Power Plant Operator

Operated, maintained, and inspected a power plant rated at 18 MW comprised of all


electrical switch gear components such as remote control switches, power transfer
controls, circuit breakers, and voltage rheostats

 Documented and analyzed calculations from ammeters, voltmeters, frequency


meters, and temperature and pressure indicator devices
 Maintained accurate accountability for auxiliary equipment including air compressors,
cooling water pumps, pre-lube pumps, fuel oil pumps, and centrifuges
 Monitored and adjusted waste heat recovery system
 Assisted in the development of fuel product inventory and safety by ensuring the
proper storage of 100,000 gallons of diesel fuel
 Ensured compliance with EPA regulations by maintaining up-to-date records

 Roles and Responsibilities
 My job duties were to:
 1) Monitor power plant equipment indicators to detect evidence of operating
problems
 2) Adjust controls to generate specified electrical power or to regulate the flow of
power between generating stations substations
 3) Control power generating equipment, including boilers, turbines, generators,
or reactors, using control boards or semi-automatic equipment
 4) Regulate equipment operations conditions, like water levels, based on
instrument data or from computers
 5) Take regulatory action, based on readings from charts, meters gauges, at
established intervals
 6) Start or stop generators, auxiliary pumping equipment, turbines, or other
power plant equipment as necessary
 7) Inspect records or log book entries or communicate with plant personnel to
assess equipment operating status
 8) Control or maintain auxiliary equipment, like pumps, fans, compressors,
condensers, feedwater heaters, filters, or chlorinators, to supply water, fuel,
lubricants, air, or auxiliary power
 9) Clean, lubricate, or maintain equipment, like generators, turbines, pumps, or
compressors, to prevent failure or deterioration
 10) Communicate with systems operators to regulate and coordinate line voltages
and transmission loads frequencies
 11) Record and compile operational data by completing maintaining forms, logs,
or reports
 12) Open and close valves switches in sequence to start or shut down auxiliary
units
 13) Collect oil, water, or electrolyte samples for laboratory analysis

cells or microturbines, to produce energy on-site for manufacturing or other
commercial purposes
 22) Operate, control, or monitor equipment, like acid or gas carbon dioxide
removal units, carbon dioxide compressors, and pipelines, to capture, store, or
transport carbon dioxide exhaust
 23) Operate, control, or monitor gasifiers or related equipment, like coolers,
water quenches, water gas shifts reactors, or sulfur recovery units, to produce
syngas or electricity from coal
 24) Operate, control, or monitor integrated gasification combined cycle IGCC or
related equipment, like air separation units, to generate electricity from coal

Job Duties and Tasks for: "Power Plant Operator"


1) Adjust controls to generate specified electrical power, or to regulate the
flow of power between generating stations and substations.
2) Control and maintain auxiliary equipment, such as pumps, fans,
compressors, condensers, feedwater heaters, filters, and chlorinators, to
supply water, fuel, lubricants, air, and auxiliary power.

3) Control generator output to match the phase, frequency, and voltage of


electricity supplied to panels.

4) Make adjustments or minor repairs, such as tightening leaking gland and


pipe joints; report any needs for major repairs.

5) Monitor and inspect power plant equipment and indicators to detect


evidence of operating problems.

6) Open and close valves and switches in sequence upon signals from
other workers, in order to start or shut down auxiliary units.

7) Operate or control power generating equipment, including boilers,


turbines, generators, and reactors, using control boards or semi-automatic
equipment.

8) Place standby emergency electrical generators on line in emergencies


and monitor the temperature, output, and lubrication of the system.

9) Regulate equipment operations and conditions such as water levels,


based on data from recording and indicating instruments or from
computers.

10) Replenish electrolytes in batteries and oil in voltage transformers, and


reset tripped electric relays.

11) Start or stop generators, auxiliary pumping equipment, turbines, and


other power plant equipment, and connect or disconnect equipment from
circuits.

transmission loads and frequencies, and line voltages.

16) Examine and test electrical power distribution machinery and


equipment, using testing devices.
