The difference is made clear, when we think of a purchase order that is sent as an Doc. If we send the purchase order to a supplier then the supplier will store the purchase order as a sales order. However, if we send the purchase order via ALE to another R/3 system, then the receiving system will store the purchase order also as a purchase order. Most of the popular middleware systmes like Informatica, WebMethods, BizTalk, TIBCO, Gentran are having IDoc adapters. In outbound communication from SAP, EDI & ALE greatly differs in partner determination (partner to whom the IDoc should be sent) EDI In EDI the partner is determined based on output type configuration. A partner profile should be maintained for every partner. Usually this setup is used for communication with external customers & Vendors also known as B2B communication. Partner profiles gives control over when to send IDocs and what data to be sent in control record of IDocs to a business partner.
