There are many regulative principles in the sastras and directions given by
the spiritual master. These regulative principles should act as servants of the
basic principle-that is, one should always remember Krsna and never forget
Him. This is possible when one chants the Hare Krsna mantra. Therefore one
must strictly chant the Hare Krsna maha-mantra twenty-four hours daily. One
may have other duties to perform under the direction of the spiritual master,
but he must first abide by the spiritual master's order to chant a certain
number of rounds. In our Krsna consciousness movement, we have
recommended that the neophyte chant at least sixteen rounds. This chanting
of sixteen rounds is absolutely necessary if one wants to remember Krsna
and not forget Him. Of all the regulative principles, the spiritual master's
order to chant at least sixteen rounds is most essential.

For the present you should continue going to school because education is
important. Without education nobody has any social position and all our
students in Krishna Consciousness are expected to be preachers. So
preachers must have sufficient education because they have to meet with so
many opposing elements. Education should be continued at the same time
chanting should be continued. There will be no difficulty.

If a man thinks that chanting will save him from all kinds of sinful reaction
deliberately committed by him, then he becomes the greatest offender. By
chanting Hare Krishna certainly we become free from all sinful reactions, but
that does not mean that we shall deliberately commit sins and counteract it
by chanting.

Krishna Consciousness is so nice that if one takes part in it in either ways, like
hearing, chanting, remembering, worshiping, praying, or even simply by
eating prasadam, the transcendental effect will be visible.

for his progressive march’.

I am so glad to learn that you are now getting the fruit of chanting Hare

Difficulties of life may come as seasonal changes but we should not be

disturbed by all those difficulties. Our process is to chant and that process will

There are many who like to chant the Hare Kåñëa mantra in a silent, solitary
place, but if one is not interested in preaching, talking constantly to the
nondevotees, the influence of the modes of nature is very difficult to
surpass. Therefore unless one is extremely advanced in Kåñëa
consciousness, one should not imitate Haridäsa Öhäkura, who had no other
business than chanting the holy name always, twenty-four hours a day.

The Lord is always glorious, whether the devotee glorifies Him or not, but if
the devotee engages in glorifying the Lord, the devotee himself automatically
becomes glorious. By glorifying the Lord constantly, the living entity becomes
purified in the core of his heart.

Simply by chanting the holy name of the Lord, one advances perfectly in
spiritual life. This is the best process for success in life. In other ages, the
chanting of the holy name is equally powerful, but especially in this age, Kali-
yuga, it is most powerful.

It is recommended that even if one commits offenses, one should continue

chanting the holy name. In other words, the chanting of the holy name makes
one offenseless.

The holy name is so spiritually potent that simply by chanting the holy name
one can be freed from the reactions to all sinful activities. What, then, is to be
said of those who chant the holy name regularly or worship the Deity
regularly? For such purified devotees, freedom from sinful reaction is
certainly assured.

If one extracts the poison fangs of a serpent, this saves the serpent's future
victims from poisonous effects, even if the serpent bites repeatedly. Similarly,
if a devotee chants the holy name even once inoffensively, this protects him
eternally.

and monkeys in Vrindavana.

Just like you are trying to spread Kåñëa consciousness with so much
endeavor. It’s not that cent percent people of the world will take. That is not
possible. Only the fortunate persons will be able to take it. So we should not
be disappointed that “Majority of people, do not take this. What is the use of?
Let me sit down in Våndävana and chant Hare Kåñëa mantra.” No. Caitanya
Mahäprabhu, never sat down tightly in Våndävana. He traveled all over the
India and took so much trouble. So preaching is very important, and you
should engage. That will help you.

Any endeavor for pushing on Kåñëa’s glories, that is also as good as chanting
the holy name. When you go out for canvassing, for pushing on this
movement, people may not see that you are not chanting and dancing.
Suppose you are canvassing for a life member. That topic is also as good as
chanting Hare Kåñëa mantra. One’s life must be dedicated simply for Kåñëa’s
service.

If one who is embarrassed by hunger or who falls down or stumbles chants

the holy name of the Lord even once, willingly or unwillingly, he is
immediately freed from the reactions of his past deeds. Karmés entangled in
material activities face many difficulties in the practice of mystic yoga and
other endeavors to achieve that same freedom.

There are three stages in chanting the holy name of the Lord. In the first
stage, one commits ten kinds of offenses while chanting. In the next stage,
nämäbhäsa, the offenses have almost stopped, and one is coming to the
platform of pure chanting. In the third stage, when one chants the Hare
Kåñëa mantra without offenses, his dormant love for Kåñëa immediately
awakens. This is the perfection.

Çukadeva Gosvämé continued: My dear King, the chanting of the holy name
of the Lord is able to uproot even the reactions of the greatest sins. Therefore
the chanting of the saìkértana movement is the most auspicious activity in
the entire universe. Please try to understand this so that others will take it
seriously.

One should be very careful to be free from all sins and never think of
counteracting sinful activities by chanting the Hare Kåñëa mantra, for this is
another offense. If by chance a devotee accidentally performs some sinful
activity, the Lord will excuse him, but one should not intentionally perform
sinful acts.

One is easily relieved from all sinful reactions by chanting the holy name of
the Lord and chanting of His qualities and activities. This is the only process
recommended for relief from sinful reactions. Even if one chants the holy
name of the Lord with improper pronunciation, he will achieve relief from
material bondage if he chants without offenses. Ajämila, for example, was
extremely sinful, but while dying he merely chanted the holy name, and
although calling his son, he achieved complete liberation because he
remembered the name of Näräyaëa.

"If one always chants the holy name of the Lord with great devotion in the
evening and in the morning, one can become free from all material miseries."

Those engaged in broadcasting the holy name of Näräyaëa, Kåñëa, through

the Kåñëa consciousness movement should always consider what our
position was before we came and what it is now. We had fallen into
abominable lives as meat-eaters, drunkards and woman hunters who
performed all kinds of sinful activities, but now we have been given the
opportunity to chant the Hare Kåñëa mantra. Therefore we should always
appreciate this opportunity.

By the grace of the Lord we are opening many branches, and we should use
this good fortune to chant the holy name of the Lord and serve the Supreme
Personality of Godhead directly. We must be conscious of the difference
between our present and past conditions and should always be very careful
not to fall from the most exalted life.

One who chants the holy name of the Lord is immediately freed from the
reactions of unlimited sins, even if he chants indirectly [to indicate something
else], jokingly, for musical entertainment, or even neglectfully. This is
accepted by all the learned scholars of the scriptures.

If one chants the holy name of Hari and then dies because of an accidental
misfortune, such as falling from the top of a house, slipping and suffering
broken bones while traveling on the road, being bitten by a serpent, being
afflicted with pain and high fever, or being injured by a weapon, one is
immediately absolved from having to enter hellish life, even though he is
sinful.

As a fire burns dry grass to ashes, so the holy name of the Lord, whether
chanted knowingly or unknowingly, burns to ashes, without fail, all the
reactions of one's sinful activities.

If a person unaware of the effective potency of a certain medicine takes that

medicine or is forced to take it, it will act even without his knowledge
because its potency does not depend on the patient's understanding.
Similarly, even though one does not know the value of chanting the holy
name of the Lord, if one chants knowingly or unknowingly, the chanting will
be very effective.

The chanting of the holy name of Lord Viñëu is the best process of atonement
for a thief of gold or other valuables, for a drunkard, for one who betrays a
friend or relative, for one who kills a brähmaëa, or for one who indulges in
sex with the wife of his guru or another superior. It is also the best method of
atonement for one who murders women, the king or his father, for one who
slaughters cows, and for all other sinful men. Simply by chanting the holy
name of Lord Viñëu, such sinful persons may attract the attention of the
Supreme Lord, who therefore considers, "Because this man has chanted My
holy name, My duty is to give him protection." (SB 6.2.9-10)
Chanting the holy name of the Lord even once not only frees one
immediately from the reactions of the greatest sins, but also raises one to the
platform of rendering loving service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead
(SB 6.2.11)
What cannot be achieved through the performance of Vedic rituals can be

easily achieved through the chanting of the Lord's holy name.

If one chants the holy name of the Lord, even in a helpless condition or
without desiring to do so, all the reactions of his sinful life depart, just as
when a lion roars, all the small animals flee in fear." (Garuda Purana)

Illicit sex is strictly prohibited. One should be satisfied with his married wife,
for even a slight deviation will create havoc. A Kåñëa conscious gåhastha
should always remember this. He should always be satisfied with one wife
and be peaceful simply by chanting the Hare Kåñëa mantra. Otherwise at any
moment he may fall down from his good position, as exemplified in the case
of Ajämila.

Devotional service, which begins with chanting of the holy name of the Lord,
is so powerful that even if one falls down from the exalted position of a
brähmaëa through sexual indulgence, he can be saved from all calamities if
he somehow or other chants the holy name of the Lord. This is the
extraordinary power of the Lord's holy name.

In Bhagavad-gétä it is advised that one not forget the chanting of the holy
name even for a moment (satataà kértayanto mäà yatantaç ca dåòha-vratäù
[Bg. 9.14]). There are so many dangers in this material world that one may
fall down from an exalted position at any time. Yet if one keeps himself
always pure and steady by chanting the Hare Kåñëa mahä-mantra, he will be
safe without a doubt.

On the mirror if there is dust, you cannot see your face very nicely. If you
wipe the mirror very nicely… So this Hare Krishna chanting is the process of
wiping out the dust accumulated on the mirror of my mind.

If we stick to the principle of chanting the Hare Kåñëa mahä-mantra

offenselessly, then, by the grace of Çréla Haridäsa Öhäkura, we may be saved
from the allurement of women. However, if we are not very strict in chanting
the Hare Kåñëa mahä-mantra, we may at any time fall victim to women.

The holy name is so powerful; that even by chanting with offense, gradually
he becomes pure. Therefore we should not give up chanting. Any
circumstances, we should go on chanting Hare Krishna.

Brahmänanda: I think sometimes we recommend the devotees to chant their

rounds in the temple rather than walk in other places.
Prabhupäda: Why one should walk other places? Who has said that you go
out, walk other places? Never said.
Devotee (7): It may not really be necessary.
Prabhupäda: No. You should chant in the temple. Why should you go to other
place? Who has allowed him to go outside? Unless he has got some important
business for the temple, why one should go to outside? There is no need.
That is the chance of falling down.
Prabhupäda: And this night I have explained, chanting outside the temple and
chanting in the temple, it increases the value thousand times.
Puñöa Kåñëa: Chanting in the temple increases the?
Prabhupäda: Value. Potency, thousand times. Otherwise, why they are going
to the Våndävana?

Hearing the vibration of Hare Krishna automatically reminds one of Krishna’s

pastimes. Both of them arise simultaneously in the mind when one is
sincerely chanting. You cannot make any distinction between listening to the
sound and thinking of the pastimes. But the process is to hear, and then
Krishna’s pastimes, form, qualities, etc., will automatically come to mind:

long as I can always chant Hare Krishna.

Please follow this principle and you will never be disturbed in any frightened

Chant Hare Kåñëa mantra - at least sixteen rounds, and follow the regulative
principle, and pray to Kåñëa to help you. Everything will be all right.
You are not Haridäsa Öhäkura that you'll be able to chant whole day and
night. That you cannot do. Chant minimum quantity, sixteen rounds, and that
will take not more than two hours. And other twenty-two hours, you be
always busy in Kåñëa's activities. That is required.

Observe these four regulative principles and chant Hare Kåñëa mantra as far
as possible, at least sixteen rounds. Then see how your life changes.

You can chant more than sixteen-sixteen hundred times. But practically we
see that even chanting sixteen rounds becomes difficult. So don't try to
imitate, but do it properly, what is advised by your spiritual master, without
any offense. That mantra will save you from the dangers of mäyä. That's a
fact.

So anyone who will stop chanting, he will be a victim of mäyä. Always

remember it. Therefore we insist, "Please do not forget to chant at least
sixteen rounds. That is minimum."

The maximum is 300,000 as Haridäsa Öhäkura used to do. But we cannot do

that. Even we cannot complete sixteen rounds. We are so unfortunate. But
that does not mean because we are unfortunate, we shall give it up. Try, try,
try your best. Then life will become perfect.

So at least sixteen rounds. Don't miss this. Don't miss this. What is the
difficulty, sixteen rounds? At most it will take two hours. You have got twenty-
four hours.

The spiritual master has given you so many things to do. Do it. First of all
finish sixteen rounds, observe the regulative principles. First of all finish this
duty. If you cannot finish sixteen rounds chanting, you cannot observe the
regulative principles, then what else you can do? First of all finish this duty.
Be expert in finishing this duty. Then ask for another duty. And if you finish
this duty, automatically Kåñëa will give you intelligence.

11.We cannot deviate from the path of the previous äcäryas. We must strictly
follow. Therefore I repeatedly say to my students that "You chant Hare Kåñëa
mantra sixteen rounds, and follow the regulative principles. Your strength is
there." Just like Himalayan mountain, nobody can push it. It is so powerful.
This is Caitanya Mahäprabhu's request. Don't deviate from the instruction.
Then you will stand as strong as the Himalayan mountain. Very simple thing.
Anyone can do.

Whenever you feel some difficulty, chant Hare Krishna. Pray to Krishna to
help you, and there will be no difficulty.
It is understood that everyone has some nasty habits, but by sticking to

Krishna Consciousness, chanting our required rounds loudly, and tending the
deities, these items will surely save you. So always be seriously engaged in
serving Krishna and pray to Krishna to help you with your frailties.

Materialistic people take everything for sense gratification and Krishna

Conscious people take everything for Krishna's satisfaction. There is no fault
in the thing as it is; namely women and money, but it becomes faulty by
improper use. The improper use is to accept them for sense gratification. As it
is stated in Bhagavad-gita, we can remain very strong from this by taking a
firm shelter under the Lotus Feet of Krishna, by chanting His Holy Name
incessantly, and praying always for being engaged in His service. In this way
He will protect us from our weakness.

Madhudviña: Is there a way, is there a specific way to counteract this bad

quality of enviousness?
Prabhupäda: And yes, just chant Hare Kåñëa. Cleanse your mind. All dirty
things will go. Because you neglect to chant regularly, therefore the dirty

But even if there may be some problems, always try to remain in Krishna
Consciousness. Do not give up chanting the Hare Krishna mantra simply due
to some external difficulties. Under all circumstance you should always chant
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare Hare Rama Hare Rama
Rama Rama Hare Hare. This will protect you from all danger of being
influenced by Maya or the material energy.
The fact that you have left our movement just on account of some minor
disagreements shows that you are not actually serious about going back to
home, back to Godhead. I suggest that you become serious about spiritual
life and try to overlook the minor offences of others. You should keep yourself
in the association of devotees, chant at least 16 rounds, read my books and
follow all of the rules and regulations very strictly.

the holy name of Näräyaëa at the time of death. He must have prior practice
in order to chant effectively. Therefore Caitanya Mahäprabhu has
recommended, kértanéyaù sadä hariù: [Cc. adi 17.31] “One should chant the
holy name of the Lord constantly.”

The chanting of Kåñëa’s holy name is like the sun rising in one’s darkened
heart. This universe is full of darkness, and only by Kåñëa’s arrangement for
sunshine do we see light. As soon as the sun sets, the world comes under the
influence of darkness. Likewise, our heart is full of the darkness of ignorance,
but there is a light to dispel the darkness, and that light is Kåñëa
consciousness.
One who practices chanting the Hare Kåñëa mantra is naturally expected to
chant Hare Kåñëa when he meets with some accident. Even without such
practice, however, if one somehow or other chants the holy name of the Lord
when he meets with an accident and dies, he will be saved from hellish life
after death.
If a person falls from a high rooftop but somehow or other cries out “Hare
Kåñëa!” that cry will be heard by the Lord. Or, if in our sleep we dream that a
tiger is coming to eat us and we chant Hare Kåñëa in our sleep, the Lord
hears that also.
I am so glad to learn that you are now getting the fruit of chanting Hare

Is chanting this Hare Kåñëa mahä-mantra, very difficult for you? God has
given you tongue. We are talking so many things, whole day and night. But if
we utilize this tongue for chanting Hare Kåñëa mantra, what is the loss?

“When one becomes Krishna conscious, he loves everyone. If you chant

loudly Hare Krishna, even the ants and insects who are hearing, will be
delivered, because it is spiritual vibration.”

Everyone should be given a chance to take prasädam and thus be induced to

chant the holy names Hare Kåñëa and also dance in ecstasy. By these three
processes, although performed without knowledge or education, even an
animal went back to Godhead.

Not only was Raghunätha däsa Gosvämé chanting a fixed number of rounds,
but he had also taken a vow to bow down many times and offer obeisances to
the Lord.

The seed of devotion cannot sprout unless watered by the process of hearing
and chanting. One should submissively receive the transcendental messages
from spiritually advanced sources and chant the very same messages for
one’s own benefit as well as the benefit of one’s audience.

The chanting of the Hare Kåñëa mantra is recommended even for persons
who commit offenses, because if they continue chanting they will gradually
chant offenselessly. By chanting the Hare Kåñëa mantra without offenses, one
increases his love for Kåñëa. As stated by Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu, premä
pum-artho mahän: one’s main concern should be to increase one’s
attachment to the Supreme Personality of Godhead and to increase one’s love
for Him.

One can cultivate Kåñëa consciousness anywhere and everywhere, provided

he can always think of Kåñëa. The mahä-mantra, Hare Kåñëa, Hare Kåñëa,
Kåñëa Kåñëa, Hare Hare/ Hare Räma, Hare Räma, Räma Räma, Hare Hare,
can be chanted even within the abdomen of one’s mother. One can chant
while sleeping, while working, while imprisoned in the womb or while outside.
This Kåñëa consciousness cannot be checked in any circumstance.

We are trapped souls in a state of forgetfulness of Krishna, and Krishna is

giving you the chance now to re-establish your relationship with Him by this
chanting process. So take full advantage of it and be happy.

depending merely upon contemplative prowess. It is a devotional art, a form
of prayer, and thus one must chant with reverence and devotion

I can understand your concern about the deterioration of the civilization. Yes,
the city will be more dangerous place as Kali-yuga advances. It will be very
deteriorating. The modern civilization is so corrupt and as sinful activities are
more and more committed, the people will be forced to face more troubles,
by nature's order. Our business, however, is simply to take shelter of the Hare
Krsna Maha Mantra and pray to the Holy Name to give us protection. We shall
be unaffected by all that will happen. Krsna will provide us with working
facilities. Be assured of this, that the devotees will be protected by the Holy
Name. Others will have to suffer in the days that are coming.

Your ambition for chanting Hare Krishna exclusively is very good. But
sacrificing the results of action is as good. A concrete example is Arjuna. He
fought very chivalrously under the instructions of the Lord, and the Lord
certified him to be the best devotee and friend of the Lord. So there is no
distinction between chanting and offering the results of one's activity.

therefore regularly take advantage of both the bhägavata process and

sword is only remedy.

will be most effective. Similarly, the chanting will have the most effect if you
can abide by the principles of purified living.
It is your great fortune to be chanting Hare Krishna Mantra. This is the special
purpose of human life. In the other forms of life like the animals, this
opportunity is not available. So make your life perfect by becoming Krishna
Conscious.
Chanting of the Hare Krishna mantra is the direct process for curing the mind
of all materialistic contamination. Take to this process and be happy.

manifestation of the Lord's Supreme Mercy. Anyway, such feelings come and
go like seasonal changes and we should not deviate for that reason from our

By the mercy of Lord Caitanya even materially absorbed persons can be

extricated from their entanglement in the maya by contact with offenseless

Under the pressure of illusory energy, especially in the age of ``Kali,'' all the

Someone may argue, “I can see how chanting the holy name with faith is

are some examples: If an innocent child touches fire, knowingly or

Poison also acts in this way. Similarly, the Hare Kåñëa mantra acts, even
though we may not know how or why. Even ignorant lower creatures are

but is within the body. This consciousness can be possible only if one chants

spiritual life if we are engaged in some service to Krsna which is

Caitanya Mahaprabhu chanted, Haridasa Thakura chanted 24 hours, all the
Goswamis and Acaryas chanted, my Guru Maharaja chanted, and following all
these footsteps we are also chanting. So they are authorized by disciplic
succession, and all of us must chant at least 16 rounds daily to keep us fit on
the Krishna Consciousness transcendental platform.

If Kåñëa consciousness is covered by material sins, one can eliminate the sins
simply by chanting the Hare Kåñëa mantra, but if one pollutes his Kåñëa

until one properly atones for the sin by pleasing the offended Vaiñëava or
brähmaëa. This was the course that Durväsä Muni had to follow, for he
surrendered unto Mahäräja Ambaréña. A vaiñëava-aparädha cannot be
atoned for by any means other than by begging the pardon of the offended
Vaiñëava.

From your letter it appears that you are a little confused. This means that the
consciousness is not clear. The clear stage of consciousness is free from
hankering and lamentation. As long as we are on the material platform, bodily
conception of life we will hanker for so many things. Therefore to clear this
cloudy consciousness Caitanya Mahaprabhu recommended that one should
simply chant the Holy name of God sincerely and hear it with attention.
Chant, dance, take prasadam and be happy. Marriage is not recommended.
Are you prepared to get a job, live outside the temple in apartment, provide
the wife with bangles saris and sex? Better you concentrate on this chanting
and hearing process.

There is no fault in the thing as it is; namely women and money, but it
becomes faulty by improper use. The improper use is to accept them for
sense gratification. As it is stated in Bhagavad-gita, we can remain very
strong from this by taking a firm shelter under the Lotus Feet of Krishna, by
chanting His Holy Name incessantly, and praying always for being engaged in
His service. In this way He will protect us from our weakness.

So we must stick firmly to the chanting of the Holy Name and following the
rules. This will keep us from being tricked by Maya. But there is no question
of disappointment for some temporary bewilderment. We are all new and
weak in this Krsna Consciousness. Just as everyone in the hospital is
diseased, and although they are trying to become well there is a chance that
anyone of them may relapse, but that does not mean that the hospital should
be closed. It is now our business to struggle with Maya, and when we win out
by Krsna's grace that is to regain our natural healthy life of Krsna
Consciousness. So there is no case of disappointment.

Please continue to chant this mantra as many times as possible throughout

the day and night. Even when you are walking, you can softly chant Hare
Krishna, or even when you are on the bus going to somewhere you can also
chant. When you are working with your hands you can also chant and when
you are resting or going to take rest you can also chant. Even in your toilet
room while taking bath you can also chant. In this way there is no limitation
or restriction for chanting this Holy Name of God, Krishna, and His Energy,
Hara. In doing this business there is no loss, but there is very great gain
which is transcendental realization.

The chanting Hare Krishna is our main business, that is real initiation. And as

Devotees who are conscientious about the morning program gradually

develop strength and depth in Kåñëa consciousness; but those who, for
whatever reason, decrease their inclination towards early morning hearing
and chanting, gradually become weakened and susceptible to mäyä’s attack.
Certainly, those not committed to rising early and strong sädhana cannot
remain as brahmacärés, nor should such persons be allowed to live in the
brahmacäré-äçrama.
If devotees feel weak in Kåñëa consciousness, with decreased enthusiasm for

devotional service and an increase in material desires, the root cause is
usually poor hearing and chanting.
Do not let your mind be disturbed by so many things. Our movement is for
chanting Hare Krishna. One can be happy under any condition. Samah
duhkha-sukham dhiram. Krishna Consciousness does not depend on any
external arrangement. You should not go outside of the shelter of this
ISKCON. Just try to be happy by chanting Hare Krishna and following the
regulative principles.

If you simply make this determined vow—“I shall not allow my tongue to
taste anything not offered to Kåñëa and shall always engage my tongue in
chanting Hare Kåñëa”—then all perfection is in your grasp. Two simple things:

all.

If we always chant... Suppose I am now freed from all sinful reaction. I may be
attacked again. That is quite possible. I may be free from the disease but I
may be attacked again by this disease. That is possible. But if you always

sinful activities cannot touch you. And if you keep yourself without being
touched by the sinful activities, then your liberation is guaranteed.

One should practice chanting the names of the Lord always. The names of the
Lord and the Lord are non different. So Lord Kåñëa’s instructions to Arjuna to
“remember Me” and Lord Caitanya’s injunction to “always chant the names of
Lord Kåñëa” are the same instruction. There is no difference, because Kåñëa
and Kåñëa’s name are nondifferent.

One should always chant the holy name of the Supreme Lord, Kåñëa, because
Kåñëa is the most suitable name of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The
name Kåñëa and the Supreme Person Kåñëa are nondifferent. Therefore, if
one concentrates his mind on hearing and chanting Hare Kåñëa, the same
result is achieved.

as far as possible one should actually vibrate these transcendental pastimes
of the Lord.

All the inhabitants of Våndävana are Vaiñëavas. They are all-auspicious

because somehow or other they always chant the holy name of Kåñëa. Even
though some of them do not strictly follow the rules and regulations of
devotional service, on the whole they are devotees of Kåñëa and chant His
name directly or indirectly. Purposely or without purpose, even when they
pass on the street they are fortunate enough to exchange greetings by saying
the name of Rädhä or Kåñëa. Thus directly or indirectly they are auspicious.

The Lord replied, “You should engage yourself in the service of the servants of
Kåñëa and always chant the holy name of Kåñëa. If you do these two things,
you will very soon attain shelter at Kåñëa’s lotus feet.”

Of the nine processes of devotional service, the most important is to always

chant the holy name of the Lord. If one does so, avoiding the ten kinds of
offenses, one very easily obtains the most valuable love of Godhead.

We cannot realize the Supreme Personality of Godhead by any artificial

means. We must engage faithfully in the service of the Lord. Such service
begins with the tongue, which means that we should always chant the holy
names of the Lord and accept kåñëa-prasäda. We should not chant or accept
anything else. When this process is faithfully followed, the Supreme Lord
reveals Himself to the devotee.

One should always remember that Kåñëa is within his heart and think of Him.
This is the proper system of meditation. If we always chant the Hare Kåñëa
mahä-mantra, we will always remember Kåñëa, and immediately the form of
Kåñëa will be awakened within our hearts. The process of always thinking of
Kåñëa is the process of Kåñëa consciousness.

Just always chant Hare Kåñëa. Never mind whether you are in a factory or in
a hell, in a shack or in a skyscraper—it doesn’t matter. Just go on chanting

Räma Räma, Hare Hare.

Dayänanda: “To become inattentive while chanting the holy name.” One
must remain attentive.
Prabhupäda: Yes. This is very important. When you will chant, you should
hear also. Then your attention will be there. And if you are chanting and you
are thinking something else, that is also an offense. You should be careful.

Yes, the mind is subject to so many impressions from past activities as well as
so many past lifetimes, so when disturbing thoughts enter your mind you
should simply ignore them. The process is to follow the regulative principles
and regularly chant 16 rounds. That is our strength in spiritual life and
gradually all problems will be resolved. So simply be persevering and go on
chanting attentively and all these temporary manifestations will come to
pass.

When I flew to London from Los Angeles, there was no darkness, for we did
not allow the sun to set, you remain always in light. This means that if you
don't forget Krsna, your life will be successful. If you aim your plane westward
and don't stop, you will remain in sunlight all the time. Similarly, if you
remain in Krsna consciousness by the simple method of chanting Hare Krsna,
Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare, Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama,
Hare Hare, you will never see the darkness. This is because Krsna and Krsna's
name are absolute; Krsna is not different from His name. Krsna is light, and if
we associate with the name of Krsna, we remain in light. Remaining in light is
a very simple method; therefore you see all these boys with their beads
chanting Hare Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare. In this way maya
cannot touch them. No intoxication, no illicit sex, no meat-eating, no

gambling. How can these boys, who have been trained to practice these four
items from the beginning of their lives, give them all up? Everything is
possible, provided we make the choice.
At the present moment we see that some of the members of the International
Society for Krishna Consciousness are tending to leave their preaching
activities in order to sit in a solitary place. This is not a very good sign. It is a
fact that Çrila Bhaktisiddhänta Sarasvaté Öhäkura has condemned this
process for neophytes. Sitting in a solitary place intending to chant the Hare
Kåñëa mahä-mantra is considered a cheating process. This practice is not
possible for neophytes at all. The neophyte devotee must act and work very
laboriously under the direction of the spiritual master, and he must thus
preach the cult of Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu. Only after maturing in devotion
can he sit down in a solitary place to chant the Hare Kåñëa mahä-mantra as
Çré Caitanya Mahäprabhu Himself did.

Therefore unless one is extremely advanced in Kåñëa consciousness, one

should not imitate Haridäsa Öhäkura, who had no other business than
chanting the holy name always, twenty-four hours a day. Prahläda Mahäräja
does not condemn such a process; he accepts it, but without active service to
the Lord, simply by such methods one generally cannot attain liberation. One
cannot attain liberation simply by false pride.
nondevotees, the influence of the modes of nature is very difficult to surpass.
All of you are coming from backgrounds of bad habits, so to make progress in
Krishna Consciousness we must overlook the faults of others. Chanting
offenselessly is the remedy for all of these diseases.
Letter to: Vidarbha Kanya -- Vrindaban 19 August, 1974
As soon as you become expert hearer and expert chanter, then you will
remember Krishna always. And as soon as you will always remember Kåñëa,
then there is no more fear. That is life.

conviction on the statement of Lord Chaitanya that simply by chanting the
maha-mantra, one can be gradually elevated to the highest to the platform.”

Our chanting must be like the desperate cry of a lost child crying for its
mother. The mood should be one of the helplessness and utter dependence
on Krishna.
“...Generally, it is the process to simply chant and hear, but if Krishna’s lila
comes into remembrance that is very good. It should come automatically. Not
that you are remembering artificially.”
Our prayer of the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra means addressing Radha and
Krishna for the being engaged in Their service. Meaning of the maha-mantra
is “O Radharani O Krsna! Please engage me in your service so that I can get
relief from the service of maya”
One should chant prescribed quota of rounds every day, even in the midst of
adverse and trying circumstances. Also, one should endeavor to improve
one’s quality of japa.
Chanting involves the activities of the upper and lower lips as well as the
tongue. All three must be engaged in chanting the Hare Kåñëa mahä-mantra.
The words “Hare Kåñëa” should be very distinctly pronounced and heard.
Sometimes one mechanically produces a hissing sound instead of chanting
with the proper pronunciation with the help of the lips and tongue. Chanting
is very simple, but one must practice it seriously.

Hare Krishna!
We should sterilize our mind and body everyday by chanting Hare

Krishna. Essence of Srimad-Bhagavatam is to glorify SPOG Krishna. In
Kali-yuga Krishna has descended in the form of His Holy Name.
Chanting 16 rounds mantra after mantra is most important activity for

a devotee. The quality of chanting also depends on what we do
throughout the day.
We should not take the process for granted. The entanglements which
a devotee has is negligible compared to the entanglements of a karmi.
The self wants to be a devotee but all distracting thoughts come,

because the mind overpowers the wish of the soul, and makes him a
dasa and to subsequently suffer. We have to identify our uncontrolled
mind as an enemy and train it to follow the instructions / directions of
the self. Then one becomes the master of the mind and is called a
goswami. In japa, too, the mind wants the self to be absorbed in
mundane subject matter. Actually the self should subjugate the mind
and force it to think and hear Krishna’s Holy names.
One can achieve real advancement by avoiding offenses and material

desires. Otherwise, chanting leads to fulfillment of these material
desires. Where is the question of advancement? We can get rid of
offenses by desiring to get freed of offenses. We have to beg to the
Holy Name to give us a drop of the real taste.
Chant HK to be enjoyed by Krishna in Name, we struggle to hear &

chant, this is what is pleasing to Krishna – our expression of our desire
to please Krishna. Krishna told Arjuna that you will give Me enjoyment
by fighting. We can please Krishna by fighting our mind. & if allow the
mind to take us for a ride then we are aging chanting Holy Name in the
mood of enjoyer. As long as you are fighing to kill one after distracting
thought after another, just like Arjuna killing one Kurus after another –
we have to keep shooting the arrows by chanting sincerely. That fight
is pleasing to krishna. We chant japa for pleasure of Krishna & our
purification & it comes when we fight against mind. Then Krishna will
reveal in His Name. As long as you try to enjoy you suffer & when try to
give pleasure to Krishna you become blissful.
We should always remember that if we can keep ourselves always in

company with Kåñëa, we shall attain all perfection. And especially in
this age, Kåñëa has incarnated as the holy name (kali-käle näma-rüpe
kåñëa-avatära, Cc. Ädi 17.22). Therefore Caitanya Mahäprabhu says:
nämnäm akäri bahudhä nija-sarva-çaktis
taträrpitä niyamitaù smaraëe na kälaù
“My dear Lord, You are so kind that You are giving me Your association
in the form of Your holy name, and this holy name can be chanted in
any situation.” There are no hard and fast rules for chanting Hare
Kåñëa. One can chant Hare Kåñëa anywhere. Children, for example,
also chant and dance. It is not at all difficult. While walking, our
students take their beads with them and chant. Where is the loss? But
the gain is very great, for by chanting we associate with Kåñëa
personally. Suppose we were to associate personally with the
President. How proud we would feel. “Oh, I am with the President.” So
should we not feel very much proud if we were to associate with the
supreme president, who is able to create many millions of presidents
like those of this world? This chanting is our opportunity to do so.
Therefore Caitanya Mahäprabhu says, etädåçé tava kåpä bhagavan
mamäpi: “My dear Lord, You are so kind to me that You are always
prepared to give me Your association.” Durdaivam édåçam ihäjani
nänurägaù: “But I am so unfortunate that I do not take advantage of
this opportunity.”
