Batik is one of commodities that has a high selling power in Indonesia, especially in

Yogyakarta. Determination of a batik as world heritage by UNESCO in 2009 increases the


demand of batik in Indonesia. In addition, the determination also resulted on establishment of
local regulation in Yogyakarta regarding batik clothes worn in Yogyakarta public school and
state employee of Yogyakarta. This regulation arised the demand of batik, especially hand
writing batik in Yogyakarta. By the increasing number of competitors, ythe batik industries
should focus on the quality of the hand writing batik. One way to get good quality of batik is
by knwong what consumers want.
To search the criteria of quality batik is done by studying literature. These criteria are
then sought the weights and the priorities based on consumer perception. The results of the
weight and priority are processed using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). This method is
able to resolve the problem with multi-criteria. The results obtained from AHP used as input
in the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) to seek business opportunities of batik quality
improvement. This method obtain results that are able to reflect the needs and desire of
consumers in line with the ability of the procedure. Ishikawa’s diagram is then used to
determine the factors that affect the process of hand writing batik production.
The results showed that the material silk, cotton, fibrous material, sogan color, blue
color, colorful, classic motif, classic-development motif, abstract/modern motif, and the price
are considered important criteria in determining the quality of hand writing batik. These results
ar e used as input to search for business opportunities improving the quality of batik, which is
doing research on natural dyes, using the standard use of color, researching right color lock,
worker training (designing, making batik, dying), see the fashion trend each year, maintaining
quality of material that has been good today, testing the combination of fabrics and dyes. In
terms of production, it was founs that the affecting factors of batik quality are human, methods,
and material.
