Lesson Plan

Student: Saralee Martelly Professor

Course: EDU 5230 Date: December 6th, 2018
Grade: Kindergarten Topic: Counting and Cardinality
Content Area: Mathematics

INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVE

After reading the book “The Grouchy lady bug”, student will watch a YouTube video
about ordinal numbers, students will discuss the similarities between ordinal numbers
and counting numbers and complete a worksheet, test their knowledge by playing a
SMART notebook and Plickers game and take a Kahoot quiz on identifying ordinal
numbers correctly naming 9 out of 10 ordinal numbers.

STANDARDS AND INDICATORS

NY-K.CC.4d Understand the concept of ordinal numbers (first through tenth) to
describe the relative position and magnitude of whole numbers.
Indicator: This will be evident when students complete a worksheet showing the
position of an object or a number of objects in a row.

KR2: Retell stories or share key details from a text.

Indicator: This will be evident when students do a turn and talk and retell the story
and explain what happened first, next and last.

Empowered Learners -Students leverage technology to take an active role in choosing,

achieving and demonstrating competency in their learning goals, informed by the
learning sciences.

a. 1c. Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves
their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.

Indocator: This will be evident when students take the Kahoot quiz individually on
their devices.

Knowledge Constructor- Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital
tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts and make meaningful learning
experiences for themselves and others.

a. 3c. Students curate information from digital resources using a variety of

tools and methods to create collections of artifacts that
demonstrate meaningful connections or conclusions.

Indicator: This will be evident when students take turns and complete the Plickers
game.

Computational Thinker- Students develop and employ strategies for understanding and
solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop
and test solutions.

a. 5c. Students break problems into component parts, extract key

information, and develop descriptive models to understand complex
systems or facilitate problem-solving.

Indicator: This will be evident when students play the SMART notebook game on
the SMART board.

INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES
Chrome books, iPad, Worksheet, Google slides, crayons/pencils, interactive
whiteboard, SMARTnotebook and Kahoot.

MOTIVATION

The teacher will read the book “The Grouchy Lady Bug” by Eric Carle and then ask the
students to recall what happened first, next and last in the story. Students will use their
knowledge of ordinals numbers to retell the story in the right order of events. Students
will watch a YouTube video about ordinal numbers and talk about the similarities and
differences between ordinal and cardinal numbers.

DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES
Students will be partnered up and retell the story by correctly identifying what happens
first, next and last in the story. The teacher will review with the whole class the right
sequencing of events. After watching the YouTube video, children will play a Plickers
game to demonstrate their understanding of ordinal numbers.

INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES (Learning Strategies*)

 Cooperative Learning
o Indicator: This will be evident when students work in groups to
complete the ordinal numbers activity.
 Turn and Talk
o Indicator: This will be evident when students talk with a neighbor
after the read aloud about what happened first, next, and last in the
story.
 Direct Instructions
o Indicator: This will be evident when the teacher goes through the
google slide presentation explaining the difference and connection
between ordinal and cardinal numbers.

ADAPTATIONS (Exceptionality*)

 Students with a hearing impediment will be provided with headphones and the
book “The Grouchy lady bug” on their iPad to listen individually with teacher aid
as she points to every word as they hear it while the class listen to the teachers
read aloud.
 Students with visual impairment will be provided cue cards at their tables and use
a text to speech feature on an iPad.

DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION
Students will use their Ipads to play Kahoot game.
Struggling Students
Students may be able to identify the discrete object in the line and therefore determine
their ordinal position, however, they may not recognize the direction they are facing.
The teacher will clearly explain the direction that they are facing (if all the objects are
facing to the right or to the left). The teacher will pair them with other students who can
clearly recognize the direction they are facing.

Average Students
Will be partnered with a struggling or advanced student to play the game based on their
knowledge of the material.

Advanced Students

Students will be paired with a struggling student for the activity, so they can teach the
struggling students.

ASSESSMENT (artifacts* and assessment [formal & informal]*)

As a formative assessment, students will complete a worksheet. ..\Documents\ordinal

numbers worksheet.docx, demonstrating their understanding of ordinal numbers.

INDEPENDENT PRACTICE
Studenst will play a game about ordinal numbers on Turtlediary.com
(https://www.turtlediary.com/game/ordinal-numbers.html) and test their knowledge on
the material.

FOLLOW-UP ACTIVITIES: DIRECT TEACHER INTERVENTION AND ACADEMIC

ENRICHMENT

Direct Teacher Intervention

For the students who are struggling with the topic, the teacher will them complete the
game on SMARTnotebook.
Academic Enrichment
Students who understand the topic will be asked to create their own ordinal number
game on SMARTnotebook and play it in the classroom as a group.
