Short Questions

SSC Standard, Chapter -2

(Motion)

1. What is rest?
When an object does not change its position with time, then it is called rest.
2. What is motion?
When an object changes its position with time, then it is called motion.
3. Define Linear Motion.
If anything moves along a straight line then its motion is called Linear Motion.
4. Define Circular Motion.
When a body rotates about a particular point or a line, keeping the distance of the
particles of the body unchanged, it is called circular motion.
Example: Motion of electric fans.
5. Define Translational Motion.
If an object moves in such a way that all the particles of the object travel the same
distance, at a same time, in the same direction then its motion is called translational
motion.
6. Define Periodic Motion.
If the motion of a moving object is such that it passes repeatedly through a definite
point in the same direction in the same manner in a definite interval of time, then this
motion is called a periodic motion.
Example: Vibrational motion of our heart.
7. What is scalar quantities?
Scalar quantities are those quantities which are fully described by a magnitude
(numerical value) only.
8. What is vector quantities?
Vector quantities are those quantities which are fully described by both a magnitude
and a direction.
9. What is distance?
Distance is a scalar quantity that refers to "how much ground an object has covered"
during its motion.
10. What is displacement?
Displacement is a vector quantity that refers the difference between initial and final
position of an object with direction.
11. What is speed?
Speed is the rate of changes of distance with respect to time.
𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒

12. What is velocity?
Velocity is the rate of changes of displacement at a direction with respect to time.
𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 =
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒

13. What is average speed?

Average speed is the rate of total distance travelled by an object with its travelled
time.
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑐𝑒
𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑒𝑑 =
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
14. What is average velocity?
Average velocity is the rate of total displacement travelled by an object with its
travelled time.
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑝𝑙𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡
𝑎𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑔𝑒 𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦 =
𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
15. What is uniform speed?
If an object covers equal distance in equal intervals of time then it is said to be uniform
speed.
16. What is uniform velocity?
If an object covers equal distance in a particular direction in in equal intervals of time
then it is said to be uniform velocity.
17. What is instantaneous speed?
Instantaneous speed is a scalar measure of the rate of movement of a body expressed
as the rate of change of position with respect to time at a particular point.
18. What is instantaneous velocity?
Instantaneous velocity is a vector measure of the rate of movement of a body in a
particular direction expressed as the rate of change of position with respect to time at
a particular point.
19. Define acceleration.
The rate of change of velocity with time is called acceleration.
𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒 𝑜𝑓 𝑣𝑒𝑙𝑜𝑐𝑖𝑡𝑦
𝑎𝑐𝑐𝑒𝑙𝑒𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 =
𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒
20. Define deceleration/Retardation.
If the velocity decreases with time, it is called deceleration. Deceleration is the
opposite of acceleration.
