InTasc 9: Reflection
This standard is defined in the following manner: The teacher engages in ongoing
professional learning and uses evidence to continually evaluate his/her practice, particularly the
effects of his/her choices and actions on others (learners, families, other professionals, and the
community), and adapts practice to meet the needs of each learner. In other words, this standard
states that effective instructors will use data from their classrooms in order to adapt their
teaching practices to match the abilities and interests of their students. Both pre and post testing
allows an educator to collect information that can be used to modify their instruction to match
the strong suits of their students. While it is important to instill the desired knowledge listed in
the curriculum, by taking note of student differences and tracking student success, educators gain
tracking the abilities of their students, educators tailor lessons that instill a desire to learn in
every student. This standard can be applied in every content area; however, in ELA specifically,
student data can be tracked and notated through the progression of their writing and their
In my ELA classrooms, I track student engagement and ability while they complete a
specific instructional activity. If students are engaging in a graffiti discussion, I gauge their
understanding and engagement by noting their personal responses and how much they enjoyed
the process of the assignment itself. In doing this, I was able to come to the conclusion that the
students were both happy and responsive during the process of a graffiti discussion.
