Since the start of the 21st century, global economic integration and tourism has led
to rapid growth in the hospitality industry. The next 20 to 30 years is projected to be the
golden era for hospitality industry growth, especially in China. Along with the continued
development of the economy and steady per capita income improvement, by 2020 China will become
the largest traveling and tourism country, and China’s hotel industry will continue to
maintain about 15% growth rate for the next ten years.
With this rapid growth comes increased competition and guest expectations for continuous
improvement of hotel services. Hoteliers therefore need to raise service levels and improve
guest experiences to increase room occupancy rates, while keeping operating costs down and
important tool to help this and improve hotel operating efficiencies. Hoteliers face the

To answer these challenges, Huawei has a cost-effective, easy to deploy and maintain,
secure and green solution that also provides business expansion opportunities. The solution
is based on the full range of star products Huawei has exclusively designed for hoteliers,
including products for voice, broadband, security, wireless, surveillance, and mobile
applications. Huawei’s Smart Hotel solutions can carry voice, data, video, and other hotel
services through one IP based network, not only reducing the network construction and wiring
costs, but also maintaining good avenues for business expansion. The energy-saving design
of the entire network reduces the hotel network energy consumption and helps hoteliers build

The Yunnan Tengchong TENGCHONG TAO Resort and Spa is a five-star villa and spa hotel designed
by one ot the world’s top architects. The resort occupies 640,000 square meters and includes
1,028 luxury villas, a hot springs spa, clubs, shopping centers, recreation areas, and a
celestial observatory. Hotel construction is divided into two phases: in phase one, 428
villas are scheduled for completion by 2013; in phase two, the 600 remaining villas are
The TENGCHONG TAO Resort is a typical resort hotel, with luxury villas, meeting rooms,
recreation centers, restaurants, office and shopping centers, and other functional areas
widely dispersed over a large campus. These areas require multiple network services such
conferencing, video surveillance, IPTV, information dissemination, and other guest services.
Business systems, such as Property Management System (PMS) software, banquet sales,
concierge, dispatch, and other applications must also be widely available for routine hotel
operations, as well as video surveillance and security services for the entire resort.
Basic network designs do not adequately address the demand for high-speed, high-bandwidth
services in resort networks. The hotel has requested assistance with these unique challenges:
How to build a cost-effective network over long distances and widely dispersed areas?
How to deliver a variety of guest and business services without the high cost of traditional
switched networks?
Which networking system can best handle the diverse business requirements of modern
hotels?
The GPON + LSW solution from Huawei implements modern hotel features and services
economically and reliably by integrating multiple networks into a single, core IP network
that serves as the delivery system for all guest services and business applications.
Aware of the need for high-bandwidth services over widely dispersed areas, Huawei was first
to introduce Gigabit Passive Network (GPON) technology as a network solution for the hotel
industry. This solution deploys Fiber To The Home (FTTH) technology, widely deployed in
carrier networks, to alleviate the high costs and power supply problems associated with
networking over long distances. Huawei proposed this solution to optimize voice and data
services, including security surveillance and media streaming, to luxury villas with simple
deployment.
In all other campus areas, Huawei deploys a switched LAN (LSW) network to guarantee reliable
access to data-intensive business information and services. These switches are deployed at
dense access points for secure access to VoIP and other data services.
To meet the requirement for world-class services befitting a modern luxury hotel that are
integrates wired, wireless, telephone, video conference, VOD, and IPTV services into an
All-In-One multi-service network, that can be accessed from different systems on the campus.
The resort uses high-speed optical fiber throughout the hotel and campus areas as the
transmission medium for voice and data services. Because villa areas are regionally dispersed
and provide no obvious aggregation points, Huawei utilizes GPON technology to implement Fiber
To The Home (FTTH) connections with villas. In GPON technology, an Optical Network Terminal
(ONT) device provides access to all available voice and data network services for the villa.
The ONT provides two POTS ports and four GE/FE auto-adapting Ethernet ports to support
high-performance Internet and HD video services. The ONT solution costs 50 percent less in
CAPEX than traditional switched solutions, in terms of equipment expense, consumes little
power (about as much power as a light switch), and does not require a separate power supply
Three-layer switched networking is used for all other hotel areas to handle the diversified,
services, and operations, including surveillance, where reliability and efficiency are
essential. Double-core and double-link networking ensure that the hotel intranet is stable
and reliable. The switch deploys firewall, IPS, NAC, and other safety components to guarantee
network security.
These technologies establish a solid foundation for a modern campus-wide network with the
The most important considerations in wireless networking are access and coverage. For
TENGCHONG TAO, Huawei designed a wireless Access Controller (AC) and thin Access Point (AP)
solution (AC + Fit AP) using a wired and wireless integrated authentication server to ensure
a consistent user experience. The Huawei eSight network management system manages the access
switches, OLT & ONT devices, and core switches, which together form a fully featured,
centralized hotel wireless system for complete WLAN coverage across the campus.
ONT devices provide one-number voice services to villas. In the denser office, shopping,
and spa areas, Integrated Access Device (IAD) equipment is deployed to deliver centralized
telephone services to phones on all floors, rooms, and common areas. These phone services
converge in the core network through the program-controlled switches and access the PSTN
network through Huawei’s U1980 IP PBX, deployed in the network core. This voice solution
enables analog phones to access the PSTN through the IP network — a separate voice network
is not required.
protect guests, resort property, parking areas, and other areas within the resort.
Surveillance cameras deployed in villa areas use GPON technology to transmit HD media streams
for distribution by the IP network. Cameras deployed in all other areas connect to the core
IP network through switches, providing comprehensive video surveillance and security for
The E-Dispatch System is an application system developed by Huawei together with partners
for handling hotel work orders electronically. When guests call the front desk for assistance,
the request is entered into the E-Dispatch system and automatically dispatched to the mobile
phone of the appropriate staff member. For example, for room service requests, the order
is sent to the waiter’s mobile phone through the WLAN network. After the order is delivered,
the waiter reports the new status and the system updates the work order. This system
implements closed-loop management for guest services, improves work efficiency for
productivity gains of up to 30%, and promotes customer satisfaction and customer loyalty.
The TENGCHONG TAO Resort uses Huawei’s Telepresence Conference System to provide remote
‘face-to-face’ meetings for guests. This service, typically used by medium- to large-sized
businesses, stands out as a luxury service for guests and receives high marks from customers.
With the Huawei smart hotel solution, TENGCHONG TAO Resort can build a winning,
cost-effective network for a large campus with widely dispersed, functional areas. To meet
the requirements of a modern luxury hotel, the resort deploys an All-In-One IP core network
and investment expenses. At the same time, by deploying efficient information systems like
one-key customer service and E-Dispatch, the TENGCHONG TAO Resort can offer a new technology
