In the Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby is a character that rose from being poor to become

wealthy at the end of the novel. The problem with him being wealthy is that he did it

through the use of distributing illegal alcohol, and trading in stolen securities. Gatsby

became wealthy by participating in organized crimes. In the novel Gatsby is followed

by a shadow of death and how he was a figure of failure. Fitzgerald tries to emphasize

the details of whitewashing in America today through Gatsby character.

Death and failure two big words that ironically go together. If you fail in life, then what

are you worth most people would say nothing. If you have no money then you’re on

the streets and if you’re on the streets you catch all kind of diseases and death is surely

to follow.

otherwise and help his family in any way he could.

culminated in the failure of his transfer to a Veterans Affairs facility before

Hurricane Maria struck and his death after. The article discusses his time in the in the

service so that he can be able to support his family. Cheo was an old man who

needed an oxygen tank to breath and with the hurricane coming they had no intention

realized that there are more soldiers being home in body bags than there are arriving.

J. Farenga and Daniel Ness, vol. 1, M.E. Sharpe, 2005, pp. 318-321. Gale Virtual Reference

Various culture identities were viewed as a threat and dangerous. It was a belief that to

be American was to reject all native cultures and leaving behind the main culture that make

someone American. If you failed to be part of the dominate culture the you were seen as a

threat to political, economic, and social threat to the country. To today the view of becoming

American had been practice ion schools and have been for decades. Before there were public

schools there were color schools and only white schools but in today’s era people have come

together but, in the shadow, still believe that to become truly American means having wealth

and be able to sustain yourself.

The American dream is most common in immigrant it’s all they want but there is always

something that gets in their way stopping them from reaching their goals. Whether its their

social class, ethnicity, gender, or race they are always judged harshly. People have lost faith

in the American dream and resulted into other measures to get what they want.
