because of how
great the job is and its benefits. It was shocking when one of our facilitator said that
Physical Therapy is very easy but she said that it just needs hard work and discipline in
studying and pursuing this course. I was able to know some assistive devices like
walkers, crutches/crunch for the patients with fractures depending on age which
strengthen the upper bodies and sitting pushups in gym, elastic bandages which is color-
coded for its resistance, tubes for finger exercises, balance for strengthening their balance,
cones to provide obstacles, vesicular balls, wheelchair, ankle weights, reaching blocks for
dexterity exercise, belts, tuning fork for assessing vibration and sound, canes for weaker
balance, and etc. I learned that being a physical therapist is not easy during the course of
learning because you have to take up many fields in sciences. They also handle clients
and patients in hospital, home care, and gyms.

Reflection: Nursing

Last February 26, 2018, we had our Immersion class in the WBT 2nd Floor. We were
discussing the history of nursing, the achievements, rewards, and services offered here in
Silliman University. I learned that taking up Nursing course is no joke and being a nurse is
not a joke. Nursing student experiences pressure during the field work. Nursing in Silliman
University was awarded with plaques of recognition, accredited by PAASCU, and was chosen
by John Hopkins International Education for Reproductive Health & ADPCN as the training
center for Reproductive Health in Region VII. SUCN also became the pilot college in the
offering of MODCAL to cater the needs of Sillimanians and other students from various
schools. Knowing this knowledge alone is a privilege to pursue Nursing in Silliman. A person
initiates and performs the nursing services to individuals, families, and communities in any
health care settings which includes conception, labor, delivery, infancy, childhood, toddler,
pre-school, school age, adolescence, adulthood, and old age. This is the scope of nursing and
I also learned that nursing is a good pre-med course when we enter medicine because we get
to experience social works and interaction with patients. We also went to the Nursing
Laboratory and Resource Center where we can see machines and robot simulator where
assessments are held.

To whom it may concern,

Please excuse my absences during our group meeting on these dates, February 9,
2018 (Friday), February 19, 2018 (Monday), and February 26, 2018 (Monday). Last
February 9, 2018, I was not able to join the group meeting because we were setting up our
tents for the preparation of camping beside the gym since our classmate needs help during
that time. Last February 19, 2018, we had our Immersion Class in EC which is by group
designated in our Immersion Class and last February 26, 2018, we had a meeting regarding
our Physics with my group for the planning and creation of our project.

Hoping for your kind consideration.

Your student,

Leonard Cyren O. Ligutom

Reflection: Medical Technology

Last February 19, 2018, we had our class immersion in Ethel Chapman facilitated
by groups with respective medical technologists. At first, I was excited to learn more
about medical technology because I got interested on physical therapy. Our teacher began
the discussion with a question regarding our understanding and knowledge of medical
technology. I felt nervous but excited when she mentioned about taking blood test with
a volunteer in the class. I hesitated to volunteer but my groupmates were eager to take
the blood typing. We were able to see how it is done and how medical technologists deal
with patients. I think that being a medical technologist is no joke. It needs basic
knowledge and skills with good decision making and attitude. I think being a medical
technologist won't fit me because I am careless in dealing with glasses. I believe medical
technologist is also a good pre-med course and maybe through time, I will be able to
handle and improve if I go for med tech. During our class, our teacher brought us into
rooms with modalities where classes are held using the machines that is related to the
course. We were able to see tools and learn the function of it especially how it costs. I
learned that we need skills and dedication if we want to be a med tech. The course is very
interesting because I saw many things that are very challenging and exciting to learn and
use.
