The Best Way to Spread Diversity in College.

In the article "Minority Students Clubs: Segregation or Integration?", Gabriela Moro

relies on rhetorics to capture the audiences attention and express her views on minority clubs.

Rhetorics has always been used since created by Aristotle, it is defined as ways of persuasion. At

the heart of rhetorics are logos, ethos, pathos, these are different rhetorics that are used. Each

rhetoric is used differently to connect to the audience, depending on what rhetorics are used,

determines how the information is processed by readers, and how it will influence what the

readers think on the topic. Ethos is information that is ethical and it can vary from different

topics, can be used to connect to morality of people. Pathos deals with information that relies

heavily on emotional content, depending on how the writer wants to reach determines what

emotions are used such as sadness, anger, happiness, etc. Logos is used to prove to the audience

that the information given is true. In the article, Moro writes about how she believes colleges can

expand diversity in school. She uses ethos, logo, and pathos, with the goal to make her argument

about multicultural clubs as persuasive as possible. She wants to end segregation in colleges so

students will be prepared for diverse work environments.

The motivation for the article is expanding diversity. "Minority Students Clubs:

Segregation or Integration?" comes from Moro's belief that changes should be made in colleges

to ensure that diversity can accrue on campuses. Moro questions the true effect of minority clubs,
Lemus !2

if they truly help spread diversity, "However, do these minority groups amplify students'

tendency to interact only with those who are similar to themselves?" (Moro269). She brings up a

common belief held by people who oppose minority clubs; that if people of the the same culture

make club only for their minority they will not wish to communicate with people of different

ethnicities. She wishes to find indisputable evidence on how to properly spread diversity in

schools without self-segregating accruing in college, this means people will become dived

because they will only wish to be with people of the same culture and beliefs. She gives

information on both sides of the argument on minority clubs, to try find a effective way to spread

diversity that is not biased. She believes students should not only have the ability to get proper

education at college but also have the experience with diversity to prepare them for a world full

diversity. Without being introduced to a diverse environment early on people can be doomed to

have small understanding of different types of people. With out having the ability to comfortably

communicate with different minority's self segregation will continue to happen not only in

college but also society. Moro uses ethos to explain why it is morally important for colleges to

provide a diverse campus.

Ethos is a main factor in Moro's argument because she talks about different ways to

encourage diversity and diversity is when people of different backgrounds are able to be with

each other in a healthy environment. The author states what colleges need "Minority

representation on US college campuses has increased significantly in recent years, and many

schools have made it a priority to increase diversity on their campuses in order to prepare

students for culturally diverse US democratic society" (Moro269). Diversity has become a very

important and needed priority that people want want from college. Many people of different
Lemus !3

backgrounds have the opportunity to receive education in America, and because of this many of

these people are attending college. College is not the only place where people will face diversity,

they might face diversity in work environments, or other environments out of high school.

People need to get used to the reality that at some point in their life they will come across a

person that is culturally different from them. Being able to operate in a diversified society is a

very important skill to learn. Diversity is a ethical topic. She uses the information of a higher

need for minority students as a way to tell the readers, that being is diversified community will

students to adapt and prepare them for the future. Moro tries to a effective way to satisfy the need

for diversity in colleges.

The ethos is used by showing what she believes will bring more diversity . The author

states her opinion on minority clubs, "While minority clubs have proven to be beneficial to

minority students in some cases, particularly on campuses that are not very diverse , my research

suggests that colleges would enrich the educational experience for all students by multicultural

clubs as well." (Moro270). Multicultural clubs are what she believes will bring different

ethnicities together without any consequences. She wants the readers to believe that her way is

the most productive way to bring diversity and make a community in college where people can

thrive. She want people to support the idea of multicultural clubs, because those clubs are the

best way to make a divers community in college. Other rhetorics are used to pursued the readers

to believe what the Moro is saying such as Pathos.

Moro uses pathos to emotional connect with her audience and support her idea for clubs.

The author shows the opinion of a student regarding minority clubs, "As Delgado put it,"I

thought [cultural clubs were] something I maybe didn't need, but come November, I missed
Lemus !4

speaking Spanish and I missed having tacos, and other things like that." (Moro272). Minority

clubs gives a comfortable environment for people to be with people of similar and give them the

chance to practice their culture This quote shows the sadness a student felt before joining a club,

this emotion can show Moro's audience that clubs are a factor that determines if people of

minority's will be comfortable at college. It's purpose is to move people to support clubs. When

the emotion of sadness is used, it is meant to make people sorry for something and want to

change it. Pathos is used to show the importance of the clubs. Logos is also used in the article to

add evidence.

Logos is used to so that studies have been done to prove that the author has the wisdom to

talk about this topic. Moro introduces a study that supports the idea of minority clubs"A study by

Samuel D. Museus in the Journal of College Student Development found that minority student

programs help students to stay connected with their culture in college and help ease first-year

minority students' transition into the college environment" (Moro 271) . Logos is used to let the

readers know that is very informed on this issue and able to give information without being

biased. This evidence shows that Moro is willing to take evidence from different people. The

evidence agrees with her statement that a type of club that expresses ethnicities should be made.

Throughout the article Moro uses rhetorics to strengthen her argument about multi

minority clubs. She uses logos, ethos, and pathos in different parts in her article. This article

mostly consists of ethos information, because it talks about minority clubs. Pathos and logos are

less used but still add information that helps the audience understand Moro's argument. People

need to be willing to react with people of different culture and should give more effort to

understand different ethnicities.
