Duration of Examination: 3 hours FULL MARKS: 50

Question 1 is compulsory and answer any 4 questions out of the remaining 5

[1]
a). The percentage leakage impedance of a single phase 2000 V/100 V, 5 kVA
transformer is 2.5. What voltage should be applied to HV side for carrying out short
circuit test at rated current?
b). What precautions are taken during starting of dc shunt and series motor and
why? [2*5]
c). A 7456 W, 4-pole, 50Hz, 3-phase induction motor is operating at 1450 rpm on
full load. The stator copper loss is 231W and the rotational loss is 343W. What is the
efficiency of the motor?
d). A 4 pole, 50 Hz star- connected alternator has 4 slots per pole per phase,
conductors per slot being 4. If the winding coil span is 1500, calculate the distribution
factor and pitch factor.
e). How a synchronous motor can be used as a synchronous condenser?

[2] a) Why starter is necessary to start an induction motor? Mention the various
methods of starting. Explain the details of star-delta starter with the help of neat
diagram. [6]
b) The open circuit voltage across the slip rings of a 100 hp induction motor is 273 V at
standstill. What resistance in rotor circuit will reduce its full-load speed by 25%. The
full-load slip is 2% with no additional rotor resistance. Assume rotor to be star-
connected. [4]
[3] a) What is the voltage regulation of single phase transformer when connected a
capacitive load? What are the advantages of three phase transformer over a single
phase and which type of connection is used for load end and why? [2+3]
b) A 400 KVA, distribution transformer has full load iron loss of 2.5 kW and copper
loss of 3.5 kW. During a day, its load cycle for 24 hours is,
6 hours 300 kW at 0.8 p.f.
10 hours 200 kW at 0.7 p.f.
4 hours 100 kW at 0.9 p.f.
4 hours under No-Load Condition.
Determining it’s all day efficiency. [5]
[4] a) Explain the stable operation of the dc-shunt motor during starting and loading.[4]
b) A dc series motor takes 20A at 100V and runs at 1000rpm. Armature and field
resistance are 0.05ohm and 0.2 ohm, respectively. At what speed will it run developing
same torque when a 10 ohm resistance is placed in parallel with armature? Assume the
flux proportional to field current. [3]
c) A 420V dc shunt motor has an armature and field resistance of 0.05 ohm and 250
ohm, respectively. The motor takes a current of 8A when running at no-load. Find the
approximately the maximum efficiency and the load current at which it occurs. [3]
[5] a) Explain the following i) EMF induced in the alternator ii) Pitch Factor iii)
Distribution Factor iv) Rotating Magnetic Field v) Three Phase Armature Winding ( with
a Specific Example) [5]
b) A 4500 kVA, 6600 V, three phase star connected alternator with ra= 0.45 ohm and
jXs= j6.5 ohm, delivers full load current at 0.866 pf lagging, and normal rated voltage.
Estimate the terminal voltage for the same excitation and load current at 0.866 pf
leading. [5]
[6] a) Explain clearly with the help of phasor diagrams and plots, the variation of the
armature current with the excitation current for a three Phase Synchronous Motor. [5]
b) A synchronous motor overexcited to take 600 kVA gives 360 hp at an efficiency of
0.9. It runs in parallel with a load of 1000 kVA At 0.866 pf lagging. Find resultant pf. [5]
