1.0 INTRODUCTION
This letter report presents the preliminary results of the spudcan penetration analysis performed for
the jack-up rig Sagar Gaurav for final positioning and preloading at location Gulf of Kutch, GK-42-
A, offshore India.
A geotechnical investigation was carried out at intended final position of Sagar Gaurav jack-up rig
for well drilling over Gulf of Kutch location. Drilling was conducted by Fugro Survey Middle East
between Dec 28th and 29th, 2011 from the Deep Sea Fossil jack-up rig.
The investigation comprised one geotechnical borehole with alternating sampling and piezocone
penetration testing (PCPT). The borehole was terminated at 38.5m below sea floor (bsf).
Estimated co-ordinates and seabed elevation of the borehole location are presented below in
Table 1 based on information made available by the client.
Co-ordinates Water

GK-42-A (As-drilled) 446339.30 2473620.74 30.95
Seabed is covered by a layer of very soft clay to 12.5 m bsf and a very soft to soft clay layer
between 12.5m and 19.0m bsf. These layers are followed by a slightly cemented carbonate sand
layer from 19.0 to 19.6 m bsf and a silt layer from 19.6 to 22.0 m bsf. A stiff to very stiff carbonate
clay layer is encountered below 22.0 m bsf, which is intercepted by a carbonate silt layer between
30 and 33 m bsf. A very stiff to hard carbonate clay is observed below 33 m down to 38 m bsf,
which is underlain by the final layer of weak to moderately weak siliceous Calcarenite layer from 38
to 38.5 m (End of borehole - EOB) bsf.
Soil samples were described on the basis of visual inspection and laboratory index tests in the field
and used with information from CPT results to prepare the field borehole log. A small number of
onshore tests may be conducted to confirm soil type, strength, plasticity and carbonate content.
Generalized soil profile is presented in Table 2. A more detailed representation of the soil strata for
the location is provided in the preliminary geotechnical log with soil parameters obtained from
laboratory testing and inferred from CPTs (Plates 1 to 2). CPT results are separately provided in
Plates 3 to 5.

Spudcan configuration and pre-load details for the Sagar Gaurav jack-up rig were provided by the
client and should be confirmed prior to jacking up at the site.
Sagar Gaurav rig is a self-elevating jack-up rig supported by three (3) independent legs with each
leg fitted with a hexagonal shaped spudcan.
The dimensions of the spudcan footing and maximum preload used for calculations presented in
this report are summarized in Table 3.
Design parameter values assigned to various sub-seabed strata for GK-42-A location are
presented on Plate 6.
Leg penetration analysis was carried out using Fugro’s ‘in-house’ software Jurig using these
parameters and the spudcan geometry together with pre-load details summarized above. This
software uses conventional bearing capacity theory. Selection of an appropriate technique is
dictated by the soil strata within the zone of influence. The zone of influence is typically considered
to extend to a depth equivalent to one to two spudcan diameters beneath the widest point of
contact between the spudcan and the soil.
As summarized in Table 4, preliminary predicted leg penetration for Sagar Gaurav jack-up rig at
GK-42-A location is approximately 19.6 m below seabed. This prediction is based on a maximum
preload of 56.4 MN and information provided in Table 3.
Plate 7 presents the graph of ultimate soil resistance (leg load) versus spudcan tip penetration
curve for the Sagar Gaurav jack-up at GK-42-A location.
Preliminary spudcan penetration for Sagar Gaurav jack-up rig for the borehole location at GK-42-A
is expected to be about 19.6 m bsf at pre-load of 56.4MN according to analyses performed using
field geotechnical data. The analysis was performed for a squeezing depth factor of 3 and load
spread factors (h:v) of 1:3 to 1:5.
This assessment is based on a single borehole data and does not take into account lateral
variations. Results (Plate 7) indicate that spudcan legs are expected to go down rapidly to
approximately 1.0 m bsf. No significant bearing capacity is expected within the first 1 meter. From
this depth, penetration rate should decrease upon penetration of maximum cross sectional area of
the spudcan. Penetration of the spudcan is expected to gradually increase from about 1.5 m bsf
with additional loading through the clay layers down to 19 m bsf. It should be noted that variations
of shear strength in clay may affect penetration rate observed within this interval significantly.
Penetration is expected to stop at the sand layer. The expected tip penetration for 56.4 MN preload
for Sagar Gaurav is about 19.6 m bsf at borehole location.
Punch through risk for the jack-up rig Sagar Gaurav’s configuration and soil conditions
encountered at GK-42-A location is assessed to be low. However, it should be noted that
deviations in thicknesses and strengths of sand layer at 19 m bsf and the following silt layer at 19.6
m bsf may cause variations in behavior during leg penetration. It is recommended to monitor leg
penetration carefully when penetration approaches the above mentioned depths of 19 m bsf.
Note that depths may differ due to local seabed undulations or inaccurate measurement.
Measurements of the draught of the hull (or air gap) and water depth are generally only
approximate, and any errors in draught/water depth measurements may contribute to apparent
discrepancies between results of the pre-loading analysis and actual spudcan penetration
measurements.
Possible lateral variability of the soil in the area may also explain discrepancy between predicted
and actual penetration and any variability in observed penetrations as explained above, if any. Leg
penetration behavior assessments have been based on available field data and client supplied rig
information as presented in Table 3. Different (modified) spudcan geometry or leg loads may lead
to results different from the ones presented in this report. This assessment makes no allowance for
spudcan and existing footprint interaction effects, thixotrophy effects or rapid lithological changes
that may be encountered due to lateral variability in site conditions.
