5.) Standard: 10.0 Students participate in discussions to offer information, clarify ideas, and
support a position.
6.) Objective: 10.3 share ideas, opinions, and information clearly and effectively [NS 10.4.3]
7.) Materials: Air beach ball, bucket, index cards, erasers, and pencils.
8.) Procedure: The first step is to give every student one index card, and make sure they all have a
pencil with eraser. I will provide the index cards for the students, they are on my desk. The class
will have five minutes to write down something that makes them happy and their name on the
bottom. It can be a wide range of things. Once the time is up all the index cards will be collected
and put into the bucket. The next thing to do is to get the students up and move them to an
open area. The students will get in a straight line near the door. The students will be escorted to
an open grass area in the school. The teacher will take the beach ball with them. The students
will be instructed to get into the smallest circle possible. The class will be playing a game that
involves the beach ball and the bucket with the flash cards. The teacher will select the first
student which will begin with the beach ball. That student must draw an index card, and read
the name and thing that makes them happy. The student that’s name was pulled out must
explain why it makes them happy. The rest of the class needs to be actively listening at all times.
Then the card pulled will be removed from the bucket, and the student that had the beach ball
last must pass it to another student. The whole process repeats until there is no more cards in
the buckets.
9.) Assessment: The assessment for the activity will be an embedded assessment. That is meaning
that the students will be assessed without them knowing. At the end of the game, the students
will be instructed to recall as many student’s things that make them happy and why. They will
have to write them down on piece of paper. They will be given ten minutes to do so. Then after
that they will be instructed to write down if they feel any different about their own idea of why
