Lesson Planning

Waynesburg University

Writing the lesson plan:

Translating thoughts into a plan of action
_____________________________________________
Pennsylvania Academic Standard(s) addressed during this lesson:
(Provide Standard number and statement)

1.6.3 E (Participate in small and large group discussions and presentations)

1.6.3 F (Use media for learning purposes)
1.8.3 A (Locate information using appropriate sources and strategies)

Lesson Objective(s)
(Stated in observable and measurable terms)

Upon completion of the Glogster poster, the second grade “scientists” will present their posters to the entire
class using appropriate volume and speech, and will use proper vocabulary. 1.6.3 E (Participate in small and
large group discussions and presentations)

By the end of the lesson, the second grade students will be able to use Glogster on the computer to make an
interactive poster that includes pictures of either herbivores or carnivores with little to no errors. 1.6.3 F (Use
media for learning purposes)

After learning about the Glogster program and about Herbivores and Carnivores, the second grade students
will locate information about three other animals that eat plants or animals and use their newly found
information in their final Glogster presentation. 1.8.3 A (Locate information using appropriate sources and
strategies)

Assessment Plan
(What will be done to determine if lesson objectives have been met?)

Students will be assessed by:

• Glogster poster
• Participation in lesson
• Presentation of Poster
Materials:

• Gloster Presentation
• Smartboard
• Laptop
• Connector cords
• Computer (1 per student)
• Glogster Rubric
• Picture of Carnivore
• Picture of Herbivore
Inclusion Techniques for Students with Special Needs:

Students with special needs will be included into the classroom. This student will have a computer in close
proximity to the teacher for further guidance and will also have a Glogster poster template already set up.
Enrichment Techniques:

Students can take what they have learned and not only make one poster on the carnivore or herbivore
but make both posters as enrichment.

Lesson Differentiation (What modifications/accommodations will be made to ensure that ALL students have access to and are able
to participate in the lesson):

Students will use the Glogster in several different ways. The differentiation will come from the amount of clip
art selection each student will have to choose from. For instance, an advanced student would have many animals
clip art to choose from. The theory behind this is because they will have to use their knowledge or research the
animals to determine what it eats. A student with average ability will have many animal clip arts to choose from
but only a few animals that would differ in what their dinosaur eats. Students with special needs will only have
the clip art of animals that eat the same thing as their carnivore/herbivore dinosaur.

Lesson Presentation
Introduction/Motivational Activities/Anticipatory Set:

Students will watch a video on the smartboard about the herbivore Triceratops.

Detailed Teaching Sequence:
(Provide sufficient detail that would enable a substitute to effectively present this lesson. Bulleted statements are preferred)

1. Students will talk about herbivores and create a list of other herbivores on the smartboard (dinosaur or
present day animal).
2. The teacher will discuss the characteristics of herbivores by looking at a picture of an herbivore:
a. Flat teeth
b. Larger body size
c. Slow mover
d. Rocks in stomach
3. The teacher will then ask the student what the opposite of herbivore is? (Carnivore)
4. The class will brainstorm other animals that eat meat.
5. The teacher will have students discuss the characteristics of carnivores by looking at a picture of a
carnivore:
a. Sharp teeth
b. Slimmer build (for running)
c. Sharp claws
6. The teacher will explain Glogster to the students.
7. The teacher will show the students the premade poster of the activity on www.macconnell.weebly.com.
8. The teacher will guide the students through the Glogster site.
9. Students will begin work on their own Glogster poster using the school made username and password.

Guided Practice/Independent Practice/Assessment Activities

Guided practice will be offered at the beginning of the project, where the teacher will guide students through the
website. Students will then have independent practice when they decide which pictures of animals would match
their carnivore or herbivore. The students will be assessed by their finished Glogster poster according to the
rubric.

Closure:

1. The teacher will have the students present their poster.

2. The class will keep track of the posters to make sure the students have everything correct.
