It is still reasonably possible to get started with a 401k at age 30, but don't wait any
longer and try to increase your contribution as much as you can. I get a "merit
increase" every year that usually ranges from 2-4%. I automatically increase mine
401k by 1% when that comes out.
permalink embed save parent report reply
Ideally you should start one in your 20s but if you didn’t, you should start one
now.
permalink embed save parent report reply
Agreed, but it isn't solely "advice for your 20s". I am 32 now with a decent
401k, but I am drowning in debt. I may also be switching jobs next year. I
am seriously considering using it to eliminate ALL my debt because the
interest on it is too high. I would then immediately use all the money I
spend each month (about $700) servicing debt to build it back up. It's not
something I would do at 40 or even 35, but I still have just enough time to
pull that off.

I learned this about my mom at a very young age. She had a lot of problems and was
terrible at hiding it. In the last ten years or so she has turned things around and is doing
really good things with her life. As close to a saint as you can get in my eyes.
It took me until 18-20 to really learn this about my dad. He is very successful in a
professional job, and searing loves all of his children. Yet, he has a pretty scumbag
mentality about other people, things he doesn’t like, and things he doesn’t understand.
Still love him to death though.
permalink embed save parent report reply
I was in my late teens / early 20's when I finally realized my dad has a huge
inferiority complex caused by being 5"4', which is why he always puts everyone
down constantly and thinks anyone equally or more successful than him is an
Asshole who had it easy.
I then had the difficult task of having to consciously stop myself from acting the
same way, because up to then I just thought it was normal to do that.

permalink embed save report reply
YES! Don't feel the pressure to settle down. It's not worth getting into a situation where
you end up divoced and a single parent!
permalink embed save parent report reply
I'm 26 and I'm experiencing the opposite. Everyone's off travelling, going back to
school, dying their hair fun colours, and partying day in and day out. This isn't just
people the same age as me, it's people who are in their early to mid thirties.
I am married and I want to buy a house and have babies. People my age look at me
like I've lost my marbles. With the option of travelling the globe, why would I stay
here and raise a family?
When I announced that I was getting married most people acted as though I was an
oppressed child bride (even though I was 24: hardly a child) and people tried to talk
me out of it. "What about being young, wild and free?" "You'll regret it!" "I'm
genuinely curious if you'l still be happy with this decision ten years down the track."
"I always tell people to never get married. I was married in the 80s and it was the
worst decision of my life!" etc. etc.
I know on Reddit everyone complains about the myriad of people who pressure
them to hurry up and get married and have children. But for me, it is the complete
opposite. No one wants me to have kids. For some reason, it's seen as almost a
form of suicide. Some people have even said that I don't really want children and it
is just my husband or society "tricking" me into thinking I want to procreate.
Everywhere I go someone is telling me "don't do it!"

I guess the point they're trying to make is once you have kids, there's no going
back to do all that other stuff, whereas if you do all that stuff now, you can still
have kids later, and maybe bring a bit more knowledge to the table at the same
time.
But it's your life, you do you, if you feel like adventuring later, you can just buy a
sailboat, throw the kids onboard and take to the high seas. (Everyone will be
lining up to tell you this is a terrible idea also, screw those guys)

I have 4 kids and I have to admit, being a divorced parent with 50/50 custody often
seems like a pretty sweet deal. I love my wife to bits, but the idea ofhaving every

Thank you. I swear the whole world is against people over 30 who don't wanna settle
down.

people who are not there yet to know that first priority should be savings, then your

You make your money when you buy, not when you sell. Make lasting relationships, not
conquests. Write actual thank-you notes for simple things, they act as a multiplicative
agent. Smile more, listen more. You were given two ears and one mouth. Use them in that

The 30s are awesome!! Don’t marry an idiot, don’t feel pressured to have kids. You need to
stop blaming your fuck ups on your parents, you’re all grown up now take responsibility for
your own personality. If you don’t like who you are or where your life is or going, go to
therapy and change.
It’s not too late to continue education.
You’ve got this! Enjoy it! I just turned 42 and the next years of my life started when I was
37.
