Essential Question: How can we improve tires to prevent vehicle breakdowns?

Working Thesis: Vehicles breakdown all the time, but there are ways to improve tires on

vehicles to prevent or reduce vehicle breakdowns. Decreasing rolling resistance, increasing

durability, checking tire pressure and other factors can lead to less accidents on the road.

Refined Thesis: Vehicles breakdown quite often, and ways to prevent or reduce this is by

decreasing rolling resistance or increasing durability. But, the most important factor to take into

consideration that is often overlooked is tire pressure. These points can help lead to less

incidents along the road.

Optimizing tires to not only be efficient but also fuel efficient is the main goal of multiple

tire companies, which include Michelin, Bridgestone Firestone, Continental Tire, and Hankook.

These tires are mainly meant for delivery trucks, however they plan to bring them to the public

as well, eventually. The main goal of these tire companies is to have safer and more efficient

cars and trucks driving on the road. The importance of this particular article is the mention of

new and innovated tires from multiple different tire companies, and their ultimate and united

goal to create new tires that are not only more durable, but have better mileage, retreadability,

traction, and fuel-efficiency.

Tires pressure should be monitored, and shouldn’t be simplified by saying an average tire

should have 100 PSI, PSI needs to be based on the type of tire and what load it will be carrying.

Since many people often simplify tire pressure and think it should be a steady 100 for every time,

many tires are often under-inflated or over-inflated. This article will be helpful for my research

because it touches on the average tire pressure myth and how this can have an effect on the tires.

It also mentions maintaining tires in both cold and hot weather, as well as keeping tires properly

aligned to extend tread life.

The biggest challenge of managing and maintaining tires is the tire pressure.

Underinflation is the biggest threat to a tires life. However, overinflation can be just as much of

a problem. Checking the PSI to make sure you don’t put in too much or too little can very

extremely beneficial. Even a slight difference, both under and over the recommended amount

can be catastrophic for the tire. The article brings up tire pressure, and I’ve covered tire pressure

quite a lot already. However, the article does also have statistics and goes in depth often with the

information, and this will help with my research.
