Teacher Professional Growth Plan

_
PSI Student Teacher: Rae-Ann Riehl Semester: Fall 2019
School: Sunalta Elementary
Professional Goal Statement #1: Throughout my PS I practicum, I would like to develop a stronger ‘teacher presence’ in the classroom that
strongly captures and maintains student attention by establishing strong relationships with students and developing classroom management skills.

Rationale:
 This is important because a strong teacher presence allows for the students to trust, follow, and respect me so that they feel comfortable to
listen to me and therefore be able to engage in my lessons
 Strong relationships with students is integral for them to feel safe with me in the classroom and to feel comfortable to express themselves and
their own culture – which is a crucial part of my teaching philosophy
Teaching Quality Standard (KSAs/Competencies):
 TQS 1: Fostering Effective Relationships
 TQS 4: Establishing Inclusive Learning Environments
Strategy(s): Timeline(s) Resource(s) Indicator(s) of Success
1. Observe TA of how she captures the students attention while teaching, and Week 1 TA Noting specific strategies that
regains it when necessary in the classroom work for her and that I would
like to try in my logbook
Create icebreaker activity and
2. Learn names of students by doing ice breaker activity Week 1 be able to place faces to names

Reflection(s):
 To what extent are my strategies helping me achieve this professional goal?
o The icebreaker activity was very helpful because it helped me to learn names and also go further to associate students with their interests and strengths which I believe
will allow me to build a foundational relationship that will allow me to gain trust of students and respect going forward.
 How are my strategies influencing my classroom practice?
o By watching the way my TA captures student attention and noting ways that work well, I am building my ‘toolbox’ of ways for me to try out and implement myself. It is
good to observe to first understand the way students respond and to evaluate which ways I feel will work best for myself.
 To what extent are my strategies impacting student learning?
o By creating an icebreaker activity, I am gaining the trust of students and establishing myself as a trusted adult so that they will feel comfortable to ask me
questions
o By learning ways to capture and keep their attention, I will be able to manage the classroom so that it remains a positive and effective learning environment for
the students.
Professional Goal Statement #2: Throughout my PS I Practicum, I would like to become involved throughout the school and foster professional
relationships with staff throughout the entire school so that I can learn from many different professionals.

Rationale:
 I think it will be an asset for me to learn from many different resources: it will be useful for me to professionally develop by learning from my TA,
as well as other staff in the school.

 Teaching is an autonomous career and so each professional will have their own strategies and tools – it will be beneficial to get a breadth of
knowledge from various professionals
 Extracurricular activities are very important for mental health and belonging of students, so I believe it will be useful for me to get involved in
these programs at the school to build relationships with learners in my class, and even other classes too.
Teaching Quality Standard (KSAs/Competencies):
 TQS 1: Fostering Effective Relationships
 TQS 2: Engaging in Career-Long Learning
Strategy(s): Timeline(s) Resource(s) Indicator(s) of Success
1. Attend the PD sessions on Friday Friday, Week 1 Take Notes in logbook
anything you’ve learned in
the PD session
2. Learn names of other teachers in grade 3, and possibly other grades Week 1 Gaining comfort to
approach and speak to
other teachers and staff
Reflection(s):
 To what extent are my strategies helping me achieve this professional goal?
o On Friday, there were team meetings and staff meetings which allowed me to watch the way the school year/days are planned by the entire staff as well as by single
grade teachers
o The team meeting was very interesting to see that way teachers co-plan to ensure their classes are in line with each other and on the same path going forward
 How are my strategies influencing my classroom practice?
o By engaging in meetings, I am able to have an idea of the following week and thereby be prepared for each lesson I will teach in the coming week
o By making a point to interact with the other grade 3 teachers, I am now able to watch a PS3 student who is student teaching the other third grade class and learn from
her throughout my practicum as well
 To what extent are my strategies impacting student learning?
o Being aware of my colleagues and the school plans each week, I will be able to maintain consistency for students throughout my time here so that students can maintain a
routine for their days and be ready for learning
