TExES Competencies

Competency 001:

The teacher understands human development processes and applies this knowledge to plan

instruction and ongoing assessment that motivate students and are responsive to their

developmental characteristics and needs.

Summary:

The teacher should have a basic understanding on what a child is capable of at their age and be

able to access if that child is behind or learning at an acceptable rate. The teacher should also

take this into account when planning lessons and know rather it will resonate with the students or

not.

Competency 002:

The teacher understands student diversity and knows how to plan learning experiences and

design assessments that are responsive to differences among students and that promote all

students’ learning.

Summary:

A teacher should be aware and prepared for students that have different backgrounds and be able

to teach to each of them. Lessons should be inclusive and culturally diverse in order to meet

these needs.

Competency 003:
Johnson 2

The teacher understands procedures for designing effective and coherent instruction and

assessment based on appropriate learning goals and objectives.

Summary:

Teachers should be able to put together lesson plans that are clear and testable when a

appropriate. Lessons should be well thought out and cohesive.

Competency 004:

The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student learning and

demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and appropriate

assessments.

Summary:

A teacher should be able to hold the class’s attention while teaching in order to have effective

lessons. A teacher should be aware that kids learn differently and be able to tailor lessons to their

specific students and be able to test the students on this knowledge when applicable.

Competency 005:

The teacher knows how to establish a classroom climate that fosters learning, equity and

excellence and uses this knowledge to create a physical and emotional environment that is safe

and productive.

Summary:

A teacher should have a classroom that produces the right energy and mood for kids to be able to

learn and for the kids to feel safe and open. This is done with the actual set up of the room and

the atmosphere of the room, the mood.

Competency 006:
Johnson 3

The teacher understands strategies for creating an organized and productive learning

environment and for managing student behavior.

Summary:

A teacher is responsible for controlling the student’s behavior and must maintain order and

balance in the classroom in order to produce a place where the students can learn with minimal

distractions from misbehavioral outbursts.

Competency 007:

The teacher understands and applies principles and strategies for communicating effectively in

varied teaching and learning contexts.

Summary:

A teacher should be able to say the same thing in several different ways in order to convey it to

all the students.

Competency 008:

The teacher provides appropriate instruction that actively engages students in the learning

process.

Summary:

A teacher should be able to explain concepts and give directions affectively and also in a way

that excites and includes the students.

Competency 009:

The teacher incorporates the effective use of technology to plan, organize, deliver and evaluate

instructions for all students.

Summary:

Teachers should be able to operate basic technology in order to incorporate into their lesson

planning and in class instructions and activities.

Competency 010:

The Teacher monitors student performance and achievement; provides students with timely,

high-quality feedback; and responds flexibly to promote learning for all students.

Summary:

Teachers should pay close attention to their students’ progression and make sure they are were

they are supposed to be. A teacher should also be able to communicate this progress rather good

or sub par with the student in a positive way that does not discourage the child. A teacher should

also be able to change the way they are teaching if students are not responding well or not

learning.

Competency 011:

The teacher understands the importance of family involvement in children’s education and

knows how to interact and communicate effectively with families.

Summary:

A child’s homelife is a major factor in a student’s education and a teacher should recognize this

and involve the student’s family as often as possible and keep their family updated with progress

of the child and ways to improve their learning.

Competency 012:

The teacher enhances professional knowledge and skills by effectively interacting with other

members of the educational community and participating in various types of professional

activities.

Summary:

Teachers should constantly be learning and developing their teaching process and can encourage

this by talking with others in the same field and brainstorming together in order to make

advances in their classrooms.

Competency 013:

The teacher understands and adheres to legal and ethical requirements for educators and is

knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas.

Summary:

Teachers should alway remain appropriate and professional. It is important to know the legal and

ethical requirements expected of them and to always follow them in order to remain effective.
