Introduction&

In!the!Spring!of!2012,!legendary!mixer!Chris!Lord<
Alge!(Nickelback,!Green!Day,!Aerosmith.!Daughtry)!
revisited!his!roots!as!a!recording!engineer!and!went!
with!me!to!Ocean!Studios!in!Burbank!to!record!his!
own!signature!Drum!Sample!pack.!!As!you!can!
imagine,!this!was!quite!an!exciting!experience!given!
the!amount!of!respect!and!admiration!I!have!for!
Chris’s!skills.!!

If!you!scan!the!audio!Internet!forums,!people!are!

The!CLA!preset!kits!were!designed!to!give!you!that!
ultimate!“CLA”!signature!sound.!!Like!in!CLA’s!mixing,!
there!are!a!lot!of!blends!of!various!kick!and!snare!
samples!that!help!create!the!fat!and!punchy!sound!
that!he!achieves.!!For!instance,!with!kicks,!the!dry!
“DW!22”!is!often!used!as!a!“base”!sample!that!gets!
mixed!in!with!one!of!the!other!kick!sets.!!There!are!
also!subtle!amounts!of!reverb!“FX”!from!his!famous!
SONY™!reverb!unit.!

There!are!also!“OT”!samples,!which!are!special!effect!
samples!with!extreme!compression!that!can!be!mixed!

The!CLA!Snare!drum!samples!differ!from!the!Steven!
Slate!Deluxe!and!Classic!Snares!in!that!the!“Rimshot”!
note!is!different!than!the!“Center!Hit”!note!(Head).!!
Comparatively,!SSD4!Snares!have!Rimshot!samples!on!
the!top!velocity!layers!of!the!Center!Hit,!where!CLA!do!
not!!

A!Rimshot!is!a!very!aggressive!hit!where!the!
drummer!uses!the!flat!of!his!stick!to!hit!the!rim!of!the!
snare!AND!the!center!at!the!same!time.!!The!“Center!
Hit”!is!just!a!hit!in!the!center!of!the!drum!without!the!
rim.!!It!is!important!when!using!midi!files!to!
understand!what!snare!notes!are!triggering.!!In!
practice,!more!aggressive!and!punchy!Rock!songs!will!
use!the!Rimshot!as!the!hardest!main!hits!of!the!song,!
and!more!Pop/Rock,!and!Country!will!use!the!Center!
Hit!for!the!main!parts!of!the!song.!
