Peer Observation 1

Please ensure that the observer /‘critical friend’ has a copy of the lesson plan.
Date/Time: 11/10/2018, 9:30 – 10:15 Name of Student Teacher to be observed: Maryam
Alshemeli

Setting: PYP Grade: 4

Topic for the lesson: Layers of the Earth’s crust Name of Observer/Critical Friend: Fatema Altenaiji

Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to identify the layers of the earth Students will be able to compare and contrast the Earth’s
(inner core, outer core, mantle, and curst). crust, mantle, and core including thickness, and composition.

PEER OBSERVATION: AREA OF FOCUS

The student teacher wants to look at how well she uses questioning with grade 4 students through doing the
experiment. Because she believes that students need to develop exploring and independent skills that let them
explain their answers immediately.
Observed Strengths: Suggestions for further development:

-prepared well for the lesson -wait time

-engaged students with video during discussion -circulated around all groups
-use questioning
-confident and clear voice
-clear instructions before experiment
-hands-on materials provided for students

Reflection: it feels good conducting a formal observation with one of student-teacher friends. I think my
colleague feels good too because her lesson was successful and moved well. it was useful to discuss my
observation with my colleague after the lesson because it is a way to motivate her and give some point to
improve more in next lessons. my colleague accept my comments and she agree with the strengths too. In her
opinion she thinks that she will try the wait time as a classroom management strategy and she will move
around class groups too. Me and my colleague thinks that it was a valuable experience because as I observed
her, I learned a different experience from her teaching, in the other hand she is motivated from my comments

plan.

Comments or reasons for scoring above: student-teacher provides a well-planned lesson plan with all the required
information for the lesson, shows student-centered focus thro experiment, hands-on material provided appropriate for
learner's level. For further development she may incorporate differentiation through questioning or learning style.

Implementing and Managing Learning 1 2 3 4 5

 
Uses accurate and appropriate language.

Maintaining engagement – independence

Ensures instructions, questions & explanations are clear, accurate &

constructive.
Uses effective questioning & elicitation (probe, praise, rephrase, redirect)
techniques.

Establishes and maintains clear and consistent rules & routines.

Maintains an appropriate pace to challenge and motivate the students.

Uses a range of teaching strategies.

Manages lesson time effectively.

Comments or reasons for scoring above: uses appropriate language, maintaining engagement in the video discussion
and independence through learners working in pairs on the experiment. Uses effective questioning but for further
development she may use a variety of questioning styles

Monitoring and Assessment 1 2 3 4 5

 
Monitors student progress effectively during the session.

Provides ongoing feedback to students to enhance learning during the

session.

Uses formative and summative assessment instruments such as checklists,

grading scales, rubrics, tests and projects etc. to evaluate students’
performance.

Comments or reasons for scoring above: for further development in next lesson, she may circulate around all class
groups to monitor students progress more effectively during the session and provide ongoing feedback that enhance
their learning

Please share feedback immediately following the observation once the forms are completed.

Title of the lesson: Layers of the Earth’s crust

Professional Development Plan

(What do YOU need to work on in order to grow professionally?)
I believe that all teachers have different abilities in teaching and dealing with the students, so in my opinion, I think
that every teacher must be patient for the students. This is because each student has different level of understanding
the lesson and some of them need more explanation to understand the main idea of the lesson. Moreover, I need to
plan well for my lessons with varied managing strategies and different activities to let students learn and check their
understanding of the lesson.
1. Choose and describe an aspect from a teaching competency that you need to work on (Goal):
In this lesson, I will be working on (questioning) through doing the experiment. This is because grade4
students need to develop exploring and independent skills that let them to explain their answers immediately.
2. Describe what you will do to help achieve your goal (Strategies Used) make a list of questions at
different levels of bloom’s when lesson planning:
I will use to ask students varied questions through communicate with them. Also, I will use video to link
their prior knowledge about the lesson and they have to discuss what are the similarities and differences.
3. Describe how you can tell if you’re achieving your goal (Evidence) list of student responses, or
worksheets

The outcome or product of the students’ investigation (i.e. what will the students be
expected to produce at the end of their investigation)

 Students will be able to identify the layers of the earth (inner core, outer core, mantle,
and curst).
 Students will be able to compare and contrast the Earth’s crust, mantle, and core
including thickness, and composition.

Learning Outcomes (including strand and substrand)

 Students will be able to identify the layers of the earth (inner core, outer core, mantle,
and curst).
 Students will be able to compare and contrast the Earth’s crust, mantle, and core
including thickness, and composition.
Essential Question: Guided Questions:
 How are layers of the Earth different  How many layers that the Earth have?
from one another?  What is the depth layer in the Earth?
 What is the thickest layer in the
Earth?
