Behavior Problems: Some students can get easily distracted with technology such as
their cellphones. If I see any phones out on the tables before my lesson starts, I will
ask all students to put their phones away before I begin.

WRITTEN AS MEASURABLE OBJECTIVES.
Today the students will be able to:
-Identify a few of the strategies and approaches schools use to support children with
disabilities
-Describe the steps of identifying students with disabilities
-Demonstrate they know that IEPs must be very detailed by editing vague IEP goals
to be specific and measurable objective goals.
-Construct an accommodated lesson plan for students with various disabilities

How will you link the new materials to prior learning?

-I will connect my topic to my abstract topic on the teacher shortage that I did earlier
in the year by explaining how one of the impacts of the increased population is how
it is affecting the teacher shortage.
-Our class also had a guest speaker from the special education department come in
and speak about intervention and support, and my lesson will definitely connect to
some of the ideas she discussed with us.
Process of Learning What will students do?
-I will begin my lesson by leading with a discussion question to get the students
engaged and interested
-After the short discussion, the students will listen to my powerpoint as I present on
the progress of special education over the years and what some of the newer
approaches are that we as a nation and school districts are using for identification
and special education services, such as RTI.
-After I briefly describe the laws and new approaches our nation is using, I will
transition into the three tiers of RTI and the identification process of special
education students.
-Before I explain the ten steps of identification, I will lead the class in a short activity
of organizing the 10 steps of identification to see how much they already know about
the identification process. Understanding the identification process is important to
further understand why the population is increasing so I think this is important to go
over with the students.
-The activity will involve one or two students getting out of their desks and going
over to the whiteboard. I will have printed off the ten steps of the identification
process onto individual sheets of paper and with magnets, the two students who
volunteered to go up will serve as advocates for the class to organize the ten steps in
order and place them on the whiteboard. This will be a whole class activity but only
two students will be working at the whiteboard together so it is not too crowded at
the board. All of the students will give their input on where they think the individual
steps should go.
-After the students have finalized their answers, everyone will sit back at their desks
and I will then display the correct answers on my powerpoint for the class to see.
-Next, I will briefly discuss the importance of IEPs and explain how they must be very
detailed and specific.
-I will then explain my second activity involving editing a student’s IEP. I will have
printed out a worksheet for everyone to complete and they will work on this
worksheet with the one or two other people sitting at their tables.
-Once everyone has completed the worksheet, I will go back to my powerpoint and I
will display a variety of the statistics proving how the special education population
has indeed been increasing steadily over the years.
-I will then transition from talking about why more students are being identified to
how this is impacting other factors of education. I will explain how the increased
population is impacting the teacher shortage because more and more students are
needing individual attention, but there are simply not enough teachers for all of the
students. I will also explain how an impact of the increased population is that more
students with disabilities are put into regular education classrooms and how this
affects the teacher and the other students in the classroom as well.
-I will then pause my presentation and ask the class the following questions
“How would more special education students (whether it’s students with a learning
disability or something as serious as down syndrome or autism) affect the other
students in the classroom?”
“And how would it affect the teacher in the classroom?”
-The students will participate in a short discussion about these two questions.
-After discussing as a class, I will put a few sample answers to the question and
display them on my keynote.
-The last part of my lesson will be one final activity for the students to do. This
activity will connect to the impact of the increased special education population
because it will be about the inclusion of students with disabilities in regular
education classrooms. This activity will be another worksheet I created. The
worksheet will help the students practice adapting a simple elementary lesson for
children with disabilities in the classroom. I will pass out this worksheet to everyone
and they will complete it at their desks and they can discuss with the 1-2 other
students at their desk if they want to do so.
 -After they complete it, we will go over some ideas to the answers together, since
there is not one right answer to the question. I will project the example answers on
my powerpoint.
-Finally, I will wrap up my lesson by explaining the significance of this topic in
education right now. I will then explain the homework assignment for the students to
complete that night.

Post assessment How will you know if students understand the content objectives?
-I will collect their IEP worksheets that they filled out in class. I will look over these
worksheets and review their answers to see how well they understood the
importance of being detailed while writing an IEP. I will also listen carefully to the
students’ answers during discussion questions to see how well they are
understanding the key points of my lesson. I will also walk around while they are
filling out the second worksheet of adapting a lesson plan. I will look at their answers
as they are filling these out to make sure they know what to do.

When will assessment occur?

Assessment will occur through the form of my homework assignment. My homework
assignment will be two discussion questions to answer on Padlet. They will need to
go online and answer these questions the night of my lesson and I will then grade
their responses to the Padlet questions.

How will you summarize and check for understanding?

I will summarize at the end by explaining why it is important to know and understand
why the student population of special needs students is increasing, and how it is
important for future teachers to know the impact of this. I will check for
understanding by reviewing their worksheets, listening to their responses during
discussion questions, and reading and grading their homework.

-The overheard screen to present my presentation to the class
-I will print out copies to both of my worksheets
-I will also have printed out the ten steps of the identification process in a large
font and cut out each step. The students will then use magnets to organize the steps
in order on the whiteboard.
Organization:
-The room will be organized by separating each individual table so there is a total
of 6 tables (3 x 2). At least two people will need to sit at each table so they can work
on group work together.
