Title of Lesson: Futuristic Sculpture

Teacher: Zoe Nelson

School: PVO

Grade Level[s]: 4/5

Date to be Taught: 4/19/18

Big Idea that drives Lesson/Unit:

We spend our lives surrounded by buildings and spaces, so why should they not be beautiful? Architecture
shapes the way we see, what we see, and how we see it. Exploring architecture of the past can inform our
designs of the future. We will consider how different aspects of design can influence the functions of a
building and the way people move throughout it. We define our favorite spaces to be in by the way they
make us feel, and we will look at how to recreate our favorite spaces and elevate them with design.

Key concepts about Big Idea:

● Imagining the future of design
● Beautifying our world

Fine Arts Goals Met by the Objectives:

● VA:Cn10.1.5a Apply formal and conceptual vocabularies of art and design to view surroundings in new ways through art-

● How can we use our knowledge of past architecture to inform our vision of the future?
● How can we take popular depictions of the future and use them in our design?
● Is future design simplified or more complicated?

Vocabulary Acquisition:

● Pinching: a method of making pottery in which a ball of clay is pressed, pulled, and pinched into a shape with the hand
● Scoring: scratching the surface without puncturing

Key Artistic Concepts:

● 3D design
● Furthering design
● Innovative ideas
● Building with our hands

Artmaking Materials Needed:

● Model magic
● toothpicks

Contemporary/Historical/Multicultural exemplars:
● WALL-E, Meet the Robinsons
Procedures:
● DISCUSSION: (10 minutes)
○ Watch clips from WALLE and Meet the Robinsons - what kinds of buildings do you see? How can you design a
building that fits into a world like this?
○ Your design is important, but so is your idea. Why did you include the things you did? What is your building’s
purpose?
○ Do you think your building will be for Earth? Will we still be on Earth? Underwater?
● DEMONSTRATIONS: (3 minutes)
○ Show students different techniques that help their model magic stand up
● DESIGN/WORK SESSION: ( 20 minutes)
○ Play with model magic for 5 minutes
○ Start building your structure
○ Use a toothpick to add details
● CLEAN UP: (3 minutes)
○ Place your design on a sheet of paper with your name on it
○ Wash your hands if you need to
○ Throw toothpicks away if messy
● CLOSURE: (3 minutes)
○ Why are we designing buildings for the future?
○ Your ideas are original and can help you create innovative design
○ Artists, architects, and designers must constantly think about what the future holds so they can make practical,
innovative art
