Background for Teachers

Calories are measured units of energy provided by consumed foods and liquids.
Activity requires different amounts of energy which is provided by the potential stores and the food we
consume.
Good calories provide long lasting positive energy.
Bad calories provide short term spurts of energy at a cost.
How to create charts and graphs
Abiltiy to extrapolate and summarize data produced in charts and graphs.

Student Prior Knowledge

General elementary mathematic ability.
Ability to chart and read graphs.
Knowledge of personal information needed to calculate caloric needs.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will learn how to track their food consumption and energy expenditure.
Students will take what they learn in class into the real world and use it to help make choices in food
and activity.
Instructional Procedures
Students will start with journaling one full days worth of food intake and activity.
(Teacher will have preset group study areas set up prior to the start of class.)
As students enter class, divide them into groups of 4 or 5 and send them to the group areas.
Students are to research and calculate calories from food they ate plus activities.
Students will use this data to calculate and graph the total caloric intake and caloric expenditure.
Students will reflect and discuss amongst their group, how different choices yeilded different results.
One member from each group will get up and provide a thoughtful discussion on what their group
learned.
We will have a final discussion on trends in how students felt after they consumed different foods.
I will folllow up the class with a small lecture to help tie the concepts together

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Work with another student.
Bring a scale for students to experiment with (ounces, pounds, kilograms, and grams)
Allow students to use calculators

Extensions
A gram of protein or carbohydrate is 4 calories/kcal
A gram of fat provides 9 calories/kcal
One cup of milk = 8 grams of protein (8 grams X 4 kcal = 32 calories from protein)
0.5 cups of pasta = 17 grams of carbs (17 grams X 4 kcal = 68 calories from carbs)
One Large McDonalds frenchfry = 22 grams of fat (22 grams X 9 kcal = 198 total calories from fat)
Now have students make calculations with the above but using dif

Assessment Plan
Students will rate their current eating and activities levels using workable charts.
