Lesson Plan 2/2
Lesson Title: Jump Rope Olympics

Grade: 3rd

Equipment for instant activity: Roughly 10-15 hula-hoops and beanbags. For every hula-
hoop you will need one beanbag. Hula-hoop amounts can be determined by the size of
the class.
Area needed for instant activity: Gym or Field

Instant Activity: Builders and Bulldozers (idea found on Pinterest) ~ 10 minutes

Players will be split into two teams. One team will be the ‘builders.’ The builders will run
around and try to put the beanbags inside the hula-hoops. The other team, the
‘bulldozers,’ will run around and try to put the beanbags outside of hula-hoops.
When the whistle blows the teams will run around to various hula-hoops in the gym
either taking the beanbags out of the hula-hoops (bulldozers) or putting the beanbags in
the hula-hoops (builders). When the whistle blows again the team with the most on the
outside or the inside of the hula-hoops—wins! Music is also a great way to signal the
beginning or the end of the game. No guarding the hula-hoops. It’s also fun to switch
teams around, so maybe do this at the end of a round or two.

Visual Representation:
The dots on the inside of the circles represent the beanbags on the inside of the hula-
hoops. The dots on the outside of the circles represent the beanbags on the outside of the
hula-hoops. This is how the gym could be set up and once the students are broken into
groups they know they must either move the beanbag on the outside of the hula-hoop
(bulldozers) or move the beanbag on the inside of the hula-hoop (builders).

Learning Objective: Strand 4
Students will develop cooperative skills and positive personal behavior through
communication and respect for self and others.
Students exhibit personal responsibility in a group setting by working well with others,
accepting feedback, and understanding how rules and etiquette contribute to a safe and
enjoyable environment. Standard 3.4.4 Work cooperatively with peers.

Teaching moment: Throughout the unit, students have learned how to jump rope, jump
roping skills, how to hula-hoop, and hula-hooping skills. In the Wacky Olympics students
will put those skills to the test by working together and assigning out their peers for
different Olympic categories. Students must understand the rules and work cooperatively
with their peers.

Activity: Wacky Olympics

Equipment needed: Jump Ropes (*1 or 2 per team), Hula Hoops (*1 or 2 per team),
Scooters (*1 or 2 per team), cones/markers *depends on amount of students

Activity: ~20 minutes with instruction/assessment

Break students up into even Wacky Olympic teams (make note of your class dynamic and
do your best to make these teams even) and have them line up in front of cone/marker.
• To begin, students will work together in their teams to assign out Olympic
positions. There will be 1 (or 2) jump ropers (each must jump differently—
forwards, backwards, one foot, two foot, etc. 20 times) There will be 1 (or 2)
hula-hoopers (again each must do something different, around the waist, neck,
arm, etc. 20 times) There will be 1 (or 2) scooters, who must go down to the end
of the gym floor and back (each in a different way, either backwards, forwards,
stomach, rear, etc.) There will be 1 (or 2) runners who will run down and back on
the gym floor. * If teams are uneven numbers the runner will run down and back
twice.
• Once all students in each group are assigned a position (everyone must have a
position) students will line up in order of their position. Jump ropers first, hula-
hoopers second, scooters third, and runners fourth. The games begin.
• With the sound of the whistle the jump ropers are off. Once they reach their 20
allotted jumps the second jump roper will begin (if the class size is not big enough
for a second jump roper continue on to the hula-hooper). Next, the hula-hooper(s)
will make 20 rotations, then the scooter(s), and then the runners.
• The Wacky Olympics continue through the lineup of members. First group to
finish its Olympic positions, win.
• Students will be assesses on their ability work together, follow the rules, and
encourage their teammates. Students should utilize their prior knowledge on jump
roping and hula-hooping.
Visual Representation:
This is the line up of the students and the order they will be in for the Wacky Olympics.
Alter based on the amount of students in the class.

1st contender, the jump roper(s) – 20 jumps each, if two people, they both
must jump differently.

2nd contender, the hula-hooper(s) – 20 rotations each, if two

people, they both must hula-hoop differently.

3rd contender, the scooter(s) – down and back the gym floor, if two
people, they both must use the scooter differently.

4th contender, the runner(s)—down and back the gym floor,

if uneven teams, the runner must run down and back twice.
