Lesson Plan Guide

Teacher Candidate: Sarah Orr Date: 12/2/18

Grade and Topic: 3rd Grade- Science Length of Lesson: _30 Minutes_

Mentor Teacher: School: University of Memphis

UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:

● Using charts, students will have the knowledge to identify the different life cycles of a butterfly,
mealworm, flog, and a plant with 85% accuracy.
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Students will use a matching, cut and paste activity to place the butterfly into its correct life cycle
positions with 100% accuracy.
● Students will have the opportunity to use their technology devices within this lesson. They will be expected to
behave responsibly while using them.
● Students are expected to work effectively and keep their hands to themselves at all times.
● The goal for this lesson is for students to have a tighter grasp on the butterfly’s entire life cycle from beginning to
end.
● “ I CAN” Statement- I can label the 5 different life cycle stages of a butterfly.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:
TN Standard
 GLE 0307.4.1 Identify the different life stages through which plants and animals pass.
 GLE 0307.Inq.3 Organize data into appropriate and explanations. tables, graphs, drawings, or diagrams.
 90307.4.3 Differentiate among the stages in the life cycle of a butterfly, mealworm, frog, and plant.

MATERIALS:
 Pencil
 Paper
 Crayons
 Computer/Ipad

BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:

o Students are learning where the life cycle of a butterfly starts and where it ends.
o Students will be learning this information alongside become for technologically advanced. They will be doing an
interactive activity that helps review over what we have learned in the lesson. They will also have an opportunity to
review again with the interactive activities provided butterfly life cycle video.
o Vocabulary: life cycle, caterpillar, eggs, metamorphosis, chrysalis, science, nature.
o This lesson builds onto the previous lessons by adding onto the life cycle they have learned at this point. By the time
they are learning about the butterfly life cycle, they will have already been taught about the life cycle of a mealworm.
o After they have grasped the butterfly’s life cycle, we will move on to the life cycle of the frog, and later
move onto the life cycle of the plant.
o Some of this lesson will need to be altered depending on the special accommodations that are required by law for
students with 504 plans and IEP’s. Some worksheets may need to be enlarged, preferred seating during lectures or
quiet activity times, extended times for activities, etc.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:

● Introduction: Start off with a questionnaire intro: “Can anybody tell me some characteristics about a
butterfly” “Does anybody like butterflies?” “How do you think butterflies look when they are babies?”
○ “I CAN” Statement- I can label the 4 different life cycles of a butterfly.
○ Altogether: 5 minutes
● Procedures: Provide a sequential (step by step) description of the procedures and activities for the
lesson.
● Teacher will begin after the intro by writing the 5 life cycles of a butterfly on the board. She will then ask
the class what a life cycle is and if they can help her to explain it. (2 Minutes)
● After the class has help the teacher come up with the best definition of “life cycle,” they will move onto
explaining what each phase is. (10 Minutes)
● The teacher will then open her laptop to reveal a loaded Brain Pop Jr. video for the class to watch and
listen. (5 Minutes)
● Formative Assessment: Teacher will ask students to get out a piece of paper to take a quick review quiz
over what they have learned so far. Students will follow the Moby (Brain Pop character) led quiz. This will give
the teacher a good indication on where her students are at the moment. (7 Minutes)\
● Formative Assessment: Sheppards Software video and game on butterfly life cycles. Students will be ask
to type in the following website and complete the butterfly life cycle game. (5 Minutes) Site:
http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/scienceforkids/life_cycle/butterfly_lifecycle.htm
● If students are struggling to complete the game properly, they will be directed by the teacher to watch a
provided life cycle explanation video on the same website. (4 Minutes)
● Summative Assessment: Students will complete and cute and paste activity that matched the 4 cycles of
the butterfly’s life cycles to the right position. Students will be asked to color their assignment if they time left
before everyone is finished. (10 minutes)
● Closure:
● I plan on closing this lesson by asking the class what they learned today about the butterfly life cycle.
Then, I want them to have an open discussion where they discuss with their shoulder partners about what they
found interesting about our lesson that day. They will have about 2 minutes to share their thoughts.
● We will finish up the lesson by repeating our “I Can” Statement”-I can label the 4 different life cycles of a
butterfly.

MODIFICATIONS:
● Some of the modifications made for some students would be preferred seating, enlarged print, extra
time, and different assessment choice.
● For students that reaching a higher level, the teacher could implement some activities that could keep them better
entertained and on task.
