FLINT POLICE DEPARTMENT

City of Flint, Michigan

Dr. Karen Weaver Timothy Johnson

Mayor Chief of Police

NEWS RELEASE
On December 5th, 2018 it was brought to the City of Flint Police Department’s attention that a video was
circulating on social media of a Lapeer County Detective expressing extreme derogatory statements
towards Flint Police and the City of Flint.

Chief of Police Timothy Johnson, the administrative staff and the ranking file are deeply offended by the
unprofessional remarks that this law enforcement officer made.

It is obvious that the detective in the video is unaware of the work that our City of Flint Police officers
are doing on a daily basis. The City of Flint Police Department has some of the most dedicated men and
women who proudly serve the great citizens in the City of Flint. It is also obvious that the detective is
unaware of the reduction across the board in violent offenses in our city.

If the detective had properly completed his homework prior to making an unintelligent statement he
would have discovered that the City of Flint is down -10.81% in Part 1 Homicides, -20.81% in Part 1
Violent Crimes, -12.48% in Part 1 Property Crimes and -15.86% in all Part 1 Crimes from 2017.

To aid the detective in becoming more aware and educated in the area of enforcement, it is well known
that these numbers can be found on the City of Flint Police Department’s website on a monthly basis.

In addition, if the detective had properly completed his homework prior to making the imbecilic
statement he would have also discovered that many of the crimes that are committed in the City of Flint
are committed by individuals that do not live or work within the 32 square miles that we proudly serve
and protect. The individuals come from surrounding communities like the one that this detective should
be spending his time protecting, instead of talking about a community that he clearly does not
understand.

Flint Police Administration made contact with the Lapeer County Sheriff and were advised that an
internal investigation will be conducted. We are expecting a very fast but thorough investigation. It is our
hope that proper disciplinary actions will be taken against this detective to clearly show that Lapeer
County Sheriff’s Department does not support this type of conduct.

We are proud of the rich heritage and our opportunity to serve the great citizens of the City of Flint. We
will continue to fulfil our commitment to the resilient citizens in our city.
