2.3 Instructions for field measurement

2.3 Instructions for field measurement

When installing the device together with the switch box “FSW-10” for long-term measurement on the
fixed location, be sure to ground correctly. Also, if there is a risk of lightning stroke, be sure to ground
correctly.

❏ Grounding

Connect the earth wire to the GND

terminal. Use a thick earth wire as much
as possible and ground with the shortest
length. Grounding is effective for noise
from lightning or heavy equipments.

If peal of thunder is near, or there is a risk of lightning stroke, stop the wiring works for
Danger grounding or power source, and operation of the measurement device and depart from
the machines. If being hit by a stroke of lightning during these works, you may get an
electric shock, get burned, or even die.

❏ Lightning protection
In fields where cables between a switch box and a sensor are extended, pulse generated by powerful
induction of lightning stroke may cause serious damage on sensor, switch boxes, and measurement devices
and even break them even if they are not hit by lightning stroke directly. Therefore, proper countermeasures
against lightning are essential.

○Cable layout
For sensor cables, use rubber coated or shield coated cables for converters. In order to minimize
differences of induction voltages against the ground, avoid air wiring, and lay wires down on the
ground. If it is impossible to lay them down on the ground (for example if cables are installed around
steel towers), use the arrester for sensors mentioned in the next article.

○Arrester for sensor

NZ-6B is the 6-wire system arrester for sensor and also applied to strain gauges.
Insert the arrester near the sensor as much as possible.

4.3 Initial value processing

4.3 Initial value processing

“Initial-in” is the function to save current measurement values in the device. It is used to take the
initial unbalanced value (initial value) of the strain gauge or the strain gauge converter from
measurement values, and to display proper values. The initial unbalanced value means a signal
generated by slight misalignment of gauge resistor values, which arises even when no external force
is applied. In case of displacement gauges or other similar gauges, they execute initial-in at the
basic point when they measure variation based on the installation point. As a result, they can
acquire relative variation from the basic point.
There are two indication types available for displaying measurement values: “Measure value”,
the value from which the initial value is excluded ([M] or [m] is attached to data on the monitor
display); and “Direct value”, the value in which the initial value is included ([D] is attached to data
on the monitor display). Similar to strain measurement, displaying values that do not include the
initial value is allowed for voltage measurement. However, thermocouples and platinum resistance
thermometers, which are used for measuring temperature, cannot display values that do not include
the initial value.

❏ Initial-in
This function takes the initial value for a scanning channel currently being measured.

selecting “**” in the Date, Hours, Minutes, or Seconds column, you can set a given date and time.
You cannot enter values in the upper columns than the column you entered “**” (for example, when
you enter “**” in the Minutes column, you cannot enter values in the Date and Hours columns).

①Go to “Interval measurement”. Move the

cursor (reversed indication) with the
【▲】【▼】 keys on the step to be set and
press the 【ENT】 key.
②Move the cursor (reversed indication) to
“Real time” with the 【▲】【▼】 keys and

[Example to Perform Repeated Measurement at 00 minute

and 00 second, Every Hour]
Make setting of [Jump to Step Number 01] at Step 02 and
set the number of times to infinity. The measurement will
be done at every 00 minute, 00 second repeatedly with
this setting. It is also possible to set a number to the
number of repetition portion.
Note The repetitive measurement is not
performed if you perform GOTO Step
Setting. Please refer to [15 ~ 19 Page,
Setting of GOTO Step] for GOTO Step
Setting.

Note For real-time start, when you set “**” in Date, and a specified time, pay
attention to timing to start measurement.

Example) Measurement at AM0:00, AM6:00, and PM12:00

Step Content Number of cycles
01 Measure at AM0:00, date **
02 Measure at AM6:00, date **
03 Measure at PM12:00, date **
04 Go to Step 01

In this case, measurement is executed at AM0:00, AM6:00, and PM12:00.

Measurement at AM0:00 for Step 01 is executed first, and then, measurement for
Step 02 at AM6:00, and Step 03 at PM12:00 are performed sequentially in order of
the steps. In other words, even if auto measurement starts according to the real time
start function before AM6:00 or PM12:00, measurement operations at AM6:00 and at
PM12:00 are not executed unless Step 01 is executed.

Note When the date 29 th , 30 th , and 31 st of month is set for real-time start, the device
does not execute scanning measurement in a month which has no
corresponding date.

❏ Goto Step
Goto Step is the function to move to a specified step. You can use this function to repeat interval
measurement. With this function, the device executes interval measurement for Step 01 to Step 03
and then, executes similar steps again.

❏ What is monitor comparator?

A monitor comparator monitors (measures using a monitor) a specific channel (a channel being set
to Monitor 0) and performs scanning measurement when a measured value has changed for a certain
amount (relative value setting) or when the value has exceeded a threshold (upper and lower limit
settings). A single step consists of an amount of relative change and the number of repetitions for
the relative value setting, and upper and lower limits and the number of repetitions for the upper
and lower limit settings.

An example of 3-step monitor comparator is given below. The steps are sequentially executed in
order of Step 01, Step 02 and Step 03. You can set up to 10 steps.

❏ Setting the monitor comparator

The monitor comparator monitors a specific channel (monitor measurement) and performs the
scanning measurement whenever the value changes for a certain amount or when a monitor value
exceeds the set lower limit. You need to set an amount of relative change, upper and lower limits
and the number of repetitions.

The following is an example that the scanning measurement is performed when an amount of
change exceeds 1000 in the relative value measurement. This condition is further applied until the
measurement is completed twice.

❏ What is an Alarm Output?

The Alarm Output is the function to monitor an assigned channel and to close the assigned
contact points when measured value varied for given quantity or exceeds a threshold value (set for
upper/lower limits).
The monitoring transfers contact points by comparing during monitoring or scanning execution.
There are four (4) contact points to output, and are able to set contact points for comparison channel,
comparing condition and output ends. It is also possible to make contact points to be ON when
either one of contact points was set among multiple channels.
Actuation becomes possible when connecting TDS-150 dedicated Alarm Unit, ALM-150
(optional).

Description regarding monitoring on Monitored Value and Scanned Value will be made with

9.1 Wire connection of strain gauge

9.1 Wire connection of strain gauge

This section explains how to connect wires of strain gauge that can be measured. The next
section shows decreasing rate of sensitivity due to extension of strain gauge.

❏ Quarter bridge 4-wire system

Four lead wires are used to eliminate necessity of gauge rate compensation due to lead wire
resistance, and measurement errors caused by contact resistance. This new strain measurement
method allows elimination of initial unbalance caused by lead wires and compensation of lead wire
temperature.
For the quarter bridge 3-wire method, thickest and shortest electric wires as far as possible are
recommended. However, with the quarter bridge 4-wire method, thin lead wires and connectors can
be used for connection or extension. As a result, it allows more efficient wiring works, prevents
wiring errors, and reduces costs for strain measurement by re-use of lead wires.

❏ Quarter bridge 2-wire method (1 gauge)

An internal fixed resistance is used for configuring a bridge circuit around bridge sides except an
active gauge (gauge detecting strain).
Lead wire resistance to a strain gauge enters serially only in the active gauge. If a thin wire or
long lead wire is used, initial unbalance cannot be eliminated or resistance variation due to
temperature change comes into measurement values directly as an apparent strain in some cases.
Also, temperature compensation for the strain gauge is not possible. For more accurate
measurement, we recommend the quarter bridge 3-wire method.
If shorting the terminal block B and C, you can use the 1G3W sensor mode for measurement;
however, the device does not support this way formally.

Note Auto compensation of lead wire is not available even if you perform
measurement with CometB. Similar to Comet A, measurement value must be
compensated. For more detail, refer to “Compensation by quarter bridge
method”.

❏ Quarter bridge 3-wire method (1 gauge)

Three parallel lines are used for connection to compensate affection of lead wire by the quarter
bridge 2-wire method. Since resistance of the lead wire enters also in the fixed resistance side of the
bridge sides, affection of initial unbalance caused by the lead wire is eliminated and temperature
compensation for the lead wire is also possible. However, temperature compensation for the strain
gauge is not possible.

❏ Half bridge method (2-gauge)

An internal fixed resistance is used for two sides of bridge circuit. A strain gauge of the same lot
is used and three parallel lines are used for connection. Temperature compensation for the strain
gauge and for the lead wire is possible at the same time, and affection of initial unbalance caused by
the lead wire is eliminated.

❏ Full bridge method (4-gauge)

Without using an internal fixed resistance, a strain gauge configures all 4 sides of the bridge.
This method is used for measurement of converter, torque, and bending, which need large output,
but not often used for general stress measurement works. When the bridge is configured at the area
where the strain gauge is attached, initial unbalance and affection of temperature can be eliminated
even when the lead wire is extended.

9-2
9.2 Sensitivity deterioration due to sensor cable extension

9.2 Sensitivity deterioration due to sensor cable extension

❏ Measurement by constant voltage method
Generally, the constant voltage method, with constant bridge impressed voltage is used for
measuring strain. When a sensor cable between a switch box and a strain gauge converter is
extended, this method causes deterioration of sensitivity because the voltage decreases by the cable
resistance and depresses the impressed voltage to the converter.

The illustration below shows an equivalent circuit in a case where the 4GAGE method is used for
extending a sensor cable.

Rg : Bridge input resistance

Rg r : Cable resistance
E
E : Bridge impressed voltage
I : Bridge impressed current
e : Bridge output voltage
C

B e
D *A, B, C, and D: Switch box terminals

In case of the quarter bridge 2-wire method, half bridge common dummy method, and full bridge
method, a true value excluding sensitivity deterioration caused by lead wires is calculated by the
following formula:

Rg+2r
True value = Measurement value×
Rg
In case of the quarter bridge 3-wire method, and half bridge (3-wire) method, lead wire resistance
entered in one side is on the mate side, and a true value is calculated by the following formula:

True value = Measurement value× Rg+r

Rg
In case of the quarter bridge 3-wire method, when Comet B is set for the compensation method,
this device measures lead wire resistance and you can acquire correct measurement values
compensated properly.

When Comet A or B is set, the device activates compensation including initial values. Therefore,
the compensation calculation formulas above are not appropriate. For more detail, refer to the page
7 of Chapter 10, “Compensation by quarter bridge 3-wire method”.

9-3
9.2 Sensitivity deterioration due to sensor cable extension

Reference) Resistance value of each cable and sensitivity deterioration at constant

voltage

The table below shows resistance values of popular sensor extension cables.

Cable direct current resistence value (25℃)

Sectional Wire diameter (mm) × Both-way resistance value
area(mm 2) number of wires per 10m (Ω)
0.08 0.12× 7 4.4
0.14 0.12×12 2.46
0.23 0.12×20 1.6
0.3 0.18×12 1.19
0.34 0.12×30 1.06
0.5 0.18×20 0.71
0.75 0.18×30 0.48

Rg 350
= = 0.831353.... 0.83
Rg+2r 350+71

The calculation result shows approximately 17% sensitivity deterioration. In case of longer
extension and wilder temperature change, you must consider variation of resistance values due to
copper’s temperature coefficient (+0.004/℃).

9-4
9.2 Sensitivity deterioration due to sensor cable extension

❏ Measurement by constant current method

Since constant impressed current is maintained under the constant current method, voltage impressed to
a converter is always constant even when the cable resistance changes. Therefore, deterioration of
sensitivity can be ignored.

The bridge output voltage “e” under the constant voltage method is calculated as:
E Rg )
e= ・k・ε・(
4 Rg+2r
Compared with the case where the cable is not extended (r=0), × ( Rg ) output is deteriorated.
Rg+2r
When the current I is constant under the constant current method,
I・Rg
e= ・k・ε
4
and the resistance “r” of the extension cable does not affect on the calculation result. However, in actual
cases of sensor cable extension, capacitance (C), inductance (L) or other elements are added on the
resistance (R) element, therefore, a pulse impression type data logger like this device generates a slight
deterioration of sensitivity even under the constant current method. Also, as voltage at the input terminal
changes in proportion with the bridge input resistance “Rg”, it is necessary to compensate by input
resistance values of the converter to be used, when more appropriate.

Characteristic of each method (excl. C and L affection)

Method Sensitivity deterioration by Affection of converter input resistance

C o n s ta n t Compensate if required. (Nominal input resistance 350Ω)
current Can be ignored True value=Measurement value×
Actual input resistance
method

The sensor mode of the constant current system on this device is “4GAGE C350Ω”. All other strain
measurement sensor modes are the constant voltage method. The sensor mode of the constant current
system is calibrated so that the device provides correct sensitivity when a full bridge converter with 350Ω of
nominal input resistance is connected. When a converter with 350Ω or less is connected, rather low
measurement values are displayed, and when a converter with 350Ω or more is connected, rather high
measurement values are displayed.
Also, when input resistance including the extended cable becomes 750Ω (standard resolution mode) or more,
the bridge power is saturated and further measurement is impossible (approximately 5.6Km by a cable with
the sectional area 0.5mm 2 ).

If input resistance of the converter is largely out of 350Ω, compensate the resistance with the following
formula:
Nominal Input resistance
True value = Measurement value×
Actual input resistance

Example) Converter with input resistance 355Ω

350
True value=measurement value× ≒Measurement value×0.986
355
So, the coefficient “0.986” is set for the measurement device side.

Our sensor products normally have “Attached input/output code list”, and functions described in the test
result sheet such as “Input resistance” and “Sensitivity” are the values of the input/output code ends.

9.3 Complete Compensation Method of Strain (Comet)

9.3 Complete Compensation Method of Strain (Comet)

Comet:Complete Compensation Method of Strain

❏ Compensation by quarter bridge 3-wire method

When a strain gauge is used for measuring strain, usually a Wheatstone bridge of which bridge
construction side includes the strain gauge is configured for measurement of its resistance variation.

If the AB side of the bridge is the active gauge as shown in the illustration above, the output
voltage “e” is not completely proportional to the strain “ε”. This device provides three types of
operation to compensate errors automatically (refer to the page 25 of Chapter 5, “Comet setting” for
selection procedure). The device activates the compensation operations only when the sensor mode
setting is quarter bridge 3-wire method.
The specification of bridge power source voltage of TC-32K is 1V. However, to make TC-32K
compatible with calibrators and other measurement devices, its bridge output voltage is
compensated.

Note The data header of channel of ISW-50C for which Comet A is available is [m].

9-7
9.3 Complete Compensation Method of Strain (Comet)

❏ Comet NON
The following compensation operation is performed with the conventional compensation method:
2 e
ε= ----- ・ -------------------
K ein
―――― -e
2
The gauge rate K=2.00 is used for the compensation operation.
At the time of direct measurement, the strain value “ε D” from which the initial unbalance value is
not subtracted is calculated by the operation with the header [D]:
At the time of Measure measurement, the strain value “ε M ” from which the initial unbalance
value is subtracted is calculated by the following operation with the header [M]:

❏ Comet A
This compensation method is to compensate non-linear error cased by initial unbalance of bridge,
and effective when the initial unbalance value is large. The bridge output voltage “e 0 ” due to
initial unbalance is measured at the time of initial-in and recorded internally. The bridge output
voltage “e” under the strain occurrence state at the time of measurement is measured and the
following compensation operation is performed:

ein e-e 0
ε=------- ・ ------------------------------------------------
K ein ein
( ------- -e)・( -------- +e 0)
2 2

The gauge rate K=2.00 is used for the compensation operation.

At the time of measurement, the strain value “ε m ” from which the initial unbalance value is
subtracted is calculated by the operation with the header [m]:
When the Comet A operation is performed, the compensation operation including the initial
unbalance values recorded at the time of initial-in from the formula above is activated, so only the
Measure measurement is available. Before measurement, execute initial-in under the initial
unbalance state for starting measurement.

❏ Comet B (quarter bridge 3-wire method only)

At the same time with the Comet A compensation method, this method is used to compensate
deterioration of sensitivity caused by lead wire. The device measures and stores internally the
bridge output voltage “e 0 ” under the initial unbalance, and the both-end voltage of lead wire
resistance “e r ” at the time of initial-in. The bridge output voltage “e ” under the strain
occurrence state at the time of measurement is measured and the following compensation operation
is performed:

ein e-e 0
ε= -------- ・ ------------------------------------------------
K ein ein
( ------ -e )・ (------- +e 0 -e r )
2 2

The gauge rate K=2.00 is used for the compensation operation.

At the time of measurement, the strain value “ε m ” from which the initial unbalance value is
subtracted is calculated by the operation with the header [m]:
When the Comet B operation is performed, the compensation operation including the initial
unbalance values and both-end voltage of lead wire resistance recorded at the time of initial-in from
the formula is activated, so only the Measure measurement is available. Before measurement,
execute initial-in under the initial unbalance state for starting measurement.

9-8
9.4 Lead wire resistance

9.4 Lead wire resistance

When using the quarter bridge 3-wire method, you can calculate a lead wire resistance value at
the time of initial-in and a current lead wire resistance, based on the lead wire resistance data list
and the lead wire resistance check values with the following formula:

Based on data “e r0 ”in the lead wire resistance data list and data “e0 ” in the initial list, the lead
wire resistance value “r 0 ” at the time of initial-in can be calculated with the following formula:
r 0 :Lead wire resistance value at the time of initial-in (Ω)

e r0 :Lead wire resistance voltage at the time of initial-in (μV)

e 0 :Bridge output voltage at the time of initial-in (μV)
Rg : Bridge resistance “Resistance value of dummy resistance 120Ω, 240Ω, and 350Ω ”
e r0
r0 = ×Rg
1+e 0-er0

Based on data “e” of direct check and data “e r ” of lead wire resistance check, a current lead wire
resistance value “r” can be calculated with the following formula:

r : Lead wire resistance value (Ω)

er : Both-end voltage of lead wire resistance at the time of lead wire resistance check (μV)
e :Bridge output voltage at the time of direct check (μV)
Rg : Bridge resistance “Resistance value of dummy resistance 120Ω, 240Ω, and 350Ω ”

er
r = ×Rg
1+e-er

In the compensation calculation of Comet B, the lead wire resistance at the time of initial-in is
recorded and compensated. When you want to calculate strain “ε” based on he current lead wire
resistance, use the following formula:

e r0 :Both-end voltage of lead wire resistance at the time of initial-in, Data in lead wire
resistance data list(μV)
e 0 :Bridge output voltage, list, initial data (μV)
e r :Lead wire resistance voltage at the time of checking lead wire (μV)
e :Bridge output voltage at the time of checking direct (μV)

e・(1-er0 )-e 0 ・(1-er )

ε =
(1+e 0 -er0 )・(1-e-e r )

○To use Comet A and B for measurement, you must perform initial-in to
NOTE measure e 0 (initial unbalance value) and e r (both-end voltage of lead
wire resistance) as shown in the compensation operations. The initial
value and lead wire resistance value (Comet B) are measured in the
initial-in process (without e 0 and e r , which are not measured in the
initial-in process, no correct measurement is enabled).
○ Since the measurement process under the Comet A and B setting
includes the compensation operation, a channel of which sensor
mode is the quarter bridge 3-wire method is automatically set as the
measure mode.
○ Corrective operation following to the setting is performed at 1 gauge
dedicated Network Module (NSW-011, NSW-011B and NSW-011C) but
function to measure lead-wire resistive voltage is not available. The
measured value at Comet-B Setting is calculated as e r = 0.
○ The function to measure lead-wire resistive voltage is not available
for FSW-21C/FSW-21R.
○ The measured value at Comet-B Setting is calculated as e r = 0.

9.5 Compensation method by quarter bridge 4-wire method

9.5 Compensation method by quarter bridge 4-wire method

○Measurement logic
Under the quarter bridge 4-wire system of strain measurement method, no Wheatstone bridge
circuit is used but a simple series circuit is configured with gauge resistance (R) and base resistance
(Rs) to measure strain. Strain can be calculated based on the voltage (V) generated in gauge
resistance and the voltage (Vs) generated in base resistance.
Since a path where current is passing is different from a path for voltage measurement,
measurement without affection of lead wire resistance or contact resistance (r) is possible.

R : Gauge resistance
Rs : Base resistance
r1 r 1 ~r 4:Lead wire resistance
R
i :Current passing gauge resistance
r2
V
r3 and base resistance
E :Voltage source
r4 E
V : Voltage generated in gauge
i resistance
Vs VS : Voltage generated in base
Rs
resistance
K :Gauge rate
○Compensation operation
Under the quarter bridge 4-wire system of strain measurement method, when initial unbalance
gets larger, the output voltage “e” generated for (V) mentioned above is not completely
proportional to the strain “ε”. This device prepares an operation to compensate errors
automatically.
At the time of initial-in, measure the output voltage “e 0 ” generated at the time of initial
unbalance for (V) mentioned above, and save that value in the internal memory of the device. At
the time of measurement, measure the output voltage “e” under the strain occurrence condition
and perform the following compensation operation:

e-e 0
ε m = ------------------
1+2・e 0

○Compensation operation setting

In conjunction with the operation setting described in “Compensation by quarter bridge
method” in the previous article, you can select “Activate compensation operation” or “Not
activate compensation operation”.

Comet NON Not When “Not activate” is selected, output voltage
