Slender Column Problem Design of an interior column braced against sidesway

Consider a 10-story office building, laterally braced against sidesway by an elevator shaft (Q is
computed less than 0.05). The second floor has an atrium opening for a two-story high column.
Design the column for the unfactored design forces given below, obtained from a first-order
analysis. The framing beams are 400 mm wide and 500 mm deep with 7 m center-to-center
spans. The beam depth includes a slab thickness of 150 mm. The story height is 4 m and column
height is 8.5 m. Assume that the bracing provides full resistance to lateral forces and the columns
only resist gravity loads. Start with an initial column size of 500 mm square.f’c = 40 MPa for all
beams and columns;fy = 420 MPa.

Unfactored loads Dead load Live Load

Axial load 2150 kN 1670 kN
Top moment -115 kN·m -70 kN·m
Bottom moment -96 kN·m -61 kN·m
Note: Moments are positive when counterclockwise at column ends. The column is bent in double
curvature.
