Lesson Schedule
Targeted teacher language:
Add, subtract, difference, addend

Student language:
Add, subtract, difference
Engage (warm up, review prior knowledge): 5-6 minutes

The ST will review the signs to ensure that all the students can recognize the difference between
addition and subtraction signs.

The student teacher will introduce the lesson by saying “Today we are going to find missing
addends”
She will introduce the words “missing addend” by asking the students to repeat after her. Also, she’ll
explain the meaning of it using addition problem, for example, she will explain that the missing
addend is missing number for example 5+__=9.
She will explain how they can use the subtraction facts to find missing addends or remind them
about the fact families they have practiced on. Also, she will ask them to participate with her
through using the different examples.one of the examples could be such as
4+__=8 and draw domino that shows one square with four dots and the other
one empty square show the missing addend or number which must equal 8.

Core (introduce and practice new concepts & procedures): 35 minutes

The student teacher will ask the students to go to their groups and open page 76 to start working
and solve the problems. While that the student teacher will go around and observe if the students
have misconceptions or need some help.

The students will complete pages 76 - 78 individually depends on their level, but the ST will observe
them and give feedback about their work.

• Approaching Level Guide students through the exercises in On My Own. The ST will help them use
manipulatives while working through the exercises in page 76 and page 77.

• On Level Complete the exercises independently in page 76 and page 77.

• Beyond Level Complete the exercises independently. The ST will tell students to work with a
partner. She will tell one of the students in each pair to use domino to write an addition number
sentence with missing addend. Then, ask their partner to write the related subtraction fact and find
the missing addend. To avoid getting them board if they finish early, the ST will tell students to
switch roles and repeat the activity.
Or she will ask them to complete page 77 and 78 by themselves.

She will remind the students to use the subtraction facts to help them find the missing addend in
the question they struggle with or count how many more they need to get to the total they have.
For example, 7+_=9 so the ST will ask the student how many more do you need to get to 9?
Close (wrap up, discussion, brief review activity or assessment): 5-6 minutes
The ST will ask some additional questions with missing addend and choose some students who are
from different levels to solve it and use subtraction facts they have learned. For example,6+_= 11,
(addition question) 11-6=_ (subtraction fact).
