• Wisconsin Potato Industry Rooted in Diversity, Sustainability:

• According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, potatoes remain America’s
favorite and most-consumed vegetable.
• Dick Okray, owner of Okray Family Farms in Plover, also has a long family history in
Wisconsin potato farming. His family began growing potatoes in 1905 as Joseph
Okray & Bros. Co. Today, the farm grows 1,770 acres of russet, red and yellow
varieties for the fresh retail market. Okray says in addition to Wisconsin’s climate,
soil and location, the availability of a skilled workforce has proven a major
advantage for the company.

CONCEPT STATEMENT

• Agriculture has been a big factor of Stevens Point and how it was founded, the
amount of Polish immigrants that came here brought with them their trades
and crops. The landscape is similar to their homeland and they knew how to
cultivate crops in this type of dirt and these type of weather conditions. With
this being said, the Polish grew mostly potatoes which go very well in the soil
in Stevens Point . Therefore, this leads Wisconsin in having the most
production of potatoes before Idaho and Washington. This is very surprising
because those states are known for their potato production and crops, but
the Stevens Point area represents a large portion of those potatoes locally
grown.
