(Scene 1)

Girl 1 : Friend, look at this new iPhone XS Max. It has the largest display ever on an iPhone.

Boy 1 : Yes! And I heard that with better water and dust resistance, its structure is integrated with the most

: durable glass ever developed for a smartphone.

Boy 2 : I heard that its Face ID is ten times better than the iPhone released last year. Just by glancing, boom, we

: can securely log in to our phone. No need for some number lockscreen password.

Girl 2 : What are we waiting for? Let’s go switch our phone to this new iPhone.

Girl 1 : Yes, we need a strong waterproof phone since we will go to Boracay next Sunday.

Boy 1 : But, you just recently bought a new iPhone last weekend. So, why should you bother to buy a new one?

Girl 2 : Of course, we should go with the trend or else, we can’t keep up with others. It can also help in making

: our lives easier.

(Everyone agreeing with one another)

Girl 1 : Goodbye iPhone 8, hello iPhone XS!

(Girl 3 looks at them in disappointment)

VO Girl 3 : Just because something new came out, doesn’t mean you have to buy a new item right away.

VO Boy 3 : Especially when you just bought it a week ago.

(Scene 2)

VO Boy 3 : Technology. What is it? What is its essence? To make our lives easier?

: Every time an invention is created to suit mankind’s convenience and need, the old ones tend to be

: thrown or kept away. Like a TV, an aircon, a car, a laptop, a camera, and the list goes on and on and on.

VO Girl 3 : Technology today is as natural to us as it is to breathe. It is found everywhere. We think of technology

: as a means to an end as well as a human activity.

: Sometimes, we don’t think of what these things done for us every day. We even take it for granted. That

: is where the danger comes in.

VO Boy 3 : But, what exactly is technology? What do all technological things have in common?

: Sometimes, we don’t think of what these things done for us every day. We even take it for granted.

(Scene 3)

VO Girl 3 : By reading Martin Heidegger’s The Question Concerning Technology, we can discover what technology

: really is. Simplifying the meaning of his concept, yes, technology is a means to an end. Otherwise known

: as instrumental. It is also a human activity, meaning anthropological. But, this statement is not enough

: for him.

(Scene 4)

VO Boy 3 : In order for us to fully comprehend technology, we need to have a free relationship to it. We should not

: think of technology as an instrument nor tools nor aids. But instead, we must be seeking technology’s

: essence. It is crucial to know that technology is not equivalent to its essence. When we discover

: technology’s essence, we discover the commonality that all technologies share.

(Scene 5)

VO Girl 3 : Suppose now that technology has no meaning anymore to us, how would it stand with the will to master

: it? We would not be able to find its essence if we think conceptually. But rather, we need to approach

: this metaphysically.

VO Boy 3 : Whenever there is an effect, there is a cause. Technology is not instrument. Wherever instrumentality

: reigns, there reigns causality. By Using Heidegger’s knowledge of Aristotle’s metaphysics of causality,

: also known as the four causes.

VO Girl 3 : Let’s take a silver necklace as an example. First, the causa materialis or the matter/material of which it

: is made of – silver. Second, causa formalis or the logos/form structure to which an object is shaped –

: round. Third, causa efficiens or the the process, the source of the change that brings about what is made

: – a jewelry maker. Lastly, causa finalis or the final effect, the reason why it is made – to symbolize

: something as an accessory. And voila, what is revealed? A silver necklace!

VO Boy 3 : Heidegger often refers to the unconcealment. We bring forth from nothing. We think of an idea and

: make it into something tangible. Unconcealment equals to aletheia which means the truth. Thus,

: technology is a mode of revealing. We introduce meaning where there used to be a vague conception.

: But how is technology revealing?

VO Girl 3 : We must think of revealing or bringing forth as poeisis. We must be sensitive and so to speak, poetic to

: what is, what presences are laid out before us. Another word that Heidegger mentions is the word

: techne, which means skills or techniques. Thus, the arts of the mind and fine arts.

VO Boy 3 : When one encompasses both poesis and techne, one can reveal to us. Thus, technology’s essence is that

: it reveals aletheia or truth to us. But, can this concept of causality apply to modern technology?

VO Girl 3 : No, it goes beyond it and it has also changed a pattern, revealing something quite different and radically

: new.
