Chapter 3

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

In this chapter, the methods of how the data was gathered, instruments that was

used and the data that have been collected will be summed up.

Research Methodology

The study’s method is qualitative research. Qualitative research refers to have the

aim, experience and definition as it appear as what the crucial ideas are for aiming a

deeper understanding of the participants’ perspective. The qualitative research is a main

branch of inquiry. It shares realistic concern as the foundation of their inquiry. In a study,

it is stated that a researcher should be have a free will to choose its method, techniques

and procedures as long as it satisfies what the research needs the best (Phillips &

Burbules, 2000).

Description of Participants

In this research, the participants are chosen in the grade 11 all strand section in

Sacred Heart Academy of Novaliches (SHAN). There are about approximately 1,000

students of population in the area. The researcher classified the participants depending

if they are a social media sites consumer.

The students of grade 11 are chosen due to the requirements and busy schedule

of other grade level. Choosing the grade 11 helps the researcher to flex and test its limits

to gather more knowledge and data. As it was the same level as the researcher, the

selected grade 11 are easier to handle and these participants are more transparent if it
compared to other grade level. On another note, the researcher based on (Creswell,

2014) phenomenology study which elaborated that participants should only between

three to ten participants needed. This is to ensure that the research would be no another

existing major concepts.

The participants chosen are most likely to have a different traits, attitudes,

personality and way of living. And so, these participants also ranges from sixteen (16) to

seventeen (17) years old based on the research’s aim to be only within the youth.

Researcher Instruments

The research seeks to identify the impact of the youth’s self-esteem while in the

use of social media. And so, an interview was in use with an individual process to satisfy

its aim in the problem. This interview sheets were composed of questions that will help to

determine the possible answers and conclusion in the end of this process. These

questionnaires are a Likert type of scale in which it contains ten items that deals with

general feelings of people. It was developed by Dr. Morris in the year 1965 cited in a study

of Paculan (2012-1013). The researcher additionally used a recorder in order for it to

gather the relevant data.

Data-Gathering Procedure

The data-gathering procedure went firstly on sending a formal letter for the adviser

of the class and to the participants in order for them to acquire the clean process of the

whole said interview. This letter was composed of the brief introduction of the study. The

process of interview were done in the span of two weeks due to the limited time given by

18
the research adviser. In addition, every recording of the interview were being transcribe

one by one and analyzed precisely.
