Anti-smuggling monitoring system for forest based on Carriots

ABSTRACT
The purpose of this project work is to design an anti-smuggling system which is useful in
Protected Forest areas. The Theft and illegal movement of commercial trees like Sandalwood,
Teak, Sagwan., etc have been a major concern. It is also a theft to Forest Flora and fauna. As
concerned citizens our ideology is to prevent such smuggling activities by using latest
technologies. Each tree is having with one single board computer, which consists of sensors,
camera, GPS and Alert module.

INTRODUCTION
Sometime before, when earth was framing its inward center and condition, it clearly
had a decent arrangement of every zone, some portion of nature ought to fit in cycle together
so it would act and work like a well-kept machine like todays installed frameworks are
working persistently. Yet, from the past few years, the newspapers are often filled with news
about smuggling of trees like sandal and rosewood etc. The sandalwood trees of India have
turned out to be imperiled in recent years , and trying to spare it from outside sources, the
Indian government is attempting to set a farthest point the exportation of sandalwood. It has
been as of now government controlled however not legitimately kept up, and evacuation is
not permitted whether on individual or open grounds until the tree is 30 years of age. This has
not prevented numerous poachers from chopping trees down when experts are not viewing.

Pirating of sandalwood has made financial and peace issues in regions circumscribing
the condition of various states in India. To maintain a strategic distance from such kind of
carrying and to spare the backwoods around the world some preventive frameworks should
be created. We are framing a framework which can be utilized to confine this pirating. The
tree is already government controlled, and deforestation is banned until the tree is thirty years
old. However, people resort to illegal smuggling of trees without thinking about the effect of
their action. Anti-smuggling system is required to detect illegal logging and cutting of trees.
An antitheft alert system is developed to reduce deforestation, using advanced methodologies
and IOT.

Internet of things using Carriots have emerged as one of the most promising research
areas in recent years and are widely recognized as powerful means to offer platform as a
service.

What is Carriots?

It is a Platform as a Service (Paas) designed for Internet of Things (IoT) and Machine to
Machine (M2M) projects

What you can do with Carriots?

• It Collects and stores any kind of data from your devices.

• It build powerful solutions with our application engine.
• Deploy and scale from tiny prototypes to thousands of devices.

1.1 Objective of the Project

The main objective of the project is to provide Real Time Forest Anti-Smuggling
Monitoring System based on IOT. And to Make valuable trees as Tree- Techtronic by
designing a WSN based Anti-Poaching.Improvised methodology and separate cloud
integration to inform the authority via Email configuration.Adopting single board
computer (Raspberry Pi) to the proposed model can achieve peripheral connectivity and
integration of cloud ease.

Problem Statement

 Smuggling/Theft of Trees has led to an increase risk of Natural Resource getting

extinguished. The theft of trees causes a huge economic loss to people who grow trees
for a livelihood.

 Hiring Security personals for monitoring the entire area for suspicious Activity is one
of the methods to control poaching. However, due to physical limitations in Human it
is hard to monitor the entire area continuously ,thus the hiring of guards proves
unreliable and inadequate.

 Installation of CCTV cameras for covering large area proves very costly and is hard to
implement due to limitation of power supply in deep forest areas.

 Also, the latest trend for protection of trees is to tag an RF-ID to trees just like tagging
an Animal for knowing the whereabouts of a particular tree. However, this technology
doesn't give Real Time Information while the activity is happening.

LITERATURE SURVEY
 Anti-Smuggling System for Trees in Forest using Flex Sensor and Zigbee Volume 3, Issue 9,
September 2014, Narhari R. Kotkar M.E. This paper explains as to how to restrict the
smuggling activities and to save the forest-areas on Earth using some preventive measures.

Generation DOI: 10.9790/2834-1204054651 www.iosrjournals.org 47 | Page using a mini
Sensor network using zigbee module , Flex sensor , GSM Module and GPS using the platform
of Visual Basic.

 The concept has been further strengthened in Preventive System for Forests Volume 4 Issue
1, Jan - Feb 2016, which talks of the main three units to be used in the Module to be designed
like Tree Unit , Area/Sub Server Unit and Server Unit. It concentrates on Zigbee and GSM
technologies while maintaining the Server on Visual Basic.

 Accelerometers are based on MEMS Technology – Micro Electro Mechanical Systems .

Details on MEMS are referred from Lee, G. H. Yoon, J Park, S. Seok, K. Chun, K. Lee,
Development and analysis of the vertical capacitive accelerometer, Sensors and Actuators A
119 (2012) 8-18. The paper in details discusses on MEMS accelerometer which is also
referred as vertical capacitive torsional accelerometer (TXL).

 Android based Anti-Smuggling Module has been discussed in Anti-Smuggling Alarm System
for Trees in Forest Using Android . The idea of using accelerometers and temperature sensors
forming a mini sensor networking is introduced here . Also Android based concept is very
ideal for current scenario since almost all Mobile handsets are Android based. The anti-
smuggling squad can immediately receive messages on their handsets during any interruption
to the trees.

 A tree tour with radio frequency identification(RFID) and a personal digital assistant,
conference paper , December 2013. The latest trend for protection of trees is to tag an RF-ID
to trees

METHODOLOGY

Anti-smuggling monitoring system for forest based on Carriots

In the proposed system raspberry is used as single board computer which is equivalent
to CPU

The proposed system is followed with a Raspberry Pi processor which is SBC and the
sensors like 3-axis Accelerometer , Rpi Camera, GPS sensor And alert system.

 To prevent the illegal poaching of trees, a special sensors like 3-axis accelerometer is
used to check the angle of the tree. ( So when the tree got cut down implies to vary
the angle )

 The GPS sensor is used to continuously sense the location of the tree and compares
the predefined location which has Decided during the installation procedure of the
proposed set up.

 The Alert system will be designed in both software and hardware: Hardware- Fixing
up Buzzer and laser light to create awareness to surrounding environment during
smuggling of trees. Software- Sending email notification alert message to the
Authority at the right time .

 The proposed system complete had its advantage in Integrating the platform as a
service to model and makes the system much more faster and accurate.
