Diarrhea is an environmental-based disease and occurs almost in all
geographical regions of the world. There are several factors related to diarrhea, namely mother's knowledge (including understanding, causes, clinical symptoms, prevention, and proper treatment of diarrheal diseases play an important role in decreasing mortality and preventing the incidence of diarrhea and malnutrition), inadequate water supply, water polluted by faeces, lack of hygiene, unhygienic disposal of stools, personal hygiene, sociodemography, poor environment. This study aims to determine the factors associated with diarrhea in toddlers in the work area puskesmas new hope districts loa janan ilir city of Samarinda in 2017. " This research is an analytical survey research using case control research design. Factors associated with this study were the level of knowledge, personal hygiene, basic sanitation and exclusive breastfeeding with samples for cases of 29 and for control of 29, so the total subject of this study was 58 respondents, the sampling technique used was Purposive Sampling . Data were analyzed by using coefficient test of phi and Chi Square with value α = 0.05. The result showed that there was no correlation between the level of knowledge with diarrhea (p = 0,070), the variable of personal hygiene can not be done chi square test, there is no relation between basic sanitation facilities (garbage and SPAL p = 0,795, = 0.785, latrine variables can not be performed chi square test), and there is a relationship between exclusive breast feeding and diarrhea with (p = 0,000). The conclusion of this research is the level of knowledge, personal hygiene and basic sanitation facilities in the work area of puskesmas new hope of sub district loa janan ilir city of Samarinda is not cause of diarrhea, while exclusive breastfeeding cause cause diarrhea in toddler in work area puskesmas hope new district of loa janan ilir city of Samarinda. It is advisable to breastfeeding mothers to be aware of the importance of exclusive breastfeeding for at least 6 months of age which has an effect on the immune system especially on diarrhea.
