Pastor’s Corner
Greetings from your Staff Parish Relations Team, which is the human resources team of our church. As a
transforming church, we have found a need to expand our communications ability in multiple ways
(traditional advertising, social media, etc.) in the local community and beyond. We are blessed to already
have on staff an individual who has the passion and training to fill this need. SPR believes that Bethany
Mills will successfully provide staff leadership to the Communications Team. Bethany’s experiences as a staff member for
the past year make her an ideal individual to assist us in sharing our Mission and Vision to our congregation, the local
community and the world. This new leadership role will require an adjustment to Bethany’s numerous “hats”. It also
allows us the opportunity to find a dedicated Congregational Care staff person.

To meet the many facets of this vital role, we are desiring to dedicate a staff person to lead our Congregational Care
ministry and our newly formed Congregational Care Team. We are beginning the interview process for possible
candidates, hopefully from our Congregation, who are passionate about meeting the varied needs of this important
ministry of our church.

In addressing the funding for this position, SPR has been realigning the responsibilities of several persons to allow us to
fund this position without actually having to add additional burden to our budget. We believe we have found an effective
way to meet all of these needs while at the same time not increasing our staff budget for 2019.

speaker of the evening.

The ESUMC Preschool/
Toddler Class recently
presented a “Giving
Thanks” Tree during the
contemporary service
this past Sunday. They
started it by listing things
on the leaves that they
are thankful to God
for. Their hope is that
you will join them in
thanking God and add
your thanks to the tree
leaves in the next few
weeks so the tree will
blossom with gratitude.
The Tree is located in
Oberholtzer Hall and we
thank you for your
participation.
OK’s 55+ THANKSGIVING LUNCHEON at Monroe Area
County Vo Tech School
Due to inclement weather, the scheduled
Thanksgiving Luncheon of November 15th is
rescheduled to Tuesday, November 20th at
12pm. Please arrive by 11:45am and bring a
photo ID. Cost: $10/person (to be collected at
the door). Transportation assistance
is available for the those in need by contacting

A NEW weekday Bible Study is
coming! Pastor Jim will be
conducting a four-week Advent
Study which is perfect for those
who don’t drive after
dark. Starting Monday,
November 26 at 3:00 pm we
will look at each of the four
Gospels, one each week until Monday, December 17. The
Advent Study will run from 3:00-4:15 pm each Monday, with
ONE EXCEPTION. The second study will be conducted on
Tuesday, December 4 instead of Monday, December 3, as
Pastor Todd will be away. Each study will be devoted to one of
the Gospels and what it teaches us about the birth of Jesus.
When we come to the Book of Mark, there is no birth narrative.
In the case of Mark, we will ask why he doesn’t mention the birth
of Jesus in Bethlehem and observe what he does emphasize
about the life of Jesus. We will compare the birth stories in
Matthew and Luke, and look carefully at John’s theological
interpretation of Jesus’ coming into our world. It will be fun,
informative, and casual. All are invited, and when the study is
over, you are also invited to stay for the Monday evening
Community Meal. The Advent Study will take place in
Oberholtzer Hall.

ESUMC at the Movies
We had a great turn out for our free
showing of “I CAN ONLY IMAGINE”
at the Pocono Cinema last
Sunday. If you missed it, keep an
eye out for details of our December
movie showing of “THE STAR”.
Olde Time Christmas at Quiet Valley
Living Historical Farm
Our choir is participating as Christmas Carolers at Quiet Valley
Living Historical Farm in Stroudsburg (347 Quiet Valley Rd) on
Sunday, December 2nd, from 3pm-5pm, and invites you to
attend this wonderful program that shares the true spirit of
Christmas. The admission is $10 Adults, $5 Children which
supports the non-profit farm museum.
Experience Christmas in the 1800s with a winter evening on the
farm. Guides dressed in period clothing lead you by lantern on
a candlelight tour including a Live Barnyard
Nativity, Schoolhouse with Caroling, and
Storytelling in a cabin. There will be
complimentary refreshments, and a holiday
gift shop of handcrafted items. The tour is
an 1-1/2 to 2 hours long, so come early to
hear our choir!

Cold Weather Shelter Ministry
The Cold Weather Shelter Program opened at
the Wesleyan church on November 4th
providing a warm, safe respite from the cold
for homeless members of the community.
Local churches, representing different
denominations, have stepped up to volunteer.
ESUMC will be covering the 1st full week in
each month, through March.
We are in need of ESUMC volunteers to fill
the slots for December, January, February,
and March! Please contact Ana Price at

serve. This is a very important service for
our community.

United Methodist Women
November Dollar Challenge
Men’s & Women’s stocking stuffers, to prepare
for gifts to the homeless and other needy
families in the community. All items can be
purchased at one of the many dollar stores.

ESUMC has an opening for a Congregational Care Director. We are
looking for someone to join our team who will be responsible to
monitor and assist those in our congregation needing special care.
This would include follow-up with our members who are sick,
hospitalized, in recovery and bereaved. They would make regular
visitations to our shut-ins and those in the hospitals, respond to
those in crisis at the pastor’s request, consult and counsel
members as requested, maintain visitation records, and coordinate
our card ministry.
Qualifications: Personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a
mature faith, sympathetic with the United Methodist doctrine and
policy, comfortable in times of crisis, emotionally stable, a good
listener with the ability to effectively communicate with others,
ability to organize and manage, team player working for the good
of all areas of the church. Post high school education and
counseling experience a plus. This position is 15 hours per
week, with a flexible work schedule. To apply: Please submit
