TExES Competencies:

Competency 1: Human Development: The teacher understands the process of human development and
applies that knowledge to plan instructions and assessments that motivate the students and are
responsive to their developmental characteristics and needs.
- The teacher understands the processes of development, so that they can easily plan out lesson
plans according to the levels of understanding of the students and that are motivational to the
students learning process.

Competency 2: The Teacher Understands Diversity: The teacher understands student diversity and
knows how to plan learning experiences and design assessments that are responsive to differences
among students and that promote all students' learning.

- The teacher is able to distinguish different learning styles of each student, and they can
incorporate each of the styles into their lessons so that each student can get the most out of the
lesson.

Competency 3: Designing Effective Planning: The teacher understands procedures for designing
effective and coherent instruction and assessment bases on appropriate learning goals and objectives.

- The teacher can create lesson plans and objectives that are effective and that appropriate for the
classroom and subject they are teaching.

Competency 4: How Learning Occurs: The teacher understands learning processes and factors that
impact student learning and demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction
and appropriate assessments.

- The teacher must know how to educate students by their different learning styles, and they
should always plan lessons that are engaging and relevant.

Competency 5: The Importance of a Positive Classroom Environment: The teacher knows how to
establish a classroom climate that fosters learning, equity and excellence and uses this knowledge to
create a physical and emotional environment that is safe and productive.

- The teacher is able to make their classroom feel like a safe place for the students to be in. The
classroom should also make each student feel like they belong and that they are equally as
important as their classmates.

Competency 6: Managing Student Behavior: The teacher understands strategies for creating an
organized and productive learning environment and for managing student behavior.

- The teacher has guidelines and rules that help to keep their classroom under control, while still
maintaining a productive environment.
Competency 7: Implementing Effective, Responsive Instruction and Assessment: The teacher
understand and applies principles and strategies for communicating effectively in varied teaching and
learning context.

- The teacher has the ability to fully communicate instruction and assessments to the students
clearly so that each student understands what is expected of them.

Competency 8: Student Motivation and Engagement: The teacher provides appropriate instruction that
actively engages students in the learning process.

- With each lesson, the teacher should be able to incorporate two of more learning styles so that
the students can be as fully engaged as possible.

Competency 9: Using Technology as an Effective Instructional Tool: The teacher incorporates the
effective use of technology to plan, organize, deliver and evaluate instruction for all students.

- An effective teacher is able to work their way around technology in order to teach to their full
potential.

Competency 10: Assessment: The teacher monitors student performance an achievement; provides
students with timely, high quality feedback; and responds flexibility to promote learning for all students.

- The teacher is timely and orderly when it comes to providing feedback on assignments. They are
able to give feedback that is helpful to the students and that increases their learning.

Competency 11: Increasing Parental Involvement: The teacher understands the importance of family
involvement in children's education ad knows how to interact and communicate effectively with
families.

- The teacher understands how important it is to keep in contact with the families of the students
and they also know how to include them throughout the student’s school career.

Competency 12: Reflective Practice and Professional Responsibilities: The teacher enhances
professional knowledge and skills by effectively interacting with other members of the educational
community and participating in various types of professional activities.

- As the teacher, they should be continuously learning with the students by being up to date on
new technology, course information, and by being an active member in their community and
school.

Competency 13: Legal and Ethical Requirements for Educators: The teacher understands and adheres to
legal and ethical requirements for educators and is knowledgeable of the structure of education in Texas.

- The teacher understands their legal and moral obligations and upholds them to the best of their
ability.
