Journal Article 1: Marion Spengler, Rodica Ioana Damian & Brent W. Roberts (2018). How

You Behave in School Predicts Life Success Above and Beyond Family Background, Broad

Traits, and Cognitive Ability.

1. Objective of the article.

Firstly, the author investigated the role of student characteristics and behaviors in a

longitudinal study over a 50-year timespan (using a large U.S representative sample

of high school students). The author addressed the question of whether behaviors

in school have any long-lasting effects for one’s late life. Then, the author

investigated the role of being a responsible student, interest in school, writing skills,

and reading skills in predicting educational attainment, occupational prestige, and

income 11 & 50 years after school.

2. Justified the research.

Firstly, this an article focused student characteristics and behaviors in adolescence

predicted later educational and occupational success above and beyond parental

socioeconomic status, IQ and broad personality traits. Then, this an article to test

the role of student characteristic and behaviors over and above broad personality

traits. In addition, this an article to highlight the potential importance of what

students, do in school and how they react to them to their experience during that

time. Lastly, this an article were to identified the possibility that things that happen

in specific periods of one’s life may play out in ways far more significant that we

expect.

3. The methodology.

The authors using survey and measurement methodology used. Firstly, the survey

methodology was used data from the student (12 to 20 years old and 50-year follow-

up. Secondly, the authors were used method measurement in (student attitudes &

behaviors, personality traits, cognitive abilities, demographics, educational

attainment, annual income and occupational).

The alternative methodology, the authors were used to focused groups. This method

can generate narrative data in a focused discussion. Example, characterizing student

social level and sharing and comparing student’s family background.

4. Result of the study.

Firstly, the authors examined the correlations of the scales with the two higher order

personality factors to evaluate the relations of the student characteristics with the

broad personality factors. Secondly, the authors tested whether student’s

characteristics and behaviors were related to career outcomes across 11 and 50

years. Then, the incremental validity of each student scale over and above IQ and

broad personality scales by computing regression analyses. Lastly, educational

attainment mediated the effects of student characteristics, broad personality traits,

IQ and occupational prestige and income in the 11- and 50-year follow up.

5. Own thought.

Firstly, I think this research can help all educators in Malaysia identify the potential

of students in learning and co-curricular activities at primary or secondary school.

It is can be suit in Malaysia education curriculum and the best to organize education

system. Additionally, the methodology used has been appropriate in obtaining

accurate and effective information to achieve the objectives of this study. Finally, I

think this study has a positive impact on the students' families to sharpen the talents

of children from home.
