Motor

Amperes law states that an electric charge passing through a looped circuit produces a magnetic field.

Interaction of the internal electromagnet with a surrounding fixed magnet produces the attractive and
repulsive force associated with the poles of magnets and causes rotation

A motor uses electrical energy to create rotational motion, but the bicycle generator uses mechanical
energy and coverts it into electrical energy

The motor can act as a generator if the person’s pedaling overcomes the electromotive force of the
battery.

Generator

Michael faraday discovered that if an object or material that conducts electricity passes through a
magnetic field, then an electric current will begin to flow through that material

In other words, the spinning tire causes the motor shaft to rotate, which produces a current through the
leads.

V-Belt

The majority of belt drives use V-belts. V-belts use a trapezoidal cross section to create a wedging action
on the pulleys to increase friction and the belt’s power transfer capability. Joined or multiple belts are
specified for heavy loads. V-belt drives can have a peak efficiency of 95% to 98% at the time of
installation. Efficiency is also dependent on pulley size, driven torque, under or over-belting, and V-belt
design and construction. Efficiency deteriorates by as much as 5% (to a nominal efficiency of 93%) over
time if slippage occurs because the belt is not periodically re-tensioned. Cogged belts have slots that run
perpendicular to the belt’s length. The slots reduce the belt’s bending resistance. Cogged belts can be
used with the same pulleys as equivalently rated Vbelts. They run cooler, last longer, and have an
efficiency that is about 2% higher than that of standard V-belts.

Thread Fastener

Wood Screws: These have a coarser pitch (few threads per inch) than sheet metal or machine screws, and
often have an unthreaded shank. The threadless shank allows the top piece of wood to be pulled flush
against the under piece without getting caught on the threads. Some wood screws are tapered from tip
to head, also.

Roller Chain

Bike chains. These chains transmit the power of pedaling to the back wheel. Most
bikes use chain; a few styles use cog belts, but these are the exceptions. In the early
stages of chain development, chain design grew in response to development in
bicycles.

In addition to bicycles, these chains may be used in low-speed, light-load

transmission operations, for example, in agriculture machines or with electric garage
door openers.
Sprockets

The basic sizes of the sprockets (front and rear) are common to all manufacturers;
however, the tooth shape is different. This is especially true for the sprockets for 1/2
3 3/32 chains. Each manufacturer designs its own tooth shapes for better shifting.
Exercise care when changing sprockets.

concept

As people the world over continue to search for renewable energy sources, innovative
and interesting ideas for generating power are constantly being devised. Those
interested in keeping fit and producing power at the same time might be interested in
this unique product – the Pedal-A-Watt. It converts your bicycle into a stationary bike
and uses your pedal power to generate energy that can be stored in a power pack. An
average rider can produce up to 200 watts – ride for an hour and you'll generate
enough to power a 25 watt fluorescent light bulb for eight hours.

So how does it work? You simply attach your bicycle to the Pedal-A-Watt stand and
start pedaling. The stand contains a generator which is spun by the movement of the
bicycle’s back wheel. The generator is made of a spinning magnet within a coil of wire,
as the magnet spins, electricity flows through the coil. The energy you generate can
be used straight away or can be stored in a battery in the power pack for use later.
The bicycle can be clipped into the stand in less than 30 seconds without having to
remove the rear tire, and if you want to do some road riding you simply pop your bike
out of the stand. Too easy.

How much pedaling will you need to do to charge average household appliances? If
you pedal for two hours then you should produce around 400 watt-hours of power.
That's enough to power a 200 watt television for two hours, or a 100 watt light bulb
for four hours. A 20 watt laptop PC could be charged for 20 hours and a 15 watt
fluorescent bulb for almost 27 hours.

An average adult rider could produce from 100 to 320 watts of power depending on
their physical strength, stronger and fitter adults could create between 225 to 320
watts or more. The stand is best suited to bicycles in reasonable condition with 26 or
27 inch wheels, but can also work with wheels greater than 10 inches. It weighs 23 lbs
and optional extras such as the cigarette lighter plug and 12 foot cable are also
available.
