Dear Ms. McFadden ,

Thank you for taking the time to look through our Multimedia project. We read the book Who
Fears Death written by author Nnedi Okorafor , the book takes place during the post apocalyptic
times in Africa. The book takes us through the life of a woman names Onyesonwu who
throughout the book has faced many hardships and discrimination due to the fact that she was a
child of rape and also due to the fact that her skin color was different to the people surrounding
her. She was raised far from the townspeople and finally joined the village when her mother got
married. She also was further discriminated against when she found out of her “supernatural
powers” during her stepfather’s funeral. These new found powers and her lighter skin tone made
her and even larger target for discrimination from her peers, some even went as far to compare
her to an evil entity. Throughout the entire book Onyesonwu faces discrimination and the
hardships of fitting in , all simply because of the way she looked.

We chose discrimination as our topic because even though this is a nonfiction book this is a very
prominent problem in today’s society, and has been a problem in our society for many years.
Often times discrimination stems off of fear of the unknown which is also something that
happened in this book Onyesonwu was discriminated against because her skin color was lighter
in comparison to her peers and that gave away the fact that she was of mixed race something
frowned upon during the time her book took place. They were also frightened of her because of
the powers she possessed and the fact that they knew not how to control it.

This has happened over and over again throughout our nation's history all because of fear, fear
of not knowing how to control things, fear of accepting the different things people have to offer.
Throughout our multimedia project you will see things pertaining to today's society and
problems that are happening today, things that started off hundreds of years ago and because of
close minded people are still continuing to take place.

Best regards
Nicole Caldas and Ami Cevallos

This political cartoon is showing that the kkk discriminates against not only african americans
but also against people with different sexual orientation. This cartoon even goes as far to
insinuate that the mississippi legislature also takes part in these heinous hate crimes. This
touches base on the fact that this is still a very ongoing and active problem problem in today’s
society which is often covered up by people high inpower who also support these hateful views
and participate in these activities.
I'm Not Racist
Joyner Lucas
With all due respect

I don't have pity for you black niggas, that's the way I feel

Screamin' "Black Lives Matter"

All the black guys rather be deadbeats than pay your bills

Yellin' "nigga this" and "nigga that"

Call everybody "nigga" and get a nigga mad

As soon as I say "nigga" then everyone react

And wanna swing at me and call me racist 'cause I ain't black

Well pound that then

Talkin' about slavery like you was around back then

Like you was pickin' cotton off the fuckin' ground back then

Like you was on the plantation gettin' down back then

Aight, look

I see a black man aiming' his gun

But I'd rather see a black man claimin' his son

And I don't mean just for one day and you done

I mean, you still trapped in a rut

And I work my ass off and I pay my taxes for what?

So you can keep livin' off free government assistance?

Food stamps for your children, but you're still tryna sell 'em

For some weed and some liquor or a fuckin' babysitter

While you party on the road 'cause you ain't got no fuckin' goals?

You already late

You motherfuckas needa get your damn priorities straight

Wait, it's like you're proud to be fake

But you lazy as fuck and you'd rather sell drugs

Than get a job and be straight, and then you turn around and complain

About the poverty rate? Fuck outta my face!

You can't escape problems

You can pray for some change but can't break a dollar

Got nobody else to blame, so you blame Donald

"They fuck the world with a Make America Great condom"

My voice been back

I'm not racist, my sister's boyfriend's black

I'm not racist, my sister-in-law's baby cousin Tracy

Got a brother and his girlfriend's black

My head's in the cloud

Heard there's not enough jobs for all the men in your house

Maybe we should build a wall to keep the Mexicans out

Or maybe we should send 'em all to the ghetto for now

I'm not racist and I never lie

But I think there's a disconnect between your culture and mine

I worship the Einsteins, study the Steve Jobs

But you ride 2Pac's dick like he was a fuckin' god, oh my god

And all you care about is rappin'

And stuntin' and bein' ratchet, and that's the nigga within you

Music rotting your brain and slowly start to convince you

Then you let your kids listen and then the cycle continues

Blame it all on the menu, blame it on those drinks

Blame it on everybody except for your own race

Blame it on white privileges, blame it on white kids

And just blame it on white citizens, same with the vice president
Bunch of class clowns

Niggas kneelin' on the field, that's a flag down

How dare you try to make demands for this money?

You gon' show us some respect, you gon' stand for this country, nigger!

I'm not racist

I'm just prepared for this type of war

I heard Eminem's rap at the awards, who's he fightin' for?

Y'all can take that motherfucker, too, he ain't white no more

It's like you wanna be so famous

You'll do anything for attention and a little payment

I can't take you nowhere without people pointin' fingers

Pants hangin' off your ass, you ain't got no home trainin'?

Put your fuckin' pants up, nigga! Put that suit back on!

Take that du-rag off! Take that gold out your mouth!

Quit the pitiful stuff

And then maybe police would stop killin' you fucks

Yo, what the fuck? I'm not racist

It's like we livin' in the same buildin' but split into two floors

I'm not racist

But there's two sides to every story, I wish that I knew yours

I wish that I knew yours

I'm not racist, I swear

With all disrespect

I don't really like you white motherfuckers, that's just where I'm at

Screaming "All Lives Matter"

Is a protest to my protest, what kind of shit is that?

And that's one war you'll never win

The power in the word "nigga" is a different sin

We shouldn't say it but we do, and that just what it is

But that don't mean that you can say it just 'cause you got nigga friends

Nigga, that word was originated for you to keep us under

And when we use it, we know that's just how we greet each other

And when you use it, we know there's a double meaning under

And even if I wasn't picking cotton physically

That don't mean I'm not affected by the history

My grandmama was a slave, that shit gets to me

And you ain't got no motherfucking sympathy, you pussy nigga!

I'm sorry you can never feel my life

Tryna have faith, but I never felt alright

It's hard to elevate when this country's ran by whites

Judging me by my skin color and my blackness

Tryna find a job but ain't nobody call me back yet

Now I gotta sell drugs to put food in my cabinet

You crackers ain't slick, this is all a part of your tactics

Don't talk about no motherfucking taxes, when I ain't making no dough

You think you know everything but you don't

You wanna copy our slang and everything that we know

Try to steal black culture and then make it your own, whoa

Fuck, I'm exhausted

I can't even drive without the cops tryna start shit

I'm tired of the systematic racism bullshit

All you do is false shit, this the shit that I'm force fed
And you don't know shit about my people, that's what bothers you

You don't know about no fried chicken and no barbeque

You don't know about the two-step or no loose change

You don't know about no 2 Chainz or no Kool-Aid, you don't know!

And even though Barack was half as black

You hated president Obama, I know that's a fact

You couldn't wait to get him out and put a cracker back

And then you gave us Donald Trump and now it's payback for that

I'm not racist, I never lied

But I know there's a disconnect between your culture and mine

Yeah, I praise 2Pac like he was a fuckin' god

He was fighting for his life way before he fuckin' died, nigga, die nigga!

And all you care about is money and power

And being ugly and that's the cracker within you

Hatred all in your brain, it slowly start to convince you

And then you teach it to your children until the cycle continue

Blame it on Puerto Rico, blame it on OJ

Blame it on everybody, except for your own race

Blame it on black niggas and blame it on black citizens

Aim at the black businesses, I ain't saying I'm innocent

But, I might be any day now

Treatin' everybody how you want and any way how

I swear North Korea 'bout to bomb us any day now

And now I'm duckin' everytime I hear a fuckin' plane now, shit

You know I make a lot of sense but you just can't admit it

When Eminem went against Trump, that was the illest

'Cause even though he's white, he let us know he standin' with us

I'm not racist, but I cry a lot

You don't know what it's like to be in a frying pot

You don't know what it's like to mind your business

And get stopped by the cops and not know if you 'bout to die or not

You worry 'bout your life, so you take mine

I love you but I fuckin' hate you at the same time

I wish we could trade shoes or we could change lives

So we could understand each other more but that'd take time

I'm not racist

It's like we livin' in the same buildin' but splittin' the both sides

I'm not racist

But there's two sides to every story and now you know mine

Can't erase the scars with a bandage

I'm hopin' maybe we can come to an understandin'

Agree to disagree, we could have an understandin'
I'm not racist

This rap written by Joyner Lucas starts off with a caucasian person degrading and talk about a
person of color. Which then pans to the person of color defending themselves while also
degrading the caucasian person. All things said were very controversial and harsh but are things
that are mainly stereotypes. The writer also very often inputs the words “ I’m not racist” being
said by both parts after a very racist thing which i think goes to show that sometimes people see
these things and truly believe that they are true and they are not racist.
summary : this is a news article which speaks on the death of a 24 year old male who was
found dead in a wooded area near his house, the police say it was suicide but the mother insist
it was a hate crime and her son was lynched

Ferguson protester claims her 24-year-old

son was lynched, but the local authorities are
investigating his death as a suicide

● Melissa McKinnies, a woman who was involved in the Ferguson, Missouri

protests in 2014, claims that her 24-year-old son has been lynched.
● The body of Dayne Jones was found October 17, hanging from a bed sheet in a
wooded area near the home he shared with his mother.
● But local law enforcement are investigating Jones' death as a suicide.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Authorities are investigating the death of a Ferguson protester's son
as a suicide, although a message on social media posted by his mother has sparked
assertions that it was a lynching.
Melissa McKinnies, who was active in the St. Louis suburb after the fatal police shooting
of Michael Brown in 2014, posted the Facebook message, saying "They lynched my
baby."
The message, which Facebook later removed, began trending on Twitter and Reddit,
causing people online and in the community to press officials for more answers about
the death of 24-year-old Danye Jones.
His body was found on October 17, near the north St. Louis County home he and his
mother shared.
St. Louis County police spokesman Shawn McGuire said Wednesday that Jones' body
was found in a wooded area behind the home. A police report lists "suicide" as the
nature of the investigation.
The medical examiner's determination of the cause of death could take several weeks.
Administrator Suzanne McCune said the office doesn't issue preliminary findings.
McKinnies does not have a listed phone number. But the Rev. Darryl Gray, a leading St.
Louis activist who has met with McKinnies several times since her son's death,
confirmed McKinnies' Facebook posting. Gray said it was Facebook, not McKinnies,
who took it down.
The posting showed pictures of McKinnies' son hanging from what appeared to be a
bedsheet. It read, "They lynched my baby."
A rally in support of Jones is scheduled for Thursday outside the St. Louis County
Justice Center in Clayton, Missouri.
McKinnies was among thousands who took to the streets in Ferguson, Missouri, after
Brown's death on August 9, 2014. Brown, a black and unarmed 18-year-old, was fatally
shot by white officer Darren Wilson during a street confrontation. Wilson was not
charged and later resigned, but the shooting led to months of protests and helped give
rise to the Black Lives Matter movement.

here's how his death is being commemorated
Gray said he was unaware of any evidence indicating foul play. But he said McKinnies
and other activists from Ferguson are often harassed and threatened via text and social
media.
"She believes (Jones' death) was meant as a message to her," Gray said.
Police continue to investigate the deaths of two prominent Ferguson protesters, both of
whom were found killed inside of torched vehicles — DeAndre Joshua in November
2014 and Darren Seals in September 2016.
This news article speaks on the death of 24 year old Daryne Jones who was found dead by his
mother hanging from a tree with his pants pulled down. The mother insists that her son was
lynched while the police say it was simply suicide, the mother and the son were both very active
protesters and activists and the son was also a homosexual all reason the mother said her son
could have been killed for. Also while looking up this situation i only found 3 actual news
articles that spoke on this and all with a leading sentence as their title, there is no coverage on the
death of this young man who could have lost his life simply because of the fact he was an african
american and also possibly because of his sexual orientation.

Journal Article (Insurance Journal)

Texas Roadhouse, a national, Kentucky-based restaurant chain, will pay $12 million and furnish
other relief to settle an age discrimin-ation lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment
Oppor-tunity Commission (EEOC), the federal agency announced.

The EEOC had filed suit seeking relief for a class of applicants the EEOC charged had been denied
front-of-the-house positions, such as servers, hosts, server assistants and bartenders, because of
their age – 40 years and older. As part of the settlement, Texas Roadhouse will change its hiring
and recruiting practices.

The EEOC's lawsuit, Civil Action No. 1:11-cv-11732-DJC, filed in September 2011 in U.S. District
Court for the District of Massachusetts, alleged that Texas Roadhouse violated federal law by
engaging in a nationwide pattern or practice of age discrimination in hiring hourly front-of-the-
house employees. The case, which was scheduled for a retrial on May 15, 2017, had resulted in a
hung jury after nearly a four-week trial earlier this year.

"I am pleased to see this matter come to a mutually agreed-upon resolution," said EEOC Acting
Chair Victoria A. Lipnic in a press release. "As we mark the 50th anniversary of the Age
Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) this year, it is as important as ever to recognize the very
real consequences of age discrimination and the need for job opportunities for older workers."

The consent decree resolving the case, which was approved by Judge Denise Casper, sets up a
claims process that will identify and compensate those affected individuals age 40 and older who
applied to Texas Roadhouse for a front-of-the-house position between Jan. 1, 2007, and Dec. 31,
2014.

"The decree includes robust terms that will ensure that Texas Roadhouse complies with the law,"
said EEOC Deputy General Counsel James Lee in the release. "As a national law enforcement
agency, the EEOC will vigorously protect the rights of job applicants to ensure that hiring decisions
are based on abilities, not age."

In addition to the monetary relief, the consent decree, which will be in force for three and a half
years, includes an injunction preventing Texas Roadhouse from discriminating on the basis of age
in the future. It also requires the company to establish a diversity director and pay for a decree
compliance monitor, who is charged with ensuring that the company complies with the decree's
terms. These terms require Texas Roadhouse to comply with the ADEA and to increase its
recruitment and hiring of employees age 40 and older for front-of-the-house positions.

"Identifying and resolving age discrimination in employment is critical for older Americans," said
EEOC New York District Director Kevin Berry in the release. "The ability to find a new job should not
be impeded because an employer considers someone the wrong age."

Mark Penzel and Sara Smolik were the EEOC's lead trial attorneys for this case.

Individuals who believe they may have been denied a front-of-the-house position at Texas
Roadhouse because of their age after Jan. 1, 2007, should contact the EEOC.

This article talks about how Texas Roadhouse a popular food chain was caught discriminating
people due to their age. The older people were turned down the job opportunities that involved
clientele interaction such as hosting and serving. The idea behind this was fresh faces bring in
customers and enhance the liveliness of the restaurant, while this may be true the restaurant was
in the wrong by denying the elderly a job position. The restaurant was sueded and ended up
agreeing on a settlement of 12 billion. This case brought to light the harsh reality that people face
due to their age and just how the workplace may be taking advantage and mistreating its
workers.
Poem
I don’t mind the human race.
I’ve got pretty used to them
In these past twenty-five years.
I don’t mind if they sit next
To me on streetcars, or eat
In the same restaurants, if
It’s not at the same table.
However, I don’t approve
Of a woman I respect
Dancing with one of them. I’ve
Tried asking them to my home
Without success. I shouldn’t
Care to see my own sister
Marry one. Even if she
Loved him, think of the children.
Their art is interesting,
But certainly barbarous.
I’m sure, if given a chance,
They’d kill us all in our beds.
And you must admit, they smell.

The poem above touches the topic of discrimination and “in the closet racism”, people who claim
they are not racists but indeed are. The person in the poem is sharing his thoughts on a race and
the misconceptions he believes without directly stating that he is racist. The remarks insinuate
that the speaker is a racist and is in denial “I don't mind if they sit next to me on streetcars, or eat
in the same restaurants, however I don't approve of a woman I respect dancing with them” the
speaker has a fraudulent and fragile mindset, the views the speaker portrays can change within
the circumstance. This poem shows the mentality that many people have had and continue to
have today.
The advertisement above was released and published by intel, the ad shows a white man standing
high and mighty as the leader while the black/colored people are the employees basically bowing
down to the white man. This is a racial discriminatory ad, the ad suggests that black people/non
white people are meant to be the workers, the employees, the slaves of the all knowing and all
mighty white man. The ad also claims that the white man has the power to raise the work rate of
the employees by buying intel, so the white man controls the colored employees? Not only does
this show white supremacy but it shows the mindset behind those running big corporations such
as intel. The ad is extremely offensive and was later removed by intel.

Nicole’s reflection
Before starting this multimedia project I knew that racism and discrimination was still something
very prominent in today society. However while doing this I discovered to what extent, people
always show tolerance in public but when they get to private settings or there comfort zones it’s
when there true feelings come out. Like with people in politics that are involved with these
hateful organizations they need to act a certain way to the public. It was also very sad to see
somethings go down without justice like the death of Dayne Jones, yes there is no clear evidence
that it was a lynching, or so they say but there was also no clear evidence that is was suicide, and
there has been little to no news coverage on this. Doing this project further showed me that there
is still lots of hatred in this world and that is something that will possibly never change.

Ami’s reflection
Racism and discrimination are subjects I feel will never truly die down, it would be lovely if we
could all live in a place of peace but in my opinion that is unrealistic. Reading this book with an
apocalyptic timeline really gave me a sense of the magnitude and duration racism and
discrimination has had. These two subjects have been around since the dawn of time, upon
reflecting I thought back to your words “Be the change you want to see” “Well what are you
gonna do about it” “Don’t allow yourself to be controlled” when pondering I came to the
realization that I don’t want to be a passive person anymore, I want to be the change. I was
appalled to see so many examples about racism and discrimination, it hurt me to see just how
badly humans can treat one another. In the future I hope for change and I hope I can be the
change or at least influence it.
