Temperance movements had long been active in the American political scene with the goal of

promoting abstinence from drinking alcohol. The movement was first organized in the 1840s by religious

denominations, primarily Methodists. This initial campaign started out strong and made a small amount

of progress throughout the 1850s but lost strength shortly thereafter. The Temperance Movement was a

movment to dink less of hard liquors and or refrain from drinking all together. The movement Consisted

mostly of women that have had bad experiences from men either being abusive mentally physically. This

was a religiously dominated. This movement had a huge following until it suddenly died off.

I asked my parents why alcohol is legal they said that Outlawing alcohol was supposed to lower

crime and corruption, Lowe taxes, improve hygiene. Outlawing alcohol for these reasons made people

start bootleggers where alcohol was sold underground. The public voted it back legal in 1933 13 years

later. The great depression probably played a roll in it gatting legalized again.
