(iii) Use only front side of page for write up as well as for sketches and detailing.
(iv) Mark 1½” margins on both left and right. Use left margin to show bullets and right margin to show
references like clause of code/page etc.
(v) Start new design problem on new page.
(vi) Heading and sub heading shall be distinct than write up.
(vii) Support the calculation/s with neat sketches wherever required.
(viii) Prepare A2 size sheet to furnish design detailing of G+3 building
(ix) Attach A3 size sheets to furnish design detailing of remaining topics.
(x) All design detailing shall be strictly as per relevant IS standards.
(xi) Spiral bound is preferred as it is more convenient for reading.
(xii) Student shall bring required IS codes and other references in class and tutorial/Lab.

Tutorial – 1: Building Layout and Design

1.1 Explain the flow of loads in a Building. Also define as what you mean by a framed building.
1.2 List down the guidelines for preparing the structural layout of the building taking into consideration
the economy and aesthetic features.
1.3 Write the steps with codal provisions for determination of lateral loads acting at nodal points of a
residential building due to wind.
1.4 A building of size 20 m x 15 m has 20 columns of size 450 mm x 450 mm, spaced at 5 m c/c. Assume
230 mm thick brick masonry wall on periphery only and no internal walls. The building has 3
stories of 4 m each. The plinth level of RCC slab and beam is at 1.0 meter above G.L and footing is
provided at 2 meter below G.L. Consider beam size 230 mm x 600 mm in both direction and slab
thickness 150 mm. The building is located in Vadodara. Calculate wind forces on the external frame
as well any one of the internal frame using IS 875.
1.5 For the building lay out shown in Fig.1 with following details, Draw the load distribution diagram
and estimate the loads for the following:
Typical floor beams: (B13 & B14), (B4,B5 & B6), (B17 & B18)
Terrace level beams: ( B9, B10, B 11) ( (B21, B22)
Number of storey: G+3
Floor to floor height: 3.15 m
External walls: 250 mm including plaster
Internal walls: 150 mm including plaster
Imposed load: Roof = 1.5 kN/mm2, Floor = 4.0 kN/mm2
Floor finish: Roof = 1.5 kN/mm2, Floor = 1.0 kN/mm2
1.6 Do the following:
(a) Prepare the structural layout of the typical floor plan of G+3, buildings shown in below in
PlanI,II & III. You are free to decide the position of the stair case. Prepare Structural Layout for
Column layout, Ground Floor Plan, Typical Floor Plan.
(b) Analyse, Design and Detail G+3 building for the allocated plan (inclusive of Ductile detailing)

Tutorial – 2: Design of Retaining Wall

2.1 Define Retaining wall. Explain the purpose of the retaining wall.
2.2 Discuss briefly various types of retaining walls and situations where a particular type is used.
2.3 When is the counterfort retaining wall preferred as a structure? Also explain the structural
behaviour of counterforts in a counterfort retaining wall.
2.4 State consideration for different ground water conditions in lateral earth pressure.
2.5 What precautionary measures will you take to ensure that the retaining wall doesn’t fail?

Tutorial – 3: Design of Water Tank

3.1 Explain how the ratio of Length: breadth affects the design of the underground reservoirs.

3.2 Enlist the minimum reinforcement criteria for the structures retaining liquid in context to IS 3370.

3.3 Explain the various joints used in water tnak

3.4 Design an underground circular tank for the following data: Diameter of the tank is 6.0 m; Depth of

water is 3.0 m. The wall and base slab are not monolithic with each other. Use M30 grade of

concrete and Fe 250 for design of the tank.

3.5 Design an underground reservoir for the following dimensions and the soil parameters as

mentioned below: Consider 0.3m of free board. The outside soil which is 0.3m below the top of the

tank wall to be taken as fully saturated up to its full height.

3.6 Fix the Basic dimensions of Intze type container of an elevated water tank to store 5.5 lacs liter
water and design and detail top dome, top ring beam and cylindrical wall. Height of staging = 15 m
up to bottom of tank. Use M30 grade concrete and Fe 415 Steel.

Tutorial – 4: Design of Flat Slab

4.1 Explain direct design method for design of flat slab. State limitations of direct design method.
4.2 Enlist the advantages & disadvantages of Flat Slab Method.
4.3 Design an interior panel of a flat slab of a flat slab of size 5 m x 5 m without providing drop and
column head. Size of column is 500 mm x 500 mm and live load on the panel is 3 kN/m2. Height of
column is 4 m above and below the slab. Take floor finish load as 1 kN/m2. Use M20 concrete and Fe
415 steel.
4.4 Design an interior panel of a flat slab with panel size 6 m x 6 m supported by columns of size 500
mm x 500 mm. provide suitable drop. Take live load as 3 kN/m2 and floor finish load as 1 kN/m2.
Use M20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.

Tutorial – 5: Earthquake Resistant Design of Building

5.1 State the guidelines for efficient earthquake resistant design of structures.

5.2 Make critical remarks on “Effect of irregularities on performance of RC building”.

5.3 Explain (a) Strong Column Weak Beam (b) Short column effect

5.4 Enlist the various load combinations to be considered for Superstructure as well as for
substructure in case of seismic loading.

5.5 Consider a 4-storeyed RCC building having a plan area of 20 m x 15 m. The plan in X-direction
comprises of 4 bays each of 5.0 m and in Z-direction has 3 bays each of 5.0 m. The building is
located in Ahmedabad. The soil condition is medium stiff and entire building is on raft foundation.
RC frames are infilled with brick masonry. The lumped weight due to dead loads is 12 kN/m2 on
floors and 10 kN/m2 on roof. The live load is 4 kN/m2 on floors and 1.5 kN/m2 on roof. Determine
the Design Seismic force and shear at each level. Ground storey height is 4.2 m and other three
storeys are each of 3.2 m.

5.6 Explain the following provisions for ductile detailing as per IS:13920

(i) Grade of concrete and type of steel


(ii) Diameter of stirrups.
(iii) Ductile detailing of beam
(iv) Ductile detailing of column
(v) Confining reinforcement with sketches
(vi) Special confining reinforcement
(vii) Ductile detailing of longitudinal reinforcement in beam
(viii) Requirements of Shear wall
(ix) Concept of flanged shear wall

5.7 Carry out lateral load distribution for a floor with shear walls as shown in Figure below. A
earthquake lateral force of value “P” kN acts in Y-direction.

5.8 Draw and neatly detail reinforcement detailing (ductile) of two span reinforced concrete
continuous beam of dimension 230 mm x 450 mm as per IS 13920-1993.
