Set up Instructions Student PC

Preparation
• Remove dust from inside and out side of all PCs
• Install another stick of RAM

Set up Hardware
• Plug together PC and monitor, Keyboard, Mouse
•hook up power cords
•plug Cat5 cables to Hub

Install PC01 & PC02 OS: Windows XP


 Write down on a piece of paper the Product Key for the OS on the CD
 In BIOS set the first boot device to the CD-ROM and insert the Windows XP Pro CD
 you might have to “Press any key to boot from CD Drive”
 Welcome to Set Up screen: Press Enter to continue and accept the Licensing Agreement
 If you have an operating system on the hard drive, press ESC to install a “Fresh Copy”
 Create one large partition on the hard drive
 (NOTE: Windows will keep some space, usually about 8 MG free for its use)
 Use NTFS file system (do NOT use Quick format)
Formatting the HD could take 30 minutes or more
 After it formats the hard drive it will automatically start installing the Windows XP Pro OS
Go through the Windows Setup Wizard
 Regional and Language Options: ACCEPT DEFAULT Setting, Click NEXT
 Personalize you Software:
 Type in your Name
 Organization: Cisco Class MHS
 Enter the Product Key that came with your Install Disk
 Computer name and Password
 Computer Name: Seat # (whatever seat number you are, i.e. seat1; seat12)
 Administer Password: cisco
 Date and Time
 Set for Eastern Standard Time
Install process take only a few minutes
 Network Setting
 Choose Typical
 Workgroup or Domain
 Choose Workgroup
Install process takes about 20 minutes
Computer will REBOOT automatically
 Click NEXT at the welcome screen
 Connect to the Internet
 Choose Local area network (LAN)
 Setting up a high speed connection
 Obtain IP address automatically
 Obtain DNS automatically
 Ready to register with Microsoft
 NO, not at this time
 Who will use this computer
 Type in your first initial and last name ( i.e. nryan)
 Thank you screen click Finished

This will take about 25 minutes


Install Service Pack 1
• Get the Cd with Service Pack 1
• Create a folder on your desktop names “XP SP1”
• Copy the service pack from the CD to the folder
o Include the hidden file, if prompted
• Install the SP
o In the Update folder, click on Update.exe
o Accept the default settings
o Click finish after the install
o Restart if necessary
• Help protect your PC screen – Automatic Updates
o Choose Not right now

Connect to the Internet


• Plug network Cat5 cable into a hub and confirm you have access to the internet

Install MS Updates
•open Internet Explore
•click on Tools | Windows Update
•Click INSTAL when prompted to in stall Window Update software
•Click Install Now (you screen should then read: “windows update is
downloading......”
•Click on EXPRESS It should now read: “Checking for the latest updates for your
computer”
 Click YES If prompted do you want to continue
After ~ 10-15 minutes….
•Click Download and Install Now
•When finished, click Restart Now
 Repeat the steps for installing updates Some updates must be
installed in a certain order. So the process must be repeated a several times until no
updates are listed.
•In Internet Explore, click on Tools | Windows Update
This update will usually take longer 1hour+
•Click Express and Download and Install
•Install IE 7 if prompted

Install Other programs Save programs to your desk top then install
1. Avast Anti Virus Program: www.avast.com
a. Click on Download | Programs | Home Edition Free Download
b. After install, restart and let it scan your hard drive.
c. You must Register after it scans your hard drive for the first time.
2. Ad ware anti spy ware: www.lavasoftusa.com/
3. OpenOffice suite www.openoffice.org
a. Open OpenOffice Writer and go through the Registration wizard. Do not Register.
4. Firefox www.firefox.com
5. Adobe Acrobat Reader www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
a. DO NOT download the Google toolbar
b. After install, open Adobe Reader and accept the licensing agreement.

6. Winzip: www.winzip.com download an evaluation version.
7. Quick Time Player www.apple.com/quicktime/download/win
8. Adobe Flash player www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer
9. Win Media Player 11
a. Type in Win Media Player in the Google search box and go to the Download
Center
10. Google Video Player (do a search in Google for it)
