Personal Target
1.   Choose and describe an aspect from a teaching competency that you need to work on (Goal)

-‐   Implement a good management where the classroom is more students centered.

2.   Describe what you will do to help achieve your goal (Strategies Used)

-‐   Minimize the teacher talk time and make the students work more by themselves.

3.   Describe how you can tell if you’re achieving your goal (Evidence)

-‐   Students will be able to solve and answer questions easily and independently.
Grade: Subject: Learning Outcome (ADEC):

1/6 Mathematics
- Identify the concept of subtraction as a process of
separating things from a group.

1.2.1.1: Use models to represent and solve

subtraction situations.

Strand: Addition and Subtraction

Resources (what materials/equipment will you and Preparation (what do you need to make or check
the students use? Be specific) before class?)

Ø   Introduction materials: -‐   Work on the power point, and go over

the videos.
-‐   White board and markers
-‐   Computer -‐   Send the power point to my MST to go
over it.
-‐   Projector
-‐   Buy the concrete materials (toys) such as
-‐   PowerPoint slides colorful plastic balls and stuffed balls,
-‐   A warm up counting numbers video small plastic animals and toys.

-‐   Video about subtraction -‐   Work on the lesson plan.

plastic animals, and cars make sure the power point and videos
are working and on.
-‐   Colored papers and pens
-‐   Write today’s date and objectives in
Arabic and English.

Ø   Activity 1: Understanding how to subtract

using manipulatives
Ø   Materials:
- Small plastic balls
- Small animals
- Small cars
- Colored papers and pens
Ø   Closing time:
- A challenge question
- I will randomly throw a plastic ball to a student
and ask a question such as: “there were 3 frogs on
a pond, 2 hoped of, how many frogs are left?” This
is a way too assess the students.
- Thumbs up and down assessment

Language & Subtraction (takeaway)

Key vocabulary
Questions using Remembering level:
Bloom’s Taxonomy
levels Ask the students questions related to the previous lesson which was about addition.
And also, asking the students a question such as: “when we put things together
we….? (add) and when we take something away we call it (subtract).

Understanding level:

Explaining to the students and discussing with them about subtraction, using
sentences and numbers.

Applying level:

I will make the students play the chair game which will help the students understand
more about subtraction.

Analyzing level:

Showing the students how to subtract numbers.

Evaluating level:

Ask the students questions related to the question.

Creating level:

Students will be given manipulatives (toys) to use them as a way of subtraction.

Introduction (warmer activity + teacher introduction/demonstration of small group activities)

-‐   Greet the students.

-‐   Ask the student about today’s date and read the learning objectives.

-‐   As a warm up, I will switch on a counting numbers video for the kids to follow up.

-‐   Choose a team leader for each group.

-‐   Go through a revision question about addition, “Jamal has 5 mangoes, his friend gave
him 3 more mangoes, how much are the mangoes in total?”

-‐   Students will then watch a video about subtraction as an introduction. The video talks
about stories that include subtraction such as “4 birds in a cage, 2 birds flew away, I
wonder how many birds are left?” “When I was in the park, I had 5 balloons, but 2
balloons popped, how much are left?” “There was a hungry monkey, he had 4 bananas,
he began to eat them one at a time, until he ate bananas, how much are left?”

-‐   Recap today’s learning objective.

25 min

-‐   Tell the students that today they will learn a new vocabulary which is subtraction.

-‐   Then, tell the students that it is time for the chair game, I will first ask them if they
know what is the game about and how to play it, then, ask the quite students with raised

-‐   I will put 6 chairs, and pick 5 students, I will start the game and song, and once the song
stops, students must sit on the chair. However, one student will not have an available
seat, so, I will ask the students “how many students must sit now?” They will have to
say 5, then, “how many students are out? They will have to say 1, after “how many
chairs will be taken out next round?” they will have to say 1, “so, how many chairs are
left?” the answer is 4. This chair game will help the students to understand more about
the concept of taking out (subtraction.)

-‐   The students and I will have a discussion about the game.

-‐   Students will then start the activities as a group.

Independent Experience (small group activity 1):

- I will put a basket in each group, each group will have different shape of concrete materials, one
group will have a plastic colorful balls, the other will have a stuffed ball, the other will have plastic
small toys, the fourth group will have plastic small animals. And also, they will have a colorful
paper and pens.
10 min

- For example, if a group had the card number 5 and 6 balls on the table, they will have to take 5
balls away which then one ball will be the answer 1, and on the paper they have to draw 6 circles
and cross out 5 and write number 1. And it goes on for the other groups.
Whole

Time:

- Whenever a group finishes they will rotate to another group to explore more.

I will ask the students to put everything away and clean up and sit properly, then, I will randomly -

pond, 2 hoped of, how many frogs are left?” This is a way too assess the students.

After that, tell them that there is a challenge question which is “Nora has 9 apples in the
refrigerator, she bought 6 more, how many apples in total does she have?”

And whoever answers the question will get a stick as to put in in the reward chart.
