to extend the power supply in emergency condition of ship when main generator is
on down working/ blackout.
A self-contained emergency source of electrical power shall be provided.
According to The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS
chapter II, Part 1, Regulation 43):
The electrical power available shall be sufficient to supply all those services that are
essential for safety in an emergency, due regard being paid to such services as may
have to be operated multaneously. The emergency source of electrical power shall
be capable, having regard to starting currents and the transitory nature of certain
loads, of supplying simultaneously at least the following services for the periods
a. For 3 hours
Emergency lighting at every survival craft preparation station, muster and
embarkation station and over the sides.
b. For 18 hours
(i) in all service and accommodation alleyways, stairways and exits, personnel
lift cars and personnel lift trunks;
(ii) in the machinery spaces and main generating stations including their
control positions;
(iii) in all control stations, machinery control rooms, and at each main and
emergency switchboard
(iv) at all stowage positions for fireman’s outfits;
(v) at the steering gear; and
(vi) at the emergency fire pump, at the sprinkler pump, if any, and at the
emergency bilge pump, if any, and at the starting positions of their motors;

Total Required power for emergency lightning is (Watt) = 1060

So, total power of emergency needed is :

= Power of Equipments for emergency + Power of lights for emergency
= 2411.5 + 1060
= 3471.5 watt

1.1. DETERMINATION OF BATTERY REQUIREMENTS

The calculation needs the following battery : (estimation for rescue time
Total emergency power = 3471.5 Watt according SOLAS 2012 Chapter II
Total rescue time = 18 Hours Part D Reg 43)

Total Battery Power = Total Emergency Power x Total Rescue Time

= 3471.5 x 18
= 62487 WH

Voltage Emergency Battery = 24 Volt

AH required = Total Battery Power
= Voltage of Emergency Battery
62487
= AH
24
= 2603.63 AH

1.2. SELECTION OF BATTERY

a) MG
Merk = MG ENERGY SYSTEMS
Type = Li-Ion LFP Battery
Nominal Voltage = 26.4 Volt
Rates Capacities = 180 AH
Weight = 55 Kg
Height = 351 mm
Length = 623 mm
Width = 193 mm

* To gain the total AH, the quantity of battery should be :

= AH required / AH battery
= 2603.63 / 180
= 14.5
= 15 Unit Battery

* Correction for Load Factor :

= AH total / AH battery
= 2603.63 / (15 x 180)
= 0.9643

b) Deep Blue (Power)

Merk = Deep Blue (Power)

Type = DB12-2-3ETX
Nominal Voltage = 24 Volt
Rates Capacities = 220 AH
Weight = 77.1 Kg
Height = 561 mm
Length = 265 mm
Width = 286 mm

* To reach the AH, the amount of battery used is :

= AH required / AH battery
= 2603.63 / 220
= 11.8
= 12 Unit Battery

* Correction for Load Factor :

= AH total / AH battery
= 2603.63 / (12 x 220)
= 0.9862

c) Master Volt

Merk = Master Volt

Type = MLI Ultra 24/5000
Nominal Voltage = 26.4 Volt
Rates Capacities = 180 AH
Weight = 58 Kg
Height = 355 mm
Length = 622 mm
Width = 197 mm

* To reach the AH, the amount of battery used is :

= AH required / AH battery
= 1943.63 / 180
= 14.46
= 15 Unit battery

* Correction for Load Factor :

= AH total / AH battery
= 2603.63 / (15 x 180)
= 0.9643

From all the calculation and comparison of the batteries, we choose battery that
has load factor is almost equal with 1. The consideration of the battery is:
