Public Issue Project

Grade: Grade 4

Subject: Social Studies

Length of Lesson: 3.5 Hours (over 2-day period)


 Day 1: 1.5 hours
 Day 2: 2 hours

Lesson Overview/Rationale: To identify current public issues and generate possible


solutions for issues. It is important for students to identify and prioritize current issues and
create solutions for these issues.

Curriculum Framework/Standard: Michigan Department of Education Standard


“P3.1- Identifying and Analyzing Public Issues” (From Michigan Department of Education)

Learning Objectives:
 Students will recognize issues that people in the U.S currently encounter
 Students will gather information that further explains their issue and propose solutions.

Technology Uses: Computers and cameras (via tablets, camera recorder, or laptop) for
research and if students decide to use a camera to record their project.

Materials: Computers, textbooks, notebook, writing utensil, poster boards/large paper,


markers, scissors, glue

Procedure:
 Day 1: 1.5 Hours
o Teacher will gather students to explain project. Teacher will open a
discussion to talk about public issues and as a class, generate a list of current
public issues.
o Teacher will divide class into groups of 4-5 students.
o Each group will choose a public issue and decide to make a poster, Power
Point, or a video to (briefly) present their issue and their solution(s) to their
chosen issue.
o Presentation requirements:
 Public issue
 Why it is an issue
 Who/what is affected by this issue
 Data that demonstrates issue
 At least two potential solutions to the issue
 Day 2: 2 Hours

o Students will break into their groups, continue to work on their projects.
o Students will finalize and complete their projects.
o Students will present their projects to the class, about 5 minutes per group.

Assessment: The teacher will assess each project to determine if it includes the
requirements of the project listed above.
