CONTROL OF DEFLECTIONS

Reinforced concrete specifications usually limit deflections by

1- Specifying certain minimum depths or thicknesses ACI Table 9.5(a)

2- Specifying maximum permissible computed deflections, ACI Table 9.5(b)Table 24.2.2—Maximum

permissible calculated deflections

Deflection
Member Condition Deflection to be considered
limitation

Not supporting or attached to nonstructural Immediate deflection due to maximum of Lr l/180

Flat roofs elements likely to be damaged by large S, and R

Floors deflections Immediate deflection due to L l/360

Likely to be That part of the total deflection occurring

damaged by after attachment of nonstructural elements, l/480
Supporting or attached large deflections which is the sum of the time-dependent
Roof or
to non-structural deflection due to all sustained loads and the
floors Not likely to be
elements immediate deflection due to any additional
damaged live load L l/240
by large deflections
CALCULATION OF DEFLECTIONS

Deflections that occur immediately on application of load shall be computed by usual methods or
formulas for elastic deflections, considering effects of cracking and reinforcement on member
stiffness. Actual beam deflection is a function of: 1) Load 2) Span 3) Stiffness
